So did they keep score the second half?

Not a confidence-inspiring performance. The missed threes were not on a bunch of bad looks, just a lot of bricks. The free throw shooting was really bad. If they shoot the ball like that at Belmont it will get ugly. There’s a lot more to say but I’m going to digest it overnight.

Doesn't look like our outside shooting will strike fear into the heart of Belmont.

2-20?????

Holy crap.
Baker/Hunter 1-13 from 3. Only 3 assists between them. Guessing they’re settling for a ton of bad shots rather than running the offense.

Not gonna win a lot of games that way.
That’s a bummer, I’m hoping Hunter will be more of a facilitator moving forward. FWIW, he dished out 8 assists in the UC scrimmage according to the box score I saw. Who knows what happened tonight.

I’m hoping it’s just an off night / first game jitters / rust that will shake off over time

I believe that AJ Clayton got a double-double. I know he was very close when he came back in for the last time. I didn't look back at the scoreboard one last time to see if he got that tenth rebound or not. Does anyone know?

Three point shots are usually assisted. Could part of low assist numbers be attributed to the poor outside shooting?

Looks like 9 rebounds. Both Browns didn’t play, so there’s some firepower and depth missing. The UC scrimmage was positive, the Capital exhibition could have been better. We’ll be fine.

That’s actually a good call-out. Very well could be. Tough to get assists if shots aren’t dropping.

Outside shooting is our biggest hurdle to competing for the conference title, as it has been in several other years. This exhibition only solidifies that.

Over the years here I've been the guy constantly saying "but can he shoot?" Personally I think it will be a big problem. Baker & Hunter were not good 3 point shooters in their previous lives. We all know Roderick's trajectory. When you're prone for 10% nights from 3 you're gonna have some really bad losses.

Save us, AJ Brown.

BTW, Boals mentioned in the postgame that one of Miles Brown, AJ Brown, and IJ will be back for Belmont, while the other two are a few weeks out. I imagine the one who will be ready will be one of the guards.

Some of my observations. I'm not a coach and I did not stay at Holiday Inn Express last night, so take it for what it's worth.

AJ Clayton: physically looked amazing, active on the boards, blocked and altered some shots
Dwight Wilson: welcome back, appeared to be moving well and still has solid touch around the rim
Devon Baker: didn't shoot it well (nobody did really), but also didn't force a lot or hunt his own shot a lot
Jaylin Hunter: should have had more assists (lots of missed shots), good ball handler, very active defensively, very athletic
BRick: was solid attacking the rim, took two big charges, but seemed timid to fire from 3 which I found discouraging
Hadaway/Shelton/James: looked like freshmen, like they needed to take a breath and relax, I wanted to see Shelton shoot the ball more, James finished well at the rim
Olumide: very active defender, didn't look for his shot much, I think he's one of the more intriguing guys on the roster
G-Wiz: project, not a big minutes guy this year, struggled posting up guys he had 5-6" on, hands looked bad, got lost on defense many times, he's a project in my eyes

Hopefully it’s AJ returning first. Interestingly enough, DeVon managed to score 21 against UC without attempting a 3 pointer. Not sure if that’s good or bad.

Agree with a lot of this. I thought #10 Hadaway look really promising. Athletic and looked to have good instincts getting to the rim and being in good spots. He made a really impressive move to the rim and missed the dunk but an eye opener for me.

Was really hoping he’d posterize that guy but he unfortunately missed it. He seemed to warm up over the course of the game and made some great defensive plays as well!

I'm actually not discouraged by this description. I'm guessing the staff has been working with him and hopes getting to the rim and easier shots will get his confidence back. Better he be attacking the basket and getting something going rather than shooting 1/10 from 3 night in and night out.

Agreed. Also a bit odd that someone assigning him that sobriquet wanted the guy to shoot MORE threes.

Nowhere did I say "I want Roderick to shoot more (or all) threes." I find it discouraging that a guy who, before last year, had a history as a pretty good shooter, misses two badly then looks afraid to pull the trigger after. It's discouraging to me to see him seem to lack confidence in his ability to shoot...against Capital. I find it discouraging that, after what we saw last season, it doesn't seem much has changed for him. Tiny sample size, clearly, but he was the one guy I was really hoping we'd see be able to stick some jumpers and stretch the floor. He can still contribute but this team desperately needs some outside shooting and it still blows my mind how he fell off the proverbial cliff last year.

And when your shooting percentage drops by 17%, you earn the BRick moniker.

With all the new piece parts, I see last night's game as Boals trying to figure out who plays best together and who doesn't. Lots of things take chemistry among the players and that'll take time. We were spoiled having Preston and Sears being so great at dishing dimes, scoring and even rebounding. The team can do only so much in practice; it takes game experience to really get things to gel. With our schedule, it's likely to be tough getting a win before Thanksgiving, and we might not have more than five going into MAC play. The main thing is to get things together by January so we can make a run in the MAC.

This seems like an aggressive take off of a small sample size. We aren’t the only school in the country; let alone our own schedule, with significant roster turnover due to the transfer portal, etc..

What would have been Belmont’s 2nd leading scorer that remained from last season (Will Richards) is now at Florida.

I count only six players returning from our entire roster last year. The missing account for more than 60 points, 20 rebounds and 130 minutes a game. That includes our only three players who averaged in double figures. That's a helluva lot to replace, and it likely won't happen overnight. I'll be happy if we look good out of the box against Belmont but I'm not going to panic if we don't.

We lost 11 guys that played in a game last year. Four of them were walk-ons but three guys, Sears, Vander Plas, and Carter, were the main reason for the success last year. I guess that it is possible that Josh McDaniel is still with the team as a manager as he started last year. But seven scholarship players are gone and six remain. It is hard to say exactly how this team will do.

The 11:
Michael Brown, Jr.
Jason Carter
Luke Frazier
Colin Granger
Josh McDaniel
Lunden McDay
Tommy Schmock
Mark Sears
Sam Towns
John Tenerowicz
Ben Vander Plas

The only meaningful takeaways from any exhibition should be who is injured.

Can confirm McDaniel is a student manager on staff this year. Awesome guy to talk to!
