I don't know about you all but I am now concerned that a 3rd player has left the program.
1st it's our best player thinking he is NBA talent, and then if that's not enough he gets in trouble again so even if he wanted to withdraw his name from the draft and play next year he couldn't.
2nd it's our injured sophmore, who was a great freshman player.
3rd a transfer who already sat out the manadory year.
So now we are down at least 2 scholarships for this year. This also means we have a more inexperienced team than we thought we would have at the end of last year.
Where I thought we would be the favorite to win the conference this year back in April now I'm doubting that possibility. The challenge is, IMO, too big to repeat.
This will be another difficult year for the coach. 2 of these players who left were his recruits?
Will we be seeing a post about open tryouts?
Disappointing turn of events.

I think this loss is different from the others. He's not a player who ever was a problem in any way either here or at Providence. The other two losses were guys who have had many incidents.

We are down only one scholarship player because Bassett was gone early enough to be replaced and Sayles got to return to replace Coleman. Of course, we have two transfers sitting out, so that means we have 10 scholarship players, including four freshmen. In that way, it's going to be a lot like last year.

Due to the nature of the business in general, and especially the nature of the players these days, I figure 2 defections per year, at any time of year, for rational, irrational, or uknown reasons, is standard operating procedure.

As for this year, we'll it just got more interesting.  We sure are young.

It's been four, Marquis Horne left the program last year before the season got into the full swing. Yes open tryouts were sometime in the last week or two but I don't think we're struggling for bodies since we already have two walk ons and two other players sitting out this year due to transfer rules.

If you're including Horne, you have to include Kinney, too.

Months ago, I thought Jacobs and/or Hall would get a redshirt. That seems extremely doubtful now. Everyone will play.

I still don't understand why people act surprised that Bassett is gone. And D.J. was our best player.

I only left off Kinney because Horne, AB, Coleman, and Kellogg all left the program on their own. Kinney was kicked off the team mid season.

Steve....in all due respect for your opinion I believe that we would not have won the MAC tournament and the 1st NCAA game had it not been for Bassett. He was the only player we had who could create his our shot.

Agree somewhat, however DJ was our best player and he was setting up AB a lot of those times. Bassett got the glory, headlines, and fame. DJ got my respect.

Taking the whole season into account Cooper was our best player last year. Considering only the MAC tournament and the Big Dance, Armon was our best player and the main reason we had made it as far as we did.

All the whiner's keep on whining,  If I check the stat book,  Alex Kellogg had zero points, zero rebounds and zero games played,  Would Alex help this year?  sure on the defensive side of the ball, but all the whiner's are selling this team out,  before the season starts and it's right down pissing me off.  Armon put us on his shoulders and carried us through the MAC and NCAA Tournaments, but trust me folks, he was bad chemistry for the team, Stevie "Fresh"  he couldn't stay out of trouble and I wasn't really counting on him to be on the team this year anyway. Then Alex Kellogg, hope he gets his life in order, but he hasn't played one minute in an Ohio uniform, how can you miss something you don't have?  In order for a team to be successful you need what I call the "Big 3",   Ohio has that in DJ Cooper, Tommy Freeman and Devaughn Washington,  Ohio has really good role players that will compliment the "Big 3" in Reggie Keely, Ivo Baltic and Ethan Jacobs in the post,  Nick Kellogg and Rico Johnson relieving DJ and then TJ Hall at 6'6 and Asown Sayles will help also. I'm hearing good things about the walk-on's, so you see whiner's all isn't lost.  It takes a TEAM to WIN ballgame's not one player.  All the dead weight is gone and now Ohio has a Team.  So stop your whinning and get behind this Ohio Men's Basketball Team and root them to a MAC Championship, cuz that's exactly what I'm gonna do.

BobcatGman......My post was only directed as it relates to lost recruiting opportunities as these 3 players notified Ohio late and in this last announcement too late for our coaches to react.
I have confidence in the staff and the current crop of players but if 3 out of 12-13 scholarship players leave at times that does not give the coaches time to re-load those vacated positions then the team is hurting.
It's that simple!

GMan's point about The Big Three--solid veterans at three positions--is a good one.  And reason to remain calm.

Alex Kellogg isn't a big loss.  He was a reserve player.  Bassett and Coleman were projected starters at the 2 and 3 and had they stayed we would have been a legit to 40 team in the country and strong favorite in the MAC.  This does free up playing time for Jacobs at the 5 and Hall/Tungi will find time as the third string  power forward roll.  Devo can play the 5 with Baltic at the 4 if need be.  With Devo, Keely and Baltic we are still fine on the frontline. Next year with Smith we will be still ok and this gives Groce another scholarship to go get

If you want us to advance in the Dance, then yes we are hurting.  If you want us to win the MAC again, then no, we aren't hurting.  We can still win the MAC without Kellog.  Depending on who we would face in the NCAA tournament, we'd either do admirably or do crappy (no good team is going to not look closely at us after the Georgetown fiasco).  I have faith in this season that we will do quite well considering the return of those who have now had some experience with big games (MAC tourney and NCAA tourney games).  Not only that but we have a strong class below them so we'll be fine for the next few years.  Yes it sucks this kid has left because we could have made real noise on the national level.  However, on the MAC level, we will still make noise as we have many starters returning.  This will be a good year for us again, I can feel it.
