We win the next 4 and we will be ranked, no doubt about it, positively, absolutely.

Oh please. This is a message board, not the locker room. Why do the fans need to "focus" on the next game. Our discussion means nothing.

If in 2 weeks the Cats are 14-1 after Kennesaw State, Robert Morris and Bowling Green games (next 3) they should be top 25 in at least one poll.

A lot depends too on how the ranked teams and the teams with votes immediately ahead of the Cats do.  In the AP poll, the 20-25 teams are Creighton, Pitt, Virginia, Harvard & San Diego St.  The teams with votes are Kansas St, Illinois, St. Louis, Gonzaga & Xavier.  In USAT/ESPN its Murray St., Pitt, Harvard, Virginia & Kansas St ranked and San Diego St., Illinois, Xavier, St. Louis, Stanford & Gonzaga.  Xavier and Gonzaga play this week.  Pitt has a pretty good ND team and Harvard has a so-so Boston Coll.  K-State has a stretch starting next week with Kansas, Missouri and Baylor -- all ranked teams.  UVA has a good LSU team next Monday.  So there's some room to get in.

Boy, being ranked would be fun.  But, we gotta take care of business.  Kennesaw State.

And then we better be ready for Robert Morris.  They are 10-3 right now and that program is solid.  The Convo should be rocking.  The Bobcats need to be focused and not try to show off or it will be a big L.

I think Jeff is just cautioning us against getting too excited too soon, as is his wont.

Yes.  Historically when the football or basketball team gets on the brink of the Top 25, we get punched in the nuts pretty hard.  The punch hurts less as a fan when you just focus on 1 game at a time, and not map out the next 4 games as wins.  I will join in, however, and say just the next 3 games would most likely do it (since the polls will come out following that Saturday game at BG) as enough of the next 10ish teams ahead of us would suffer losses.

But I prefer to shake my head wondering where we would be ranked if we held on at Louisville.  We'd be nearing the top 10.

Easy there.  A narrow road loss to the apparent #4 team in the country wouldn't bump you up 20 spots in the rankings.

Now a loss to BGSU or Robbert Morris might drop you as much . . .

A top-25 ranking only puts a larger bullseye on our backs than we already have by just being Ohio.  We already get everyone's best shot.  A number next to our name just makes it worse.  However, I think finally, for once, we're up for it.  What Groce has done in regards to our teams' mentality cannot be understated.

I'm guessing that Groce is coaching them more or less the same way he coached them the past few seasons. If true, that tells me that a key difference might be in some of the players, how they listen and what lies between their ears. On the other hand, sometimes a persistent message pays dividends a long time after you start repeating it.

Ohio reached #14 in the AP poll in December of 1994, and then came crashing down to earth by losing some MAC games. I believe that was the team that eventually lost in the NCAA first round to Indiana. I remember being very excited in December and quite disappointed in March. So, even if this team cracks the top 25, I think it would be helpful to remember that the ranking isn't the goal, it's something nice to pass through on the way to the goal.

A win at Louisville would have gotten us on brink of top 15.  too many other teams undefeated or one loss to get in top 10.  Key for the ranking is not a number or a bullseye - but the value it brings come selection Sunday should we have a small stumble and need an at-large.  A large stumble and it means nothing to be ranked in December or January.  The longer we maintain, the less a loss will drop us.

A narrow road loss wouldn't but a road win and an undefeated record on January 1st most certainly would.

What, ME not excited?!  I'm extremely excited about playing Kennesaw State Friday!!

All joking aside, we are playing very good basketball right now.  Fan beliefs help create some of the aura and mojo surrounding the program so I'm just a-drinkin' Coach Groce's Kool-aid by concentrating on the next game...

Kennesaw.

I'd be completely content rolling into Akron at 15-1 and not ranked quite yet, rolling out of town at 16-1, and finding ourselves ranked before 4 consecutive home games that lead into our MAC West schedule.  The Akron game will likely already be packed being on ESPN, and if we're ranked, it gets extra crazy in the JAR.

Note I said nearing the top 10, not in the top 10.  I stand by it...We'd be top 20 already and 10-15 if we took care of business in the next 3 games.  The lowest ranked undefeated team is Murray State at #20 and they haven't played as good a schedule as ours

I dunno.  Bobby Mo has a pretty good record.  But I can see us dropping in rating even if we win a few more in a row.  Not likely for a team (any team) with only one loss this deep into the season.   But given that we're OHIO and not [name a team from a big rep conference here], it could happen.

I don't think we'd be in the top 15. +/- 2 of Murray State would be my estimate. But, alas, it is only conjecture based on an alternate reality. The good part is we have had many more end game situations go in our favor than against.

Edit: That CBS blog linked above has an entry for the Non-BCS Power Pyramid (calm down, OCF). Ohio is on it. Matt Norlander looks like he knows what he's writing. A choice line: "Have been waiting for the chance to include Ohio for a while; it’s worthy."

It's looking like #22 Pitt is about to go down. This bodes well in our quest for the top 25.

I'm all for not putting the cart infront of the horse but, Take care of Kennesaw St, Robert Morris at Home and beat BGSucks on the road, will put Ohio at 14 & 1, when the AP poll comes out Monday Jan 9th, Ohio WILL be ranked in the AP Top 25.  But lets take it one game at a time to get there.
