College of Charleston got that guy because they cheated, in a way. Baru went to C of C as a package deal with his guardian's son who barely had two local Division 3 offers. Baru should be in the ACC or SEC and the A10 or CAA at worst. Here's a short post from Evan Daniels who isn't nearly as biased a reporter as our good friend Andy Katz:

I don't see how this is cheating. It doesn't sound too different from how we got Nick Kellogg actually.

It's under the table where everyone can see cheating that the NCAA needs to put a stop to. This is not at all how we got Nick Kellogg. Alex is and was a legitimate Division I basketball prospect who played a year at Providence before coming here. Did it help in landing his brother? Hell yeah it probably did but there were also legitimate reasons to recruit Alex himself (namely the fact that you can count on a hand missing three fingers how many bruisers we have on this team). This kid Baru is bringing with him to C of C is no better at basketball than most of the student managers we have on staff at Ohio. He barely had 2 Division III offers from schools that frankly aren't very good in the ODAC. Secondly, from what I've heard, he's not even that close to the older son who's going with him as he is with the younger son. So all this garbage that they're best friends and la de dah is ridiculous. This is along the lines of when Chalmers and his dad went to Kansas and numerous other occasions all around the country and it makes me sick. I know that's what it takes to land these elite kids but in my mind this is just a step down from the whole Cam Newton mess and something the NCAA needs to seriously evaluate.

We have taken several football players over the years this way.  In fact we have one set right now, it is above board, just a matter of how do you want to invest your scholarship dollars.

I don't think Hoops is implying that the package deal is the problem. He's implying that the recruitment of Baru by Cremins has other facets to it that are unethical, if not entirely illegal according to the NCAA rulebook (if that still exists).

Agree with JCW, that it boils down to how you want to use your scholly allotment and dollars when offered a package of Tom Brady and Peter Brady...but you can't just outright cheat to get Tom Brady.

Exactly, from what I've heard here in Richmond after going to a various high school basketball games is that the whole thing was handled very shady from the get go. The signing period happened a while ago and yet it just came out that Baru is going to C of C in the last two days or so officially. Don't you think if you were signing a top 50 kid and a top 10 kid at his position and it was the highest ranked recruit the school had ever signed there be a bit more press at the time of the signing? Whole thing reeks of bad blood.

And you'll never hear a negative word about this or situations like it from the national media.

Sounds like when a player's coach shows up on the staff - aren't they taking a look at that?  FYI - also sounds like a scene out of the Blind Side.

You mean like James Bridgewater coming to Ohio and then Brian Townsend getting a job?

beg to differ bobcat dragon, sometimes these deals are indeed in the news.  several years ago, scumbag coach tim floyd tried a similar stunt when he was coaching USC.  forgive me for not remembering the names of the players involved, but it went something like this:  H.S. all american agreed to come to u.s.c. but to get him, floyd had to give a scholly to the kid's buddy, the son of some rap music artist/producer i believe, who was an ordinary h.s. player with no major college offers.  i saw several stories in the national media about this.  I think the h.s. all american had a good 2 year career, left when floyd was fired, and is now in the nba.  his lil buddy stayed one more year, then left school.

Yes, you are right. Romeo Miller son of Master P. He was only recruited because he was good friends with current Toronto Raptor Demar DeRozan. MIller got released from the team last year due to an "undisclosed incident".

Floyd and Cremins are in the same scumbag coaches association. Truly amazing that Floyd is still allowed to coach at a Division I school.

How about the current coach at Kansas St.? Didn't Huggins bring him on his coaching staff so that a star player would join him? Like others on this thread, I forget the involved names, but vaguely recall the incident.

Edit: Beasley, perhaps?

Danny Manning's old man was hired as a Kansas assistant, if I recall, when he was in school. Years ago in Pittsburgh, a local AAU coach, business owner and string puller by the name of J.O Stright had a kid who was a decent HS ballplayer but certainly not a D-! prospect. He and Danny Fortson were teammates and buddies at Shaler HS and Duquesne gave his kid Justin a scholarship with the idea Fortson would follow. He didn't. Follow the link to a great article about this kind of stuff in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about Stright.
