      Noticed Kenny Belton was not on the bench for yesterday's game v. Morgan St. He was in uniform and on the bench for Ohio's previous home game v. Arkansas St. (not sure about the two road games in between). Anyone know why?

As the camera scanned the OHIO bench last night @Portland I didn't see Belton in his customary seat right next to Ethan either.  Later I looked at the quick camera glance of those in street clothes and didn't see him there either?

Coach did say prior to the season starting that he needed to loose weight and get into shape.
I read that as he is a practice player at this point and wouldn't make the trips if he's not available to play.
If we don't see him on the bench by the start of the conference season we probably won't see him period.

I believe they are nursing an issue with his back.  I don't think it's related to the back issues that forced him to stop playing at Cincy.  I think the staff is hoping he's ready to go by the start of MAC play.

When I was looking up the lines for this weekend's MAC games they listed both Jacobs and Belton out.   Jacobs was listed as "Out indefinitely - ankle" and Belton was listed as "Out indefinitely - illness."  Don't know how accurate either is.

Got to see the last 2 1/2 minutes on the web.  Both Belton and Jacobs looked good considering the rust that was on them.  Liked Kenny's over the shoulder flips under the bucket.  Four pts and a board in about 2 minutes.  Good job, even in clean-up.

Once January rolls around, can we rely on Belton to give 6-10 quality minutes per game? Is he in shape? Glad to hear he played.

He can definitely help.

I think Groce will pick his spots to use Belton during MAC play. Quite useful against Ball State and Buffalo especially.

He makes Otis Polk look like a bantamweight.

He does not appear to be in good shape, but he is definitely a wide body.  He was also nimble for someone his size.  He looked good for the time he was in.

Glad to see Kenny play tonight.  I think he could be helpful for small stretches in MAC play.

My guess is that the coaching staff deemed Kenny still not ready for more than what he did tonight, but I would've liked to seen him mixed into the rotation of a game tonight that was nothing more than a scrimmage that counted on our record.  The Portland game aside, I'm thinking Kenny will bring more to the table than what we've seen of Jon Smith who looks the part, but is a total non-contributor.  Not sure if Kenny could/would to any better, but I would've like to have seen him get mixed in the rotation the first half vs. late game garbage time just to see how he fit with the normal rotation.

Disagree w/ChickenGeorge per Smith. I see him developing, has a way to go yet but certainly developing. Defense and rebounding are what is being expected from him - we have plenty of Offensive threats I think.

It was Great to see Kenny get on the floor. He is WIDE - but looks to have some finesse. He was obviously slowing down over just 2.5 minutes on the court - but he can take up a lot of space on defense - an additional asset coming off the bench. The crowd adulation had him grinning, looked almost suprised - loved it.

Smith a non-contributor? Disagree. He's not expected to bring much on the offensive end. It's his D, rebounding and blocked shots that show him to be a contributor.

YUP, we disagree (then again I don't think RS and I could agree on what color Marietta is--I would say navy blue, he would probably say a "dark" navy blue).  If you're looking at Jon Smith to do the intangibles of rebounding, playing defense, protecting the rim/blocking shots, or the dirty work (ie:  a Dennis Rodman or Kurt Rambis type role) I would say he's much too soft.  He's a finesse type player in my opinion.  It's working right now and he's the best option we have right now, but my guess is that if Goard or Belton progress they will be taking some/ most of Mr. Smith's minutes when the rotation shrinks near the end of the season.

Much too little of a sample size to compare to Ed or anyone else.  Not enough PT and as stated on this site, not in top phyiscal condition.  My guess is that if his health holds out and he sticks with it, we will see what he has to offer during the last third of this season and next year (if there is a next year).  Right now I would agree Smith is the best (only) option to rotate with Baltic & Keely, but my gut is that the staff is open to the possibility of Goard and/or Belton having opportunities to add some additional strength to this tandem.

i would have liked to see Smith against better competition.  He does not have much offense, but he is a contributor on defense.  His ups and that long wingspan of his come in handy.  When he gets a rebound, he makes his outlet pass faster than anybody i can remember in the MAC, and my memory goes back to guys like Kozelko and Roundfield in the 70s.  

After watching the Marietta game, I can see why Groce believes this to be his most athletic team since he got here.  If we had just a bit more talent to go with that athleticsm underneath, we'd be awfully tough.  But I don't think Belton is the guy.  Maybe you'll get a good 3 min stretch from him here and there, but that's it.   Hate to say it, but if  he was any good, he wouldn't be here, the need for even modestly talented big men (6'10"+) throughout all of college basketball being what it is.

Way too early to tell per comparisons to Big Ed, but certainly a valid question (soft hands look to be a similarity). Agree with some that have said he will likely slowly get more PT as the season progresses, and may be near the end of the season a 5 minute a game contributor. His insertion into the lineup could cause a significant disruption to opponents offensive scheme - get them out of their flow.

I can't argue with what the official College info say's - Navy Blue. But looked to me like a lot of the Marrietta fans were wearing something with a little more purple in the hue - maybe more of an indigo?

I think Smith will continue to progress - as will Goard and Belton - what a great scenario!

Completely disagree. Jon Smith has had some bad games and inconsistent efforts through much of the season, but I don't think we've seen enough to label him a non-contributor, and cut him out of the rotation. Reports from fall quarter practices and the closed scrimmage with OSU had him as our best big man. Patience.

As for Goard and Belton hopefully we get to a place where we can get 5-10 minutes a game between the two of them. I've liked what I've seen from Goard so far this year, I don't think Belton has really been healthy enough to judge, but it was good to see a few things in his few minutes of PT tonight.

It is oh so nice to have some depth for a change.

Can't say I agree with this - it is way too early to tell, as others have said.  Apparently Tuesday was his first day of full out practice.  His medical situation makes his a unique situation and he may end up contributing a lot.  Those 3 minutes last night were intriguing.

Bruce, Kenny fell into our lap. He was originally at UC and had interest from a number of high-major schools. He was the #7 player at his position in North Carolina in high school. We got him because he's been hurt. He has the talent.

However, last night he looked really slow. It's going to take him a while to get up to speed. You can see the potential, though.

I don't see any downside to having a guy with his size battle with the other team's biggest player for 3-6 minutes...especialy if OHIO has foul problems. Sounds like too me that he can be more of factor mid-way through the MAC season if he can get in shape.
