Geno's headed to Bradley.

Good hire at NIU, will be interesting to see who Kent goes with.

Not sure this helps Ohio in the medium term.

Congratulations to Geno!  Doubling his salary.  Another illustration of why the MAC is falling behind other mid major conferences.

Maybe Jim Christian would be interested in returning to Kent?

That would almost be a Grunkemeyer move.

As a long time bradley fan I hate to see this. The good part is Indiana State and Evansville gets an easier trip to  Peoria than they had previously encountered.  My buddy that roomed with Hersey Hawkins when he pitched for Bradley will not be very happy as an alum who is also a hoops addict.

The valley can have him. For now the inmates are in charge of the asylum. Good luck G you got a great school and brand new practice facility a downtown arena wwith a pretty supportive fanbase. Dont mess it up

Sadly this would be my prediction...Which would suck for us, since it is nice to have Boals waiting in the wings should Groce move on.

Perhaps Kent hires internally...Who was Geno's right hand man?

geeze-louise, how sad is it that a 2 time COY of the MAC would even consider bolting for a "power house" like Bradley.

The Valley is still one of the best leagues outside the Big 6. Great Tourney, Great tradition and great fans. Anyone see the full house at Wichita for the NIT? Lot of rich farmers to hit up for funds. FGreat Commish too....Ohio Sports ad guy if I remember that correctly.

Therein lies the problem.  His salary goes from roughly $300K to $700K.  We (meaning the MAC) can't pay our coaches enough.  It's not the only reason, certainly, but consider this...

He left Akron Canton airport to visit Bradley and said he did not have a contract when he boarded shortly before 7pm.  By 10pm, his face and bio was on the Bradley website.  What could he have seen that would have made him make that decision that quickly?

Scroll down to the gift list, maybe if the MAC can give our student-athletes who accomplish things like every other conference that would be a start. I mean not even a MAC hoodie which could easily be put into the budget somewhere.

Rob Senderhoff, who was arguably more important than Geno in the first place.

Borna is right on Doug Elgin, he's a Bobcat.

This is such a telling, sad sign for the MAC.  Our top program gets doubled up by Bradley?  No offense to that school, but we as a conference don't stand a chance if the likes of Bradley can just swoop in and take anyone they want.

The problem for the MAC salary wise is that we play Division 1 football, thus the pool for basketball funds is much lower than other comparable mid-majors that either don't have a football team or have a less expensive non-Division 1 team.  Makes it really hard to compete against schools where all the major dollars go to their basketball programs.

Blaming football is too easy.  The MAC schools just need to spend a bit more, that's all.  Like $1-$3 million more on athletics.  They'll still be bottom dwellers spending wise.  But, it is very doable.

Blaming football is easy because football is to blame.  Many MAC schools are already close to being financially tapped out.  Hell, EMU can't even afford to buy out a clear failure of a hoops coach in Charles Ramsey for next year.  Even if we can justify spending millions more on athletics, for the rest of the MAC the money and fan support simply aren't there to justify spending significantly more on athletics programs.

I generally dislike it when military analogies are used in sports, but the MAC is trying to fight a two front war with a third world military budget.  As a result, we have little chance of success on either front.

Help me out here................Why would someone go from one mid-major to another? The natural progression would be to one of the major conference programs. TN just hired a mid-major guy, so these spots are available and the pay is even greater.
What was Geno thinking?

This comes from a Kent State reporter and addresses the MAC athletics funding...

Ohio University charges its full-time students taking between 11 and 20 credit hours $531 in general fees each quarter. Of the $531, about 48 percent or $253.02 goes to the university's athletic department.

Other MAC universities that depend on its academic students to help fund the school's multimillion-dollar athletic program include: Miami (OH) where full-time students pay $453.65 each semester to the athletic department; University of Akron, $384.60 per semester; Bowling Green State University, $286.39 per semester; and Kent State University, $271.13 per semester.

In fact, MAC athletic departments are gaining the majority of its yearly budget from student fees.

Ohio University's 2011 athletic department budget shows $14.8 million dollars (81%) of the $18.2 million dollar total budget, comes from student fees.

It is just interesting to see how the departments are funded and where the money goes.  It would seem that to spend more on athletics, you would need to raise student fees.

Not all mid-majors are equal, and this is a great move for Geno and I have no doubt that he will do fine!

One thing that jumps out at me is that miami gets the most fees per student and pays very low salaries (BB and FB)and plays the toughest schedules in FB and BB where they are getting big payouts.  And they have hockey which probably makes money. Maybe because they have fewer number of students?  Anyway, something is going to have to give here folks for this to keep up.

So if our fee is the same as Miami's we have an extra $3 million or so ($200 x about 15,000 students). Add $3 million to our coaching salary budget and we retain coaches like Geno. Retain coaches like Geno and our quality of play increases. Increase the quality of our play and our postseason opportunities increase. Increase our postseason opportunities and our fanbase grows. Grow our fanbase and our revenue increases.

Blaming football leaves at least one thing out of consideration: If OU were to drop football, a certain faction of alumni contributions would cease. What's that worth?

My guess would be that Geno thinks that the Bradley job sets him up better for an eventual jump to a major job, and I don't disagree with him.

He's going to a school who can compete at the top of the conference (as opposed to a Providence-type job in the Big East) in a conference that doesn't have football sucking up athletic funds. The most obvious result that has is on his salary, which has been discussed here. But even beyond that, he should have a better budget to scout recruits, buy games, sign assistants, and other stuff like that. Just based on the salary difference, I'm guessing his total budget will be much healthier than the one that he had at Kent State... It's easier to sustain longterm success that way.

In my opinion, it's a smart move for him.

The Valley doesn't seem to be able to keep its coaches either.

Tuition is a student fee which is the primary revenue source for the University.

Would anyone here feel better if the ICA allocated funds were drawn out of the tuition pool of funds (which is a much larger sum of money than the general student fee) than they do about it coming from the general fee?

And if you think the faculty and staff are up in arms about their perception of ICA not having made any cuts over the last several years, how do you think having a coach making $700k would settle with them, regardless of the spend on football or any other sport for that matter? (rhetorical of course)

Because I'd guess the budgets of those sports are a drop in the ocean compared to the amount of the Athletic Budget that MAC Schools spend on football.

(Not criticizing or defending that, just positing)

He was thinking about a 133 percent increase in salary, I'm guessing.  Stupid NOT to make that move.
