Keep in mind that VCU does not have a football program so basketball is the marquee sport. The alumni, students and residents here in Richmond were thrilled with the final four appearance and the positive publicity it brought to the University and community. Over the past decade, VCU has made incredible progress in not only their athletic facilities, but also the academic facilities and programs. The VCU Medical Center is a valuable care provider and the VCU Massey Cancer Center is a leading cancer research institute which also provides a rural outreach program in the southern and western part of the state.
Everybody is thrilled that Coach Smart is staying at VCU. He and his wife are expecting their first child and he might just stay for many years, just like Coach Mooney at Richmond.
VCU used to play their basketball games in the downtown coliseum and the move to the smaller arena on campus has been very positive. Part of the new investment is adding some corporate/luxary boxes which will no doubt eventually pay for itself. This will allow them to keep the arena intimate and also take advantage of many of the local corporations.
