I love this quote from the last paragraph:

"I've been honest and shared my health concerns with you and now we'll move forward to the business at hand -- coaching a great group of Lady Vols," she said. "For the time being, I hope you will respect my privacy regarding this matter."

Now, if the media can just honor her request, in fact, if they could follow this practice daily we'd have a much more civil world.

Dementia and Alzheimer's is a terrible disease that also impacts the family and friends.  I volunteer for the Alzheimer's Association and know the the physical implications of this disease effects the entire body and not just the mind and memory.  Thoughts and prayers to Coach Summitt, her family and friends.

Agreed 86.  Even though I didn't live in Akron at the time, I "watched" my grandfather suffer from Alzheimer's.  It did take a toll on my dad and his brother.

On a related note, it was great to see in the papers this week that there may have been a major break-through in understanding Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS).

I'm sorry to hear about it, too. I respect the courage shown by Coach Summitt and her family. I'm sure this will be a learning experience for her staff and team. She will make it so. Peace be upon your journey, Pat.

Like others here, I've seen how hard dementia can be on the patient and the people who love her or him. On one side of my family, five relatives had onset after retirement age. And, an OU friend was stricken and taken by frontal lobe dementia in his 40s. He was a quintessential OU student. Gone, but not forgotten.

The way that Coach Summitt and her family and UT staff have chosen to handle this situation is very helpful to other families experiencing the same difficulties.

I'm not sure how she will coach given the situation. I'm guessing  that her assistants know what she would do and fill in the gaps. It's kind of like what Paterno does now. I don't think he's really calling the shots anymore.

But they are just doing their job...  *rolleyes*  I hate the media.

1. Is there any indication they're not doing that?
2. I assume you don't consume any media, seeing how you hate it.

No you don't. You typed this on a media outlet. You learned about the story from a media outlet. Your avatar that you hand chose is a product of the media.

But your outrage so very everyman, isn't it?
