Please oh please don't let Eastern Michigan be the one MAC home game we don't get. Chase and the revamped O Zone could have some real fun.

Bates will either score 30 a night or never set foot on campus.

Obviously a big get for EMU and the MAC. I watched a couple of Memphis games last season when Bates played. He looked really long and athletic, but I felt like the hype wasn't justified when I watched them. Small sample size, though, and he very well might shred the MAC. He forced a lot of bad shots in the couple of games I watched.

He also missed a lot of time. Was it a back injury?

It was a "Penny sucks as a coach and is overrated" problem.

All second hand, but I got drunk in Memphis with a guy who is a big Memphis basketball booster and alum and close to the program.

He said Emoni was a headcase and a big problem.

I'd bank on EMU having the biggest increase in attendance in the country this year.

He's used to being the team not part of one. Dad doesn't help. He's used to being the focal point of his team and isn't enough of a team player to be helpful if he's not, especially if he's pouting like he did last year (errr, I mean he had back problems).

The most high profile kid my son played against, albeit in 6th grade. He was 6'4" then on a hand-picked team his Dad put together for him. The best player my son played against didn't get nearly the publicity, Jarace Walker, but I'd take him 100 times out of 100 over Bates. He'll do whatever needs to be done.

No way any other school has a 100% increase!

It's no secret his dad caused a lot of trouble at Memphis.

A lot of news outlets have been reporting Penny told Bates he wouldn't have a second year in Memphis. The headache was just too large.

Big programs stayed away entirely, not because "Penny sucks as a coach and is overrated" but because not only does Bates not take to coaching, he doesn't want to be coached. His dad also does not want him to be coached.

These series of bad decisions made by his dad go way back. His dad pulled him out of high school - from a team coached by a family friend - to create his own academy staring his son.

When he started being viewed as no longer the #1 prospect in 2022, his dad forced him to reclassify from 2022 and go to Memphis - where it all came unglued when he didn't have the immediate success he's used to playing vs inferior competition.

From CBS:

"It was clear almost immediately that Emoni Bates was not ready for college basketball. He began the season as a starter, but saw his minutes get slashed after he combined to go 5 of 23 from the field in consecutive games. He only played 15 minutes against the Crimson Tide and was benched for nearly the entire second half. In a related note, Memphis won that game to snap a four-game losing streak, at which point it became clear the Tigers were better without him.

A little more than a month later, Bates left the team and returned home to Michigan."

Now EB is on his way back to EMU, not because he wants to come home, but because there was nowhere else to go.

A one man show, that is on its way to his fourth team in four years.

What was the name of the 5 star kid that played for his dad at Central? Not sure he even ever made All-MAC. Left when his dad was fired.

I'll leave that one to someone else, I'm not sure. James Thompson IV at EMU, known best for his fights with Gavin Block, was a high level recruit at South Carolina if I remember correctly. 4 star maybe?

"Who's your coach, Daddy is" chant incoming. Fingers crossed we get East Mich at home. Mo Njie replacement, a loudmouth player we will give endless grief to. Backstory on Njie - We trashed talk battled the whole game and was so satisfying to look his way at the end and point at the scoreboard. Will dig up all the dirt I can on this guy.

To me, the ultimate father-son basketball combo will always be Press & Pistol Pete Maravich. The offense was simple: throw the ball to my son and let him shoot.

Here's a quote from Press' Wikipedia entry:

"Upon offering the LSU scholarship to Pistol, Press told his boy that 'If you don't sign this ... don't ever come into my house again.'{Pistol: The Life of Pete Maravich}. Pete originally wanted to go to the West Virginia University but finally agreed to go to LSU if his dad bought him a car. (Pistol: The Life of Pete Maravich.)

What a combo!

Bates scored 29 straight points in the first half last night.

The play-by-play on ESPN is wild.

Ended up with 43 points, 7 boards in another EMU loss.

He was 15 of 23 from the field, 9 of 14 from 3.
