In my opinion Taylor is the most important recruit to date in the Groce regime --- As I see it this program has to find a way to crack through to the next level when it comes to the recruits that we compete for -- How to do that is as risky as it is difficult.

Bassett was without doubt the most dynamic talent to come to Athens since Trent in that Bassett can explode for his points no matter what team the Bobcats played.   Of course he came with the baggage and risk associated with that baggage but your other alternative is to find a guy that slips through the cracks which is a lot riskier talent wise which is what high level recruiting sooner or later comes down to.

Bassett served his purpose wonderfully as we would not have any of the attention nationally that we have now without those magical 4 days in March that was parlayed into the Georgetown win.  Cooper is an assist man who can score but he needs at least one dynamic talent around him in order to truly appreciate how good he and the Bobcats can be.  I honestly don't feel Taylor is a Bobcat recruit without that post season run.

Based on Taylor's high school and AAU success coming into his senior season, he is the best positioned recruit to raise the profile of Groce's recruiting pool.  It's definitely a a huge stretch to have Taylor reach the level of a McDonald's All American but I have no doubt in my mind that Taylor is at least the equal of Trey Burke who played with Jared Sullinger et al at Columbus Northland and is currently ranked higher nationally than Taylor as a PG (simply because he's 6'1 as opposed to 5'9 in my opinion) With a loaded Northland lineup, Taylor's high school team beat them by 20 points if my memory serves in last year state playoffs. These two schools are about 10 minutes from each other in the Columbus area so it will be a great barometer again this year to guage one vs. the other.

IF (big IF) Taylor can explode and get some national attention as a senior then the fact that he is already  coming to Athens can move OU even further into the national consciousness.  It's the one thing that Coach Hunter just couldn't figure out how to do when we were blessed to have Trent on campus for 3 years...find that player who is even better or at least arguably so.

Don't know much about Stevie Taylor but I do know this...until we recruit a QUALITY big man OR a guy that develops into one, about all we can win is the 6'5" and under league.  Against the bigs (TENN) we need much more inside help.  So, I agree with those that say let's get a big man...someone like Devereaux, Trent, etc. with any remaining scholly.

If Stevie Taylor comes even close to where DJ Cooper is now, I'll be more then happy.

The key isn't landing the one huge recruit IMO. Its keeping a team together without losing multiple players every year.

Devereaux was part of one of the MAC's best frontlines over the past 3 decades. Eddie Hicks and Vic Alexander joining Devereuax up front, relegating Nate Cole to sixth man. Cole would possibly be our best post player today.

When Stevie Taylor committed several months ago I was hoping a big man - either one he played with during the summer AAU season, or one he played against but was familiar with him - would want to join him at Ohio, knowing how good he is and Taylor's ability to make those around him better.

Still hoping, I guess.

Looks like a guy that can create his own shot whenever he wants.  Not gonna be able to dribble around everyone in college but he looks like he is super quick and has a flare for the great pass.  Looking forward to seeing him in green next year!

Never forget that we need a 6'3" or 6'4" guard who causes mismatch problems and, most importantly, thrives on playing the pressure defense (mostly 3/4 court).

Two small guards at once is not ideal against top competition.

Ricardo Johnson and Walter Offutt seem to fit that mold.  Plus T.J. Hall at the 3 is 6'6'', and we are bringing in a 6'7'' SF next year.

That's what I'm trying to convey, If you land that dynamic backcourt player then you attract that big man that you covet.  This is chess, not checkers

If we wait until after the season is over to sign our last recruit and IF (big IF) Taylor has that explosive season then we may have that stud post player that takes us to that next level status ready to take up residence in Athens.

That's a perfect idea. Let's go after the guys that Kansas gets. Groce must have overlooked those guys.

I can't wait for the Stevie and DJ show.  Those two on the run will be some real entertainment.  He will fit in great with this offense.  I'm not worried one bit about his size.  The kid has an incredibly quick first step and great basketball smarts.  Seems like he is always leaving his opponent in the dust. I do worry about his low release point on his shot, but I'm sure that can be fixed.  The future of Bobcat Basketball is looking great!
More Stevie T  (Can we also get the guy doing flips at around 2:08 in the Convo? Need that enthusiasm)

Hopefully they can be the MAC's version of Kalin Lucas and Korie Lucious.

Still think that size, unfortunately, is an issue.  Strength, too.  To not get pushed/bodied around on o-fence and to be able to push/body on the defense.

I think back to recent games vs. Kansas and Tennessee.

Yah, that size was a big issue. Michigan State made it ONLY to the final four with two small guards.

I don't wish to single you out but I do wish to single out your thinking when I say that you seem to be missing that this is a process that involves a series of moves --- there isn't ONE single guard in high school this year in this country that is going to vault OU past Kansas or Tennessee.

There are however, a number of guards in this country that can propel OU towards being more competitive with those teams, and  there's an even smaller group of guards that are realistically obtainable for OU at this stage in the program's ascension.

Stevie Taylor is one of those guards and despite your misgivings we are better for having him than not having him.  That is not a statement for the present but a statement for the years to come.

Hopefully you can see that.

There is an even smaller universe of "big guys" (SIZE)  heading towards Ohio that can really make us competitive with the top programs.  So, what I'm hoping for is the identification of some "late bloomer" who can develop into the Hunter, Trent type player.  Who knows, that universe of players may be even smaller than the first one!

Dispatch's h.s. preview Thursday stated that Taylor was second-team all-district. Who was first team? Trey Burke? Someone else? Must of been a heck of a point guard.

Good one.

Willson Hall.  I'm not deriding us for bringing on a good ball player.  Surprisingly, I understand that it's probably easier for Duke and Kansas and UCLA do attract the best players than it is for us.  I'm just commenting on what I see as a factor (lack of size/strength at guard) that could work against against us as we play the top of the MAC and the good non-MAC teams.

Get over it, Wilson.  Do not, however, get over the sickness that is some other school...one which sucks..actually won the MAC football title last night.

Great year for Central Ohio talent last year.

First  team:  Ralph Hill Jr./Westerville North (Dayton),  Traevon Jackson/Westerville South (Wisconsin commit), Jared Sullinger/Northland (OSU), Brian Sullivan/Upper Arlington (M#$%i commit) and J.D. Weatherspoon/Northland (OSU).

Second team: Rob Brandeburg/Gahanna (Va. Commonwealth), Trey Burke/Northland (Michigan commit), Kevin Gray/Reynoldsburg (Morehead State), Taylor Rieger/Olentangy Orange ( Notre Dame College- Ohio D2) and Stevie Taylor/Gahanna (Ohio commit)

The third team included: Matty Bingaya/Delaware (now a junior and being recruited D-1), Giovannie Cartwright/Briggs (don't know what he's doing) Michael Green/Dublin Coffman (Akron), Zach Joseph/Orange (Ohio Dominican - D2) and Craig Sealey/Brookhaven (Bowling Green)

Taylor scored 27 in a romp in Gahanna Lincoln's 1st game of the season. He made 3 from 3 point range. No word on any assists but no one else on the team scored as much as 15 (12 players scored though)
