*Should've beat this team by 25+.  I was hoping we'd bounce back after a lackluster Oakland game and we did for the most part.  Nice to get some mojo back as we head out West.
*I'd like to see Tommy play a larger role on this team.  Ala last year, it's almost as though we are attempting to minimize him.  And like last year, I'm thinking we'll need to go back to him.  I just feel like his role is not as clear cut and impactful as it was towards the later parts of last season.  And if you recall, early last season I felt Tommy was in the same position he was this season.  May have been early foul trouble, but I like to see him with more than 20 minutes and more than 7 shots.
*Nick Kellog is establishing himself as the most polished of the new recruits, something I didn't expect.  He's awfully composed and solid for a freshman.  Very impressed today.
*On the flip side Ricardo appears to need much more time.  Like his upside, but he's not on the same page most of the time he's on the floor.
*Kuddos to Asown.  Seems like a real team player.  Hard working and appears to have bounced back with a great attitude after it appeared we had released him.  Still (and I really hope he doesn't read this board) I think he's a low risk/low reward type player.  He won't make a lot of mistakes, but other than dirty work (that I'd rather see Baltic & Keely do) and giving some breaks I'd rather see him play less.  I just feel he's a senior with little upside and if we're using the early season to get ready for conference play, well then lets see what some of the other guys have.  More specifically, I think I'd give TJ Hall the 18 minutes role and Asown the 11 minutes.   You've got two ways of looking at it:  (1) let the freshman work their way into it slowly; (2) this is the time to see what they've got so play them.  Granted TJ has been wildly inconsistent, but I think I'd give him this early season to see what he's got.  11 minutes and 3 shots is not enough of a sample size.  Bottom line, I think to have a special kind of year TJ or Ricardo have to develop.  Once again we know what Asown has to offer and it's a limited upside.  If we see the freshman don't  have it right now after these early games, then we can fall back onto Asown as we did last year when there weren't any other viable choices.
*Not sure what the strategy of not starting Washington is?  Maybe it's to show him he has to earn his starting job.  But we've had a couple slow starts while starting the phantom starting lineup.  Like to see the real starters start soon.
*DeVaughn appears to really be playing hard.  I saw his intensity on both side of the floor every minute he was in the game.  Very impressed and I think he'll have a great year.
*16 of 19 from the FT line.  Much improved.

As far as Tommy goes, he is going to get his minutes. I believe his lack of PT yesterday was more due to the two early fouls and giving some other (younger guys) some PT.

I believe that both Ricardo and Nick have made strides in these first couple games. Nick is def the more polished, more ready to play now, but I believe as the season progresses, Ricardo will see some good quality minutes and wouldn't be surprised if he put up some 15+ pts on some given nights.

That said, I believe that much like last year, there are going to be some growing pains with this team this year. I don't see us really reaching our potential until much later in the year. My expectations have been slightly lowered after these first three games. I just don't see us with the necessarily efficiency needed to have a "great" season. I hope I'm wrong. As the freshman continue to develop, I see this problem slowly going away.

Last year, I got nervous anytime someone in the frontcourt had the ball. I didn't trust any of our bigs with the ball. That lack of trust is going away. Baltic especially has improved significantly, and will continue to develop.

In summary, I just dont know that this is the "breakout year" some of us have been expecting...but these guys will make major strides by the end of the season. I still wouldn't be surprised to see us win the MAC tourny again, but its going to be a roller coaster ride.

I remember watching Ohio in the post-season last year and envisioning in the future DJ getting a defensive rebound (and he'll get more than his share as a 5-11 point guard) and leading a fast-break with an improved Baltic and Devo filling out the lanes. Fast forward to midway through the second half yesterday and DJ leading the fast-break after a rebound, drawing the attention of the lone defender by fainting a pass left to Devo only to skip a pass to Baltic on the right for the slam dunk. Baltic and Devo appear to be able to run all day and jump out of the building. Few teams will have bigs that can match that.

Now adding to that vision is DJ penetrating down the lane in the half-court offense, drawing an extra defender or two with either Freeman or Kellogg setting up in the corner for the 3. How many of those were there yesterday? It's easy to see how DJ is going to pile up the assists the next 3 seasons.

From the box score it looks like Cooper did not start. Does anyone know why?

On the ESPN iphone ap, it showed that he didn't start, but after checking the official box score I see he did.

I've noticed lots of Box Scores, particularly ESPN, being dead wrong on the starters over the years.
