(I've been asked to post this as Ohio Athletics is making a strong push to reach out to as many Ohio Basketball alumni as possible.)

Men's Basketball to Hold Alumni Reunion

Event set for September 10

The Ohio men's basketball program wants you back in Athens! The basketball family is inviting any former players or managers back to campus on September 10, 2011.

The day will include a cookout/tailgate leading up to the Ohio Bobcats football home opener against Gardner-Webb kicking off at 7:00pm from Peden Stadium.

"We are extremely excited to invite our extended basketball family back to Athens to celebrate the rich history of our program," Head Coach John Groce said. "It will be an excellent way to get to know the people who have been integral parts to the foundation and growth of Ohio Basketball."

If you have not already received information in the mail regarding this event, please contact Graduate Assistant, Mark Morris, at 740-593-1232 or email him at markmorris42@gmail.com. Hotel discounts are available at a first-come, first-serve basis so hurry up and let us know if you will be in town to celebrate this great occasion!

I wonder why they aren't doing it during the basketball season?

Guys currently playing or coaching wouldn't be able to attend.

True, but that wouldn't affect most of these guys. It would be nice to have this around a basketball game, that would be something that some of our older fans (myself included) would like to see! Oh well...

Hasn't our basketball program tried to do just that during basketball season in recent years?  They had only limited success with it.  Maybe they are thinking that the timing of this event may draw more attendance.

That was my first reaction also.  I remember once -- maybe 15-20 years ago -- they had an alumni basketball game at the halftime of an Ohio regular season game.  Or, it may have been before the regular game began.  My memory is foggy on the details.  However, it was very nice to see some of the old guys out on the court.  As I recall Jerry Jackson and a few from his era even played.  I'd like to see something like that again.

Although I haven't seen any publicity on it, it could also be a promotional idea designed to help put butts in the seats for a less than compelling early season football game.

Really? Why is that? I am not sure how Fiami does it but they have an old timers game and banquet every year. Has fallen on the day we played them a couple of times. Kids are introuduced and eat on the concourse with the old men. I think the same thing was going on when we went to SOuth Carolina last year.
