Pretty interesting article

Some of you remember watching the Rocket play. Others remember the magazine cover. Article is facsinating inasmuch as the great one still is giving back to the game... seeing how those kids inthe article see their place in the succession of the game is also refreshing. Love ad respect the game and it will love you back.

Shooters are built from the feet up and then perfected and made consistent through good practice  habits and constant repitition of good shooting habits. to refine that thought....... Coach Rhodes says constantly.....lotsa "shooters" in the world, not a whole lotta "makers" anyone can be a shooter takes work to be a maker. .

Thanks for posting this, borna.  Next time you see Rick ask him him if he remembers his trip to Athens in December of 1969.    I think he may have repressed it from his memory.  Snyder's box and one defense kept him well below his average and gave the 'Cats the win.

BTW, how many high school teams have a head coach, a shooting coach and a strength coach?

Note: I edited my error in the original post about the nature of Snyder's defensive strategy against The Rocket.

Ha

COmments are flying tonite. I had a Coach who offered one of our Muncie Central athletes call me tonite. Knowing he played at Miami I asked if he wanted a ticket to Gary Trent day given that he had played against him....he said "ask him about how he gets along with Devin Davis" . I suppose I will have to buy him a beer up next summer during summer evaluation period and get the inside story on that one.

I owuld like to get to Zionsville- Lebanon and see Dakich and Mount in the same gym rooting for their respective teams.

Most HS here in Indiana not only have those coaches you alluded to and a couple more including volunteer positions for individual workouts and agility training especially at the 3a and 4a levels (big boy basketball)...... but the athletes are required to be enrolled in "PC" during the year. Personal COnditioning is a PE class that takes care of their daily lifting on school time and does not waste precious practice hours.

I've heard that Snyder was innovative, but . . .a triangle and one defense? I've heard of a box and one. I've heard of a triangle and two. But a triangle and one? Where was the fifth Bobcat? Cherry picking?

Thanks for the post, borna.   I never get tired of hearing about and seeing legends from my youth. Rick Mount is one, although shooting tennis balls into peanut cans over the garage rafters is a little tough to swallow.

Over the summer, I got a handshake from Jerry West in a restaurant.  You wouldn't believe how much that meant to an old guy like me.  This was only a few weeks before his book was released.  Not knowing what we know now, he was the picture of the All American boy still at age 70.  I knew immediately that I couldn't guard him.

You want a great account of West....read the one I believe is in Rice's bio on Adolph Rupp. Rupp had a hatred but also  a great respect for West after coaching against him. IIRC he kept the towel they gave West to use to control the bleeding after one of his Wildcats broke West's nose and he played through it to finish the game. Adolph used that story for years to motivate his players to play with toughness.

I worshiped Devin Davis when I was like 10. He swung by Miami's youth skills camp when I was there and autographed my camp tee the morning after the NBA draft. I remember he seemed pretty bummed out about not being picked.

Ha ha!  You caught me on that one. I should learn not to post too late at night.  I believe what I meant to say was "diamond and one."  But, I guess that I'm just geometrically challenged.  Yes, as I recall folks referred to it at the time as both a diamond and one and a box and one.

Speaking of strange basketball "formations" has anyone here ever seen the "swinging gate offense"?  I only saw this once and couldn't begin to describe it accurately.  It was in a high school game and the coach employed it in the last quarter to great effect.  It involved multiple picks and almost looked like a football formation where the picks were blocks opening up holes in the line.  BTW, I edited the error in my original post so as to look only half stupid.

Davis was a nice player. Didn't he have a cup of coffee with the Cavs, or am I thinking of Ira Newble?

Wanted to ask you OCF, If I wear my normal OHIO gear to say hi to Coach Mount you think PTSD will set in>>>?

Newble was a serviceable role player with the Cavs for a few seasons. At Miami camp, I challenged him to one on one and he blocked all of my shots.

I asked Davis, when he was signing my shirt, if he had at least heard from anyone and he said the Hawks liked him but liked other players a little better.
