I have not jumped on the team for taking too many 3's during their slump.  I have felt that most of the looks the past few games were still OK ,and generally within the flow of the normal offense, which does rely on making open jumpers from the perimeter.  There are always going to be a few ill-advised shots in any game, but my observations were that our guys just couldn't buy a bucket, no matter where they shot it from.

Tonight was different.  Our defense set it up by creating some nice hoops in transition, but we also hit a ton of timely threes.  The first one by Nick was a great start, then DJ's bank shot three at the shot clock buzzer was an awful possession with a good result.  It was nice to see the entire team shoot the ball well, while controlling the boards.  Kent is still a pretty good team, and I loved the way the team came out of their mini-slump.  I can't wait for Saturday.  The Convo is going to be electric.

THat is the best penetration, draw, kick and extra pass since mid December, Amazing what the extra pass accomplishes. Opens up the inside for dump downs, outside for uncontested shots. Execution was impeccable.

I'm not sure we shot all that great tonight. About five minutes of second half we couldn't miss, but...What we did do was, in the second half, force a boatload of turnovers that  led to a lot of nicely executed transition baskets. I'd like to see a stat that showed how many possessions Kent had in the first 10 minutes of the first half in which they did not get a shot off. They still finished with a nice percentage for the game, and outshot us by a nice margin statwise, but if you don't get a shot off it doesn't hurt your percentage. Right?

Kent got a lot of dunks and easy baskets down low...those tend to keep the % high.

They did in the first half, and after the game was decided. In the first 10 minutes of the second half, they were a Pillsbury factory. We won this game on defense, IMHO.

+1 BIG TIME. especially on penetration and what that opens up - I think best of the year.

This team plays sooooo much better when they go man to man on defense.  They were playing a lot of zone in the first half and it seemed to lull them to sleep.  Kent got a lot of slashing layups and dunk on the zone.  But the Cats came out with man to man for almost all the 2nd half and it shut that down a lot.  The man-to-man seems to generate more enthusiasm on defense, creating more turnovers and easy transition buckets.  Hope we see more of it.

Same solid lock down defense we've been seeing, just hit more of the open shots and moved around a little more.  Nick seemed to play with a little more "agitated swagger" tonight which I liked to see...Sometimes he is too timid out on that perimeter.  I think we can say Walter found his stroke.

This^

It was nice to see Walter have some arc on his jumper again.

We are defense.  As the offense develops (player skills in a teamwork concept), then, if your name is opposition, you do not want to see us later in the year.

Right on about Nick - he was yelling for the ball a couple times!

What I like about Nick and when he hits a big shot is how he reacts.

Athletes, over the past decade or so, seem to have to show their tough, gangster side after a big dunk, tackle or interception by growling, pumping their chest, and/or yelling out a primal scream. I watch this and wonder why an athlete in this situation can't just display how much fun they're having with a great big smile or chuckle. Then to see Nick do just that after his buzzer-beating 3 at Akron and again last night v. Kent made me smile and told me that Nick is an athlete who doesn't have to prove how tough he is and is actually having fun playing a game.

I've noticed that about Stevie too. When he got that break away after a Smith block, he ran the whole way down with a lil smile and after he hit the lay-up he had the biggest smile. I love watching him play and the amount of fun he has playing.

I think Stevie would be smiling after a root canal.........
