As a season ticket holder, if it takes a 2-for-1 to get a few brand name schools in the Convo, I'm up for.

The problem is that these "brand name" schools are even willing to do that.   The only way good teams are going to be willing to play us is for us to get better consistently.  A good way to do that is to play home games.  Unfortunately for some reason it didn't work that way last year but it's generally a good philosophy.  Schedule good teams for 1-and-1s (teams consistently 100 or better RPI no matter what league they play in).  Butler wasn't playing a much better schedule that we are 10 or 15 years ago.  They got consistently good and all of a sudden they were able to get good teams to play them.

JSF is spot on...several of us have heard directly from Shaus' mouth that the strategy is to schedule more home games, not schedule bad teams. We just can only get bad teams to come play in Athens right now. Whether or not that is a good strategy or not is debatable...but I side with the OUV way of thinking.

Whether it's for "home games" or "bad teams", as a season ticket holder, this schedule just doesn't excite me. Of course I'll renew my seats, but I just don't get up for St. Francis, Kennesaw State, Texas A&M Corpus Cristi, etc. I suppose you have theses sorts of games everywhere, but it's not helping to generate interest/excitement in the program with the casual fan.

Trying to recap what we "know" (or think we know):

Home
Kennesaw State
Tennessee-Martin
Arkansas State
St. Bonaventure (return game)
Robert Morris
Winthrop (Brackbuster return game)
Canisius??
Marietta College

Away
Marshall (alternates home-away)
Wright State (Bracketbuster return game)
Louisville
Nebraska??

Anyone else have any insight? Last year we had 14 non-conference games, and above are 12 teams. So presumably, there's room for a couple more.

I'm more interested in pushing for a big-name opponent to come to town after the switch to semesters and the students can actually go to the game.

Marietta is not going to be a regular season game. If any of you would look at their schedule. I also have contacts within the team. They have a game the day after you guys project the game to be on.

This is actually a good point.  I just hope that Schaus & Co. are thinking this way.  Back in the day, when we had Big 10 teams come calling at the Convo, it was always in December when the students were still on campus.

When we played Ohio Valley, it was a regular season game for us and an exhibition for them. That can easily be the case with Marietta.

This is where I'd love to see the NCAA mandate some form to OOC scheduling.  We should be afforded the opportunity to play some of the big boys, and we should be forced to play some of the lower tier teams.  Break the D1 teams into 3 tiers based on prior year RPI or something, require 1 home and 1 away within each tier or something.

I know it will never happen, it just drives me crazy that the NCAA can't do anything like this.

I agree, It should happen.  What's it going to hurt in the grand scheme of things to require bigger conference teams to play at mid majors arena's/gym's?  If you're so good  ( _____ insert "bigtime" basketball program here___ ) why are you afraid to play an inferior opponent on the road?  I'd just like to see it required that a "big school" is required to give smaller schools a 1 for 1 a certain percentage of the time.  Say, maybe 30 or 40 percent.  You can't do 1 for 1 for everyone, but it I would also think it could help alleviate scheduling challenges.

Doubt highly we will have a return from Winthrop next season. They went to the 2 year plan to balance home and away games from the program, so it seems likely we would get that game in the 2012-2013 season.

It will be interesting to see when our schedule is released. The non-conference slate was released last year  on July 6, but for most of the years before that it was mid-August before it was released.

And that is going to be next season. I think this years schedule is already made, let's work on next years.

The problem the Ohio program has is not wins, its RPI. Its not having the basketball team play enough on TV or against recruits. I read in the Bobcat annual report that Ohio was 1 of only 3 MAC teams to only have 1 losing season in the last so many years. Clearly when you are winning 19 or 20 games a year its enough winning but the RPI has looked like garbage since we stopped playing the kind of schedules we used to play when Boeh was AD. I will conceed that names for the most part are not important. I would still want to see the creation of the Ohio Valley 5 (Ohio, Marshall, WVU, Duquense, Pitt) basketball series and participation in at least 1 major preseason tournament a year. Hopefully then with higher RPI that will also translate into a recognizable brackebuster opponent home and away annually instead of a regular 200 RPI+ team. I want more home games too but RPI and the stature of who you are playing is also important to build interest in the program.

The Ohio Valley Challenge . . . I like the idea.  With our AD's connections to Morgantown, our growing relationship with Marshall, I see this as something that might be doable, but it will require a lot of innovative thinking, negotiation, and marketing.  Pitt, with its current AD, might be a problem -- but at least we are talking basketball not football.

What connections? The hey Oliver Luck, I want your job, so will you help me connection? Jim has been here how long? Those connections have gotten us how many games? NOTHING against JIM, WVU does not want to play us in Athens and they are not consistently good enough to hold out, in my opinion if they won't come to Athens we shouldn't play them!

Really??

Outside of Winthrop and Robert Morris, I don't think any of those schools have made the NCAA Tournament in the last 25 years (if ever). Don't get me wrong, I'll still be there every game, but this might be the most underwhelming home slate yet...

Kennesaw and UT-M have never made it.  All the rest have danced between '96 and today.

On the bright side, you have a coach that has been to the Final 4 less than 5 years ago on the schedule.....

I'll let you guys figure it out. Hint, it's the head man at one of the whipping boys mentioned above.

That would have to be John Brady, former LSU HC, who's now the HC at Arkansas State. At least that provides an interesting storyline to an otherwise mediocre opponent...

Not only that, but there's a Sweet 16 team from last year's NCAA tournament on that list, too.  Don't know what you guys are complaining about.

Yes, Div III sweet 16. We should play WVU every year at their place if we can. It's a short drive and we can win there most years. Deal in reality, not castles in the air. If we are to upgrade our schedule, it will have to be done on the road. I would like to see us play 3 or 4 games like that a year, even on the road.

Would be fine with us playing WVU on the road, but I don't think we would have a viable chance to win there most seasons.

Your contacts have let you down...the Waynesburg game was cancelled and the Bobcats were added to the 14th. Schedule should reflect that now (http://pioneers.marietta.edu/schedule.aspx?path=mbball). For personal reasons, I am really looking forward to this game.

Someone really thinks I should have to pay money to watch us play Marietta as a regular season game?

I'm really sick of this stuff. I buy the season ticket packages, knowing full well I could walk into the game for $1 on most nights.

You can't keep tossing these little Marietta, Ohio Valley, Rio Grande garnishes into the schedule and expect season ticket holders not to get ticked.

Exhibitions I understand, but these regular season adds are past ridiculous.

December 14th, when we should be playing a I-A opponent we are stuck with Marietta. Absolutely unbelievable.

And we get upset when we feel shafted because Auburn won't come play us at Peden, or the Tar Heels won't play us at the Convo. It sounds a lot like we have become what we hate. We've suddenly become too good for people. I understand it's Division 3 basketball and I know that we want better opponents coming into the Convo, but I guarentee Marietta is better than a lot of low major D1 schools that we would have scheduled instead. Low major games that NO ONE would have come to.
