I don't get the John Groce-Al Golden analogy.
John Groce is a young, high energy, charisma guy. He recruits very well relative to the MAC but hasn't delivered a MAC regular season championship (MAC tournament doesn't count, it just doesn't). Sound familiar?
In all fairness, in the last year we've lost Jay Kinney, Stevie Fresh, and Armon Bassett. They were all pure scorers and unfortunately that's exactly what this team is missing. So I'll give him a mulligan for this year.
I don't care about winning and losing. What I do care about is the effort on the court. For a few players on the team the effort is not there at all. In the last two games Devaughn has 58 minutes played and 2 rebounds. I don't care if both of his hands are broken, get more than two rebounds. Big Reg has 20 minutes and 1 rebound. Is that because Groce doesn't know how to get his players up for these games or is it on the shoulder's of the players themselves?
The sky has fallen on this season. I'm a Clevelander, I know all about hope and faith and next year. I'm a die-hard Bobcat fan, the same rules apply. I've come back early from breaks and left late just to squeeze in some extra home games during my time in school. Last night's loss was the death blow to the season for me. We lost to Bowling Green, a team that lost to Howard, the Howard that only has one other win this year (they just lost to Norfolk State last night at home). I understand that yes BG beat Miami but I don't care. Good luck catching Ball State for that regular season crown while the goons in the East beat up on each other.
I'm an apologist when it comes to Bobcat athletics but I just can't justify all the bad on the team this year. All the home losses, the Kansas Incident, the OOC let down, the Marshall game, and the complete lack of effort on the floor. My enthusiasm will be back in time for our first round MAC tourny road trip to kick off the gusto portion of the 2010-2011 season
P.S. - I really see a lot of potential in next year's squad. Ivo's got the energy of Tunji but also has an offensive presence (not a knock on Tunji, he almost single handedly resurrected the Kent State game). Kellog appears to be able to stroke like Tommy. If Walter's a pure scorer and Smith can rebound, I'm ready to celebrate my senior year with a MAC championship.
