Is it me or does our coach only like to recruit guards and small ones at that? If we were to rate his recruits where would they rate; Superior, Very Good, Good, Average, Below Average? I know some would say it's not fair at this point in the season. Well I think it's OK to evaluate talent all during the year. Other than Cooper is there any other player coach has recruited that you would rate average or above? Are there any other players from the TOS years you would rate above average? Freeman? he has been 1 dimensional since day 1. Washington? he seems to have regressed.
Did I miss anyone? Overall I give Groce's recruits an average for these past 2 years. This is only due to Cooper & Bassett bringing up the overall rating. Based on only his current group I give him a below average
It's fine to evaluate what you've got at any point, but you have to be fair about it. What are your standards for good? Does average mean average in terms of MAC talent or average by comparision to past players? This team has three seniors that Groce did not recruit and then after that it's all sophomores and freshmen. You have to consider that also.
Look at the best players in the league:
Jarrod Jones, Ball State, jr.: As a sophomore: 12.2 ppg, 7.4 rpg; 44% FG; as a freshman: 11.2 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 46% FG
Justin Green, Kent State, jr.: SO: 13.6 ppg, 6.9 rpg; FR: 2.2 ppg, 1.8 rpg.
Julian Mavunga, Miami, jr.: SO: 10.0 ppg, 6.3 rpg; FR: 3.4 ppg, 2.2 rpg.
Nikola Cvetinova, Akron, jr.: SO: 6.7 ppg, 4.2 rpg; FR: 4.5 ppg, 2.5 rpg.
Xavier Silas, NIU, sr.: SO: transfer, DNP: FR: 9.7 ppg, 3.3 rpg.
Brandon Bowdry, EMU, sr.: SO: 14.8 ppg, 7.2 rpg; FR: DNP.
Baltic's 9 ppg, 6 rpg is pretty similar to what these guys did as sophomores. None of them were much better as freshman than Kellogg at 7.5 ppg. Hall is at better than 6 ppg and 3 rpg. Which freshmen and sophomores are having more impact than these guys? Not many. Then of course there is Cooper, who is probably the best player in the league as a sophomore!
Where will these guys be when they are juniors and seniors? I think they'll progress into All-MAC players. I think Groce is recruiting well. As for the size aspect, that seems to be an issue to some extent, but sometimes that's just how things work out. You've got to get the best players you can. I think they are better recruits than O'Shea's and I think they are among the best in the MAC.
