Bio at UC: http://www.gobearcats.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/belton_kenny00.html

From Arkley:  hoops update. Cats have added Kenny Belton to the active roster.

Belton is a big one, probably 6-81/2 and a tic under 300 lbs. Belton signed with UC, and graduated

Belton has not played for more than two years (neck injury). He got his degree from UC. Joins Cats as a non-scholly player atm

Belton potentially (medical hardship) could get extra year. If not, he's still able to play this season. More when I get to NJ

....he's still not listed in the online directory.  I've heard he's got a ways to go to be in "Groce Shape."

Must have passed a physical....had serious spinal injury that kept him out of b-ball for two years.....reportedly good team player....hard worker and excellent student:

ESPN rated him a 92 out of high school...We've never had higher than a 90 that I can remember since ESPN started these rankings.  But he was also 50 pounds lighter.

The talent is there somewhere.  I'm sure he can play a valuable role...But I doubt it will be early on.  Hopefully he can get in playing shape by conference play and be a solid contributor.

Of course that was 50 pounds and a serious spinal cord injury ago, but I'm cautiously optimistic that our coaching staff can get him back to game shape.

If he gets the medical waiver he will have two years to compete, could be a good deal for us.

Edit*

Also Ricardo Johnson was a 90 on ESPN.

Sonny Troutman was in the 80s until he signed with us and then he dropped like a rock.

Edit: Doh, misread what you were saying. I thought you were speaking in terms of Top 100.

More notes on Kenny Belton:
  • Was ranked #7 in the state of North Carolina as a HS senior at Greensboro Dudley.
  • Rivals 3 star
  • Hoop Scoop ranked him #131 nationally as a HS junior.  (Anything in the Top 300 is generally considered excellent.)
  • Hoop Scoop ranked him #177 nationally as a HS senior.
  • One recruiting observer, after seeing Kenny play as a 10th grader, said that "he has the physique of a body builder..."
  • Hoop Scoop said he first committed to Maryland, then switched to Cincinnati.
I wish the young man the best at Ohio in his health, academics, and  basketball career.  I guess he has a lot of work to do over the next two months.

Arkley tweeted that Belton could probably get a medical hardship extra year...would be great if he can contribute for 2 years.  Sounds like he only played 2 years for UC.

I like this. Given the turnover and all. Finishing your degree while battling a spinal injury is a sign of something good.

Waiting for the official bigmanz post from Monroe ...

If he is healthy and can get in game shape by January he will atleast gives us some depth in the post with Keely and Jacobs. We were thin on the frontline so this is a big boost even if its just a body that can bang. At the very least we got an extra post player to throw at McCrae, Marshall, Mavunga and Green in MAC play.

Exactly the template for which I am praying. Also, a six-foot basket tether.

Ed Sears level talent could probably dominate the MAC right now.  I'd take anything close to Ed Sears at this point.

Same here. Not sure how Sears could keep with Groce's tempo, but he'd definitely make that team better.

Ed Sears would dominate the MAC. The MAC is weaker in regards to talent compared to the years "The Sears Tower" played. I believe he was selected 2nd team All-Conference by the coaches and media (which means he was regarded as a top ten player in the league).

Groce does have a up tempo style of play. Most coaches typically change the offense to adapt to their personnel.
