To be honest, while this year has been a mixed bag so far, I'm glad we are allowing the younger guys to get playing time and experience they need in their development and it will be huge going forward. Just look at the depth chart regarding position:

Forwards

Dwight Wilson III - Exhausts Eligibility this year

Ben Roderick - 2024 Grad ( If COVID year is used)
G Wiz - 2025 Grad
AJ Clayton - 2025 Grad
IJ Ezuma - Redshirt 22-23, 2026 Grad
Aiden Hadaway - 2026 Grad

Ben Nicol ('23 COMMIT) - 2027 Grad

Guards

DeVon Baker - 2023 Grad

Miles Brown - 2024 Grad ( If COVID year is used)
Jaylin Hunter - 2024 Grad
Olumide Adelodun - 2025 Grad
AJ Brown - 2026 Grad
Ajay Sheldon - 2026 Grad
Elmore James IV - 2026 Grad
Quinn Corna - 2026 Grad
Ben Estis - Redshirt 22-23, 2027 Grad

Tons of young talent will rise in the rank in the next few years, and I believe Boals may have redshirted Ezuma and Estis to provide additional depth in later years. I'm sure if we have a few more successful seasons Boals will 100% be offered an extension. But, I will be interested to see how these young guys develop and if the transfer portal will hurt us later on.

In the world of the transfer portal are you ever building for the future or are you searching for lightning in a bottle?

I think you should still build for the future even with the portal but it is an excellent source for finding talented and at times undervalued players. While I expect we lose atleast 1-2 guys a year to the portal, we can easily use it to plug in other players that suit our system if needed.

I think you'll see that some non-P6 coaches (hopefully Boals is one of them) will be able to build out of the portal by keeping most of his good players and pushing (gently) most this non-productive players into the outgoing portal. A lot of this has to due with a coach's personality and the type of climate the coach builds within the program. NIL will make a difference, but I think some non-P6 programs will have great success with the portal where others, perhaps a majority, will be in a state of perpetual player churning, turnover and turmoil. That last I wish on that School in Oxford!

This is generally what Boals has done. We have lost a lot of players to the portal but Sears and BVP were thr first to that were not really replaceable. It is why we are struggling this season with respect to the prior two.

I'm not as optimistic in regards to keeping the guys we want to keep.

All it takes is one call from a "bigger" program and then Boals is now forced to resell his program and why they should stay. I'd think that's a pretty uncomfortable conversation.

AJ Brown looks like the only one who would be recruited to a bigger P5 type school. Hope he likes Athens and isn't actively looking for a salary, er, I mean more NIL $....

Searching for lightning in bottle is the more reasonable expectation

What makes Brown’s case interesting is he was recruited by bigger programs and still chose the mid major route. That is, unless he didn’t get the P5 offer he wanted. However, still seems like he could have carved out minutes at that level to eventually transfer to a different P5 program, so he who really knows with him.

A.J. seems to really love OU and coach Boals. I would only think he may look elsewhere depending on whether his brother goes big or goes Bobcats. He is an absolute stud and is getting a ton of big-time looks. I believe if Isaiah came to OU, the Brown Brothers, coupled with our other young guys, could do some MAC damage.

So do programs start holding a scholarship for Spring transfers every year now? Or just assume they'll have at least one available from a departure every Spring?

The latter, I think.
