41-30 at the half.

The Good:
-Ivo and Walter are scoring at will.
-We are shooting 60%
-We have forced 12 turnovers

The not so good:
-We are 7-13 on FTs.
-We have committed 8 turnovers. Too much against a team like Mercyhurst
-Mercyhurst has equaled us in total rebounds. I don't know how much Jacobs and Belton are expected to help, but this shouldn't happen.
-Mercyhurst is 6-12 on 3s. With our quickness and guard depth, we should be playing a lot of man to limit those looks.

3-3 from deep, 5-6 overall, and 2 steals

Taylor has 5 points, 4 assists, and 2 steals

Looks like Keely got the start over Smith but has 2 fouls.  Smith has played more minutes.  Goard getting a few minutes off the bench.

Sounds like Offutt is having a great game. Too bad we coudn't have a one camera video feed for this. I thought last year's exhibition games were shown via the live feed?

Mercyhurst cuts it to a two point game with 8 mins to go. Obviously I don't know the full story since I only have the gametracker to follow. But this is not encouraging.

And looks like Groce just pulled the entire 5 on the court during a 30-second timeout.

Good run leading to the under 4 timeout. We lead 70-61. Still no sign of Belton or Jacobs.

And we win 82-63. Not sure what we did differently those last 5 minutes, but we had about 8 steals and layups.

Looks like Offutt, Kellogg, and Baltic carried the load offensively.

"Observations" from the stats:

Keely in foul trouble and fouled out

Baltic with the double double

Welcome to Athens Mr. Offutt! (23pts and 4 steals)

Cooper 0-3 from deep

Kellogg 3-5 from deep (17pts)

Stevie with 9 and 4

Obvious that Offutt and Kellogg need to be getting lots of looks from guards that penetrate. May have a shot at leading the country in 3's as a team and as individuals if we can drive, draw and kick.

Seems like that group talk withthe five on the floor paid off with a late game run that was a bit beastly. Steal and FB out of the TO was the kiss of death.

Just got back...not the prettiest game, but these exhibitions rarely are. There's a lot to work on until the opener, and we never looked like a "team" until the very end. But, those sorts of struggles are to be expected with so many new guys on the court and the disjointed substitution patterns of the night. On to Tennessee-Martin (yippee!).

Offut - sounds like he is what I was expecting - was a "?" to many. Borna's opinion looks to be right on.

Sounds like a typically messy first game/exhibition game start. Turnaround at the end though sounds impressive - able to "finish" - an issue last couple years.

I was on road in Cleveland tonight - could not find a OHIO broadcast anywhere on the dial (maybe this game was not broadcast on the "network"?)

Looking forward to Sunday!

Groce seemed to use the game to play with the rotation and get the new guys a lot of minutes.  Mercyhurst was a pretty good team.  They were big and seemed to make a lot of timely 3's.  When the starters were put back in, the got several steals, fast break points and finished the game easily.  Stevie Taylor looked pretty good and I really liked the size of Gourd.  Offutt was solid and can jump out of the gym.

I liked the play of Reggie too.  He seems lighter and faster.  He also played more aggressively than he did last year.  Let's hope he has confidence this season.  Ivo and Nick were solid.  Dj did not play much.  Not sure why.  Jacobs didn't dress.  Is he injured?

Stats don't quite show how impressive Taylor was.  The couple minutes where Cooper and him were both on the floor were exciting to watch, just because they both were capable of slipping into the lane and dishing outside.

Offutt can hit and is obviously a player, but he didn't seem completely in sync.

I agree with most of the comments here -- lots of good observations.  I will add that Offutt is looked like the real deal to me.  I also wonder what happened to Jacobs.  Is he going to end up as a totally wasted scholarship in terms of any real contribution to the program?  I had very high hopes when he was recruited, but his lack of PT seems to be really telling a different story at this juncture.

Edit: I see the comment that Jacobs might have been injured, or ill or something.  Does anyone know for sure?  Also, any idea why DJ didn't play in the first half?  Was he in some kind of "limited dog house" by the coach?

Lonnie's story on the BA.com homepage says Jacobs had a sore leg and ankle.

Add Kellogg to those 3 and you get 4 of the best guards......anywhere.

Definitely excited about the guard potential. Just wish they had an inside presence.
