Marshall travels a lot better than Louisville or UC, especially to Athens.  UC doesn't even travel that well to Oxford.  I agree Ohio is not Big East bound for a number of reasons, but I was in two Big East stadiums (OU @ Rutgers/Louisville @ WVU) this season for games that were not close to filling up.  I think media markets drive expansion now and unfortunately Athens is in the Parkersburg/Marietta media market.  It's not exactly appealing to advertisers/corporate sponsors.

Hasn't Athens been fluctuating between the Huntington-Charleston market and the Columbus market for several years now?  I think it's in the Huntington-Charleston market now.  But your point is well taken.  Ohio does not bring the essentials in media market to join a conference like the Big East.

I know there is a larger population but what media markets does Greenville, NC bring?

A market big enough to put 50K in the seats every game even in a down year.  We are high-fiving when we hit 20K. Their season ticket sales produced $27M in revenue this year.

Size does matter.  With a few exceptions in the Big Least b-ball only schools, nearly all the schools in the Big 6 basketball and AQ football conferences have graduating classes that are about as big as our total enrollment.  That's why they can put 50,000+ butts in their football stadiums six or seven or eight times a season.  Until we can get 35-40,000 on campus, we're not going to be able to think about joining them.  This likely will never happen because imo the future of college attendance is online, not in the classroom.  ECU has 27,000 enrollment and a 50,000-seat stadium mainly because they've had good programs through the years and NC is not traditionally a good football state.  They don't have an O$U to compete with.  In addition, that part of NC is pretty well-off with lots of tourism and industry.

Football and basketball have to win championships every year and the non-conference schedule has to be brutal like Boise State in football and Gonzaga/Memphis in hoops.  Get ranked in both sports and you get noticed.

I change opinion:  We definitely need more threads about us going up-conference.  And it is definitely going to happen.  Only question is will we be in the SEC or the big ten/dozen next year.

Just a quick look came up with the following:

Villanova - approximately 10,375 both undergrad/grad
Georgetown - approximately 16,900 with 7600 undergrad
St. John's - approximately 21,500 both undergrad/grad
Seton Hall - approximately 9,700 both undergrad/grad
Marquette - approximately 11,000 both undergrad/grad

Yes, these are all Big East, but I agree that the statement that the Big 6 conferences all have graduating classes larger than our total enrollment is just not true.

What is Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., New York City and Milwaukee, Alex.

Almost all thte BCS schools either are in a large urban center, have a large portion of their state as a fanbase and/or are huge.  We barely dominate our city in coverage.

What an amazing and accurate statistic!

The enrollment for OU is over 17,000 for the Athens campus.  I won't even include satellite branches.

Enrollment for a few Big 6 AQ schools:

19,535 - Stanford
19,453 - Clemson
18,232 - Washington State
15,657 - Miami
14,988 - Northwestern
14,886 - Baylor
14,640 - Boston College
14,248 - Duke
12,093 - Vanderbilt
9,142  -  TCU
7,079  - Wake Forest
