I've seen us play twice, so my basis isn't the best - and maybe this has already been covered.  I know that rebounding has been a big topic of discussion - but how about the ball screen compared to last year?  We set of ton of them but we don't have a key option this year:  Dr. Mid-Range

Picture this:
  • KVK sets the ball screen for Cooper
  • KVK's defender HAS TO  help because of Cooper's ability to drive
  • KVK spaces away from Cooper's drive so that his defender has a farther way to recover if Cooper passes it back.
  • Dr. Mid-Range knocks down the jumper.  Now, what's the defense do?
  • How confident are we in Keely, DeVo and Ivo to knock that down?  I'm okay with Ivo but not sure about Keely and Devo (again, have only seen two games this year)
  • The second time through the league I vision the defenses doubling Cooper on the ball screen, which means Cooper probably has to pass, that means our posts will have the ball at the 18 foot range.
  • You may say, can't we just roll the bigs down the lane after the screen - no - good defenses will all plug the lane on  Cooper's drive.  Wouldn't you if you were defending us?
  • Does Ford still work with the Bigs?  He helped develop KVK into a fantastic Mid-Range guy - hopefully we can get Keely and Ivo to develop that too.
Solutions?
  • Have a guard set the ball screen.  What would a defense do if Freeman set the screen for Cooper.  They couldn't  double him.  If they did, Cooper to Freeman for an open three.
I like the ball screen because it attacks the defense, and if Cooper can get into the lane we open up shooters in the corners who's defender has collapsed to help on the drive.  But, the ability to hit that open jumper is crucial.

Just based on the subject of this thread, I smiled thinking about the screens Jeff Boals would set.  It has nothing to do with what you wrote, but those pancake blocks (legal) he set at midcourt were awesome.

If you were to watch the recaps that Russ and Rob do you would see that Devo consistently makes the shot from the baseline and elbow to about 19 feet. Keely has a nice mid range jumper inside 15.  Someone help me here but I do not remember Ivo ever making a shot outside of 12 feet though he takes a good number. I do remember at least 2 airballs inside of 10 feet already this year.

Good point on KVK's ability to hit that shot off the coming off the drive to the inside out. One of the key components we miss from him this year is his passing from inside out and reposting, the other being the fundamental box out he gave you every possession.

I know a lot of teams use the screen up top but I really fail to see a great advantage in it.  The screen is simply too far away from the basket to not allow the defense to make all the necessary adjustments. In our case, the defenders double team the guy with the ball 35 (DJ) feet away from the basket to get the ball out of his hands (your best player is now out of the play).He passes the ball to someone (insert name here) 20 feet from the basket who at best is a 35-40% shooter from that distance.  That player must hit a 20 foot jumper or pass to someone open on the block.  IMHO, that just gives the defense way too much time to adjust.  I fail to see this as a good possession.

On the other hand, I personally think that screens lower and closer to the basket are much more effective.  I guess that is why I like the Indiana type motion where guys are settng good screens in the lane to open up guys for the 10-12 foot jumper or lay in...JMHO.  I'd rather have either of those outcomes than the 20 foot jumper.

I guess since I graduated in '71, I'm just old school...

Great  thoughtful post, 41.

I also wonder about the effectiveness of our screens.  That one Ivo sets up top (straight on from hoop, just outside 3 point line) never seems to work.  No one gets screened, no man gets free, no defensive confusion.  The screen needs to be set better and the man with the ball needs to drive his defender into the screen.


Of course, if we just dunked it more the crowd would get excited and that would solve everything.

In one word...disappointing!  I think this word will sum up this year unless there is a big turn around. 

Note to Coach-you keep running that high post screen for DJ so the opponenet can double him and make him give up the ball to Ivo or keeley or DW, you will lose a lot more games this year.  You WANT the ball in DJ's hands so why design something where he has to give it up?

And, did Buffalo not set some nice screens on and off the ball throughout their possessions in the second half.  When they didn't get a nice three they got shots in the lane.

Unfortunately, I was unable to see the first half (must have been a good one).  Should have never turned it on when I got home from the grandson's team winning on a last second shot (banker from the right side of the lane).
