I would've taken Coles, given he was dealt a tough hand of injuries, and his team overperformed, I think.

Not surprised by Greene, and if the first team matches POY voting (take Silas of the three one-votes), I'll be satisfied.

That's reasonable, but I too would have taken Coles. Miami wasn't supposed to be that good, and especially not after losing one of their best players. I'd probably have taken Hawkins ahead of Geno actually. Kent State was supposed to be good, and to his credit, they were.

Greene probably would have been my pick for Player of the Year. Nobody's numbers really compare in whole to D.J.'s, but Greene did everything he needed for Kent State to win. As indicated by the voting, there definitely was not a single standout player this year, and the good thing for MAC fans is how many of those players will be back next year.

If they voted on conference only stats then Greene doesn't win it.   His numbers in conference are good but not great.  Mavunga essentially leads him in every single category. Greene's .426 FG% is pretty bad considering he takes almost no shots outside of about 10 feet.  Mavunga also destroyed Greene in their only head-to-head matchup.  Check out the teams that Greene feasted on in preseason to post his "big" numbers and then compare them to who Mavunga had to face. Not even close.

D.J. also deserved the award ahead of Greene in my book.

It is pretty typical for the best player on the best team to get the nod.  I also agree that Coles worked more magic than Ford did as I believe he did more with less (as he usually does).

If DJ Cooper keeps his numbers on the level he put up this year, he should walk away with some brass when all is said and done.

I believe four of the players Geno brought in this year for Kent served in season suspensions for arrests or disorderly conduct. If he's trying to go the Huggins route, anything less than a top 25 appearance is not COY worthy.

This conference's award system is as pitiful as its RPI. DJ Cooper is the most complete player in the league, period. Last year's snub was acceptable, he was just a freshman; didn't pass the look test. But his number's this year are pretty much a mirror of last year and I expect them to remain about the same next year with a little higher APG and lower RPG. So if he wins next year, how does the committee rationalize this year's snub in hindsight?

The MAC is WACK.

if you put all the players in the MAC into a draft there isn't a coach in this league that wouldn't put Coop at the top of his draft board. thats the POY.

I hope this pisses him off the way it pissed off him and AB last year. We play much better when we're angry and feel disrespected.

Kent State fan here - usually just read your comments, but couldn't let this stuff go without a reply.  Only 1 player this season was suspended and it was a farce.  He was falsely accused right before Christmas and after New Years and the holidays, passed a polygraph and was reinstated.  As far as Geno deserving the COY, KSU returned only 2 of their starters and top 7 players from last year.  The only person who could have possibly won other than Geno was Charlie Coles and last I checked coaches with .500 records don't win that award regardless of injuries.

I guess it's that whole thing that just like "MVP" doesn't mean "best player," neither does "Player of the Year." And I don't think it always goes to the best player on the best team. Last year, it went to David Kool. Western Michigan was above average, but certainly not the best team.

As for coach, I think Geno has done a good job. But when you recruit as many JUCOs and transfers as he does, that's part of the game. Those guys aren't going to be there long, and the guys who replace them have to fill in right away. The guys Kent State brought in were supposed to make them good again, and they did. He did a good job, but I don't think he exceeded expectations the way Coles or Hawkins did. WMU was picked fourth in a bad division, so basically 10th overall. They ended up 2nd overall. That's pretty good.

Do you really think Kent State would have fared any better if they had played Miami's preseason schedule?  I don't have a problem with Geno winning the award but let's not pretend that the Flashes played Murderers Row in November and December. Miami did.   Miami played 11 teams with an RPI in the top 100 and beat 2.  Kent played 7 and won 1.  Kent played 57% of their games (17 games) against teams with an RPI over 150.  Miami played 35% (11 games).

Or "Senior of the Year" award, since the media seems determined that being a senior should be one of the criteria.

Eric GainesRobert Johnson, and Darius Leonard. All three were cited with disorderly conduct and suspended for two games, a scrimmage, and an exhibition.

As for Carlton Guyton, the fourth Kent State basketball player to be suspended from games this season, he was exonerated unlike the three stooges above. But still, how many of Charlies player's got into a rape/car theft conspiracy? Should a coach be penalized for having a terrible arrest to win ratio when it comes to COY voting? I say yes.

Kent State fans, don't be offended by me taking shots at Geno. He's a piggy back coach, a poor man's Bob Huggins or John Calipari . He rides the talent. That's not to say our own coach at Ohio isn't lacking in the coaching skills department, but then again he wasn't in the running for COY, so we never had to have that discussion.

I have no problem with Geno winning the award.  You can make a good case he deserves it.

There are several players of equal value to their teams; Greene isn't head and shoulders the best player in the league, but you can make a case that he's just as deserving as a few other players.

DJ Cooper is the best OVERALL PLAYER in the MAC !   His stats say it all and i'll argue about this til the cows come home. He got robbed of the POY Award. The award these days DOES NOT go to the best player, it goes to the best player on the best team and thats a big joke. It would not surprise me if those idiot voters keep him off the MAC 1st Team.

Why does every one hate Geno Ford? I don't know the guy, but he did a good job coaching. COY? I don't know. But he was one of the the top 3 for sure.

I don't hate Geno.  I think he did an excellent job this year but I do question his philosophy with the JUCOs.  I just think Coles deserved the award more.  The Redhawks, not a very deep team to begin with, lost their best player to injury and they still managed to be more than competitive.

I don't hate Geno and have no problem with him winning coach of the year.

The one I have a problem with is Greene winning POTY over DJ, but the people who vote on these awards are idiots for the most part. I've come to accept that over the years.

Congrats to Geno on well deserved COY award!  How can you question this pick???  He returns only 2 of his top 7 players, and goes on to win the regular season championship.....enough said guys.  Give him the award and shake his hand!     Way to go Geno!
