Got a shocked email from my son about the new "entrance page" on Ohiobobcats.com. I'm not exactly with the times, but I guess the new basketball slogan they are using has a very suggestive double meaning. If you're as confused as I was, a quick Google search for "show me your O" will tell you all you need to know. Hint: The suggestive saying has the word "face" on the end.

Not trying to be the old fuddy-duddy here, but this seems like a very poor choice of slogans. As much as we try to position ourselves as fun/affordable family entertainment, there is no need to even hint at something that is sexually suggestive. Perhaps no one in the AD has thought of this, but I'd have to think someone has?

Thoughts??

TO be honest I think it is much ado about nothing.

SHow me your O with his hands in an O is a pretty neat deal that has nothing to do with an O FACE in my mind. I might actually start doing that when someone in London or Atlanta yells  "Go Bobcats!" at random tmes.....or even when some idiot sees me in Ohio gear and yells....O H! . I will just hold my hands up and show him my O.

You are an old fuddy duddy.....if you want to know where this comes from I submit the following. I applied for a particular license for my motorcycle (SPLOOE) and gave documentation as to where it came from . It was denied and I responded to the secreatary of state with the following and then his minion's reply came leaving me supremely pissed off and scurrying for ammunition which I am still gathering.  Old fuddy duddies think too much about what the massess dont even put together.

Dear Mr Waddell

I am not in the habit of writing authorities but this is beyond insanity. I am appealing to you in hopes that our state government is a bit more informed and streamlined when people go out of their way to document and provide background for requests. When it is all there in front of them and the employee fails to act accordingly citizens need to have their voice heard.

I requested a vanity plate  SPLOOE which is an abreviated a form of SPLOOIE which exists as a plate on alumni of the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle corps in many states including the Home of Drum Corps International, Indiana I was sent an auto tag which expired 7/6 to replace my motorcycle tag which expired 7/1 along with a letter for appeal procedure. The letter explained the word had a vulgar meaning. An auto tag to hang on my bike? The state trooper laughed and also laughed when he found that it had a 5 day grace "as if anything happens in government in 5 days"

I directed them to this website for the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle corps and to the traditions page which explained the nature of the word. I printed all the materials for resubmission. I also looked in the Urban Dictionary which defines the word Splooie as meaning "have a nice day" . Surely we do not want drivers looking up the meaning to find out that the motorcyclist was wishing them a nice day do we?

Today I received a plate in the mail ....after putting over 2000 miles on the temp tag  from Ilinois to Ohio ....my new plate is M871 KG. Obviously the employee still finds something vulgar in the word Splooie.  I am appalled.

I am personally inviting you (and the lunatic plate czar sitting in a dark office arbitrarily denying plates even well documented ones)  to visit withthe young men who make up this organization when they make it to Indy for the World Championship at Lucas Oil when they come to town in August. When they yell SPLOOIE  on the starting line to honor 60 years of Cavaliers who came before them you and your appointed czar of vanity plates might rethnk what you consider vulgar.

Sorry for having to trouble you with this but at some level government needs to be accountable. Thanks very much for your attention.

Dr Thomas E Freeman II

I got back this reply and am currently contemplating my next move. My uncle is an English professor in the IU system and has shared this with many of the profs there who have had a heydey with it.

Dr. Freeman:

BMV Commissioner Scott Waddell asked me to research the issue about your personalized license plate and reply on his behalf.

The BMV has a committee to review all requests for Personalized License Plates (PLP).  I sit on that committee and have been amazed at the ways applicants attempt to disguise vulgar, obscene and other offensive words.  One of the most common ways is to use slang phrases, texting abbreviations and other slight variations of these words.  In addition to the committee members’ personal review of the requests, we have use resources such as the Urban Dictionary to identify problems.

An unfortunate result of this review is that requests innocently submitted by some people are too similar to an unacceptable phrases or words.  We err on the side of keeping the “bad stuff” off the plates and  deny the “innocent” ones.  This is certainly the situation with your plate.  The word “splooey” is slang for a human excretion and your request for “splooe” is just too close to be allowed.    I hope that you can appreciate our dilemma.

Concerning the temporary tag, we did send you an auto tag instead of a motorcycle tag in error.

If you have any further questions, please contact me directly.

Dennis L. Rosebrough

Deputy Commissioner - External Affairs

Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles

SO yeah....I think we as adults make much too much of double meanings and try to read much too much into things even when we are presented with materials. One letter off....coupld be Splooie (which already is in Use in IN) or Splooey .....Splooe actually has no meaning in any dictionary which further negates the point.

From now on ....I show my O

I'm in my late 30's and haven't gotten my "fuddy duddy" card yet, but I do think it's pretty borderline.

I've seen some t-shirts with this saying on it (here or here, for example), and I just don't think it's really appropriate to use with OU Athletics. I can see both sides here, but IMO a college basketball slogan shouldn't contain anything remotely suggestive. I don't want my kids running around saying "show me your o" to the neighbors...

You know what........why did we just not put that SEX at the top?

Cromwell. Freeking Puritans. Lighten up Francis

Wheres the Beef? You think Clara Peller was looking for some young meat? That new commercial will hit soon and t shirts with wheres the beef will be de riguer. Hit me baby one more time. Did yall forbid your kids to not listen to that song? I could go on and on.....not everything in the world is sexually suggestive and many of the things you actually accept as daily life are waaaaaaayyyyy more over the top than this.

eeeeshhhh when my kid started listening to rap in 5th grade I had the talk with him. "SOn ...I know I am not going to keep you from hearing these words and phrases., I do expect you to know what is in good taste and what is not and if I hear these things eminating fromthe mouth of the young gentleman I am raising there will be consequences...you understand?". THat actually turned out pretty well by all accounts.

I like the "O". I do not associate that symbol with Sex but I think if i gave it weight and made it a bad thing my kids might just pick up on it and think it was something that actually meant something

. I actually thought it had to do with their Offensive potency and the number of weapons they bring to the table this coming year......I see it as uniquely Ohio. BTW ....young nick (a major scoring threat) does not look like he is experiencing anything that I would associate with an Orgasm as he is holding his O high. Seeen loooooooots of O faces on the fairer sex but I am not sure that look he is wearing qualifies even on a stone face like Swank

For some of us, this is the only "O" we get to make.

So I try to make mine as loud and big as possible.

I don't see the problem.   O = Ohio

If they had a scantily clad woman or man on the front in a suggestive pose then I could see it but I don't see the problem with what is being portrayed.

Below is my O face

Here is my O face

Jeff, I wouldn't know either, so don't feel so bad. Borna, it seems like you spent quite a lot of time trying to get this vanity plate. I never got the vanity plate thing. First off, you had better not park in front of a strip club as someone will drive by and say "Dr Borna must be giving the girls their annual physical again this week"!

Call me a fuddy-duddy, but I'm personally glad they changed the slogan. "Show your O" gets across the same point with far less innuendo.

If there was any doubt that the AD reads this board, think again. I think we're being watched!

I have never had a vanity plate but I dont fear it. I live my Gramps simple rule. "Son, if it dont look good on the front page of the Muncie Star then don't do it" therefore you would never find me in the position you describe Giacomo. I do think the vanity plate on my cars or trucks would be a bad thing as I blow by them on the way to Athens, After spending 10 days driving in England I can see why the rest of the world thinks we are total self absorbed Arseholes.

Hooray for Loves plate Ohio seems to be more lax about these things .....on the way to Athens last week I saw a late model high performance vehicle with UCANSMD which I am sure stands for See my Derriere

Frameworks is my favorite, 76 was my favorite of the 5 years I was there. Continue to work with Cavaliers Medical Group in support functions with 23 other docs, a plethora of nurses, PT's ATC's etc. Been doing that since the 80's, didnt know we had any fans here.

We have always known the Athletic dept sneaks their iPads into the bathroom and reads this board where no one will see them.

Finally I am glad that the fuddy duddies feel better about the wording. I have been practicing making my O hanfds so that the next idjut that yells O-H in respnse to one of my green and white shirts gets an immediate show of O hands

In highschool our softball team had a poster with the saying "chicks with sticks" I must of been the only person who saw the double meaning becasue no one made any kind of deal about it or people just don't care about those things.

I must be beyond "fuddy duddy" too and I'm only 23. I never made the connection at all. I think this is harmless and I don't think they intended it to be an innuendo.

Also, I had no idea splooey was a slang term for that either? I've heard of splooge, but not splooey.

I think that's Dana Holgorsen's next splash screen for WVU.

Get the F to West F'in Virginia!

Nahhhhhh

I am enamoured already. Anytime I am in an airport and hear that familiar O-H! I am showing my O.

It is a simple splash page on the website that has gained some traction. If Oregon does it that is fine. They are half a world away to me.

Lemme show my O early and often.

At least from the example on ohiobobcats.com, this looks like a different kind of O than the one O$U players were making with those gloves.  This looks like a double O -- one with the hands and one with the arms.  Kind of redundant for emphasis.

Devier Posey knows all about that after getting flagged for excessive celebration twice against Michigan.  How you do it a second time after getting the 15 yarder the first time is beyond me.  All in all, i don't think it's very unique, but if the student-athletes embrace it, im fine with it.

With a name like Waddell, the Indiana BMV commissioner must know all about this stuff.
