So anyway...

Maybe there isn't another player, yet, that needs a jersey hung. But there is certainly a list of deserving hall of fame candidates.

One thing to take into consideration is the time that has passed since playing days. I think Williams, Hunter, and Freeman should be in the hall of fame at some point. I hope that someday there can be recognition for Armon Bassett as well, but I believe that the academic hurdles to athletic recognition are fair. But it might be too soon for enshrinement for any of these four.

I am very interested in the value the Trent retirement provided going forward. As a graduate from that period, I saw many familiar faces that I'd not seen in years and years. The promotion of the game was clearly outreach to those people that have wandered away over the years and can be steered back into the fold. As a Bobcat Rep I can attest that there are new Bobcat Club members from the Trent era and I'm happy to have them.

I'm not so naive to think that future honors will be timed to do the same. I'm sure there's some chapter in a sports administration textbook about how to do it.

Geno Ford and Brandon Hunter are two names I feel like are worthy of recognition, along with Coach Hunter.  I agree with JSF that Cooper has the potential for career achievement that could be worthy as well.

One thing I think that's worht considering is whether or not some minds are being a little too picky on why a number should be up there.  There's no question in my mind that in the history of Ohio Men's Basketball there have to have been more than four players, plus one coach, that are worthy of having their names and numbers hanging up high.

And while we're on the topic, what about some of the ladies basketball players, and volleyball players?  I personally would much rather have the names of some of the legendary ladies up there than all the international flags.

The next number to hang from the rafters of the Convo should be #40-Caroline Mast. I am troubled that it was not included in the first ceremony. Caroline was the first Mid American Conference player to surpass 2000 points and 1000 rebounds (yeah, before Ron Harper). She was the first Bobcat to be named MAC Player of the Year. Her 2449 points and 1223 rebounds were school and conference records when she graduated. She was a member of the Freshman All American Team and was an academic all american with a 3.89 g.p.a. majoring in math. She is a member of the Ohio University Athletic Hall of Fame and the Mid American Conference Hall of Fame. She was voted player of the decade for the 1980's in the Mid American Conference. She and her team earned a MAC Championship during her time at Ohio. I'm sure I've left out many of her records, as she was humble and hardworking, always giving credit to her teammates for her accomplishments. A model citizen then and now-it's time, no, it's long overdue for Caroline Mast Daugherty's jersey to be raised.

What a fantastic point. Caroline Mast was unreal. Definitely deserving.

Without any doubt, at all, Brandon Hunter deserves to have his number retired.  I can't believe this is even being discussed!

- He was drafted into the NBA.
- 3 time All-MAC 1st team.
- He's in the 2,000 point, 1,000 rebound club.
- Ohio's all-time leading rebounder.
- Ohio's 4th all-time leading scorer.
- He led the entire NCAA in rebouding in his senior season.  Very impressive.
- He played all 4 years and graduated from Ohio.

When his career is over, line it up.  You don't get easier calls than this.

Without a doubt, Caroline Mast deserves to be next.  She's had a very successful career as a high school coach as well.  Not honoring her number is a serious omission.
Start the groundswell of support!

I don't care how much of a jerk Schmidt has been. Retire the man's number.

I also love the idea of honoring volleyball players. We have more than a few to deserve it!

Again, are we really going to go the route of not being a quality, attached alum to keep out Mike Schmidt from his own day and jersey retirement?

He's probably a bit upset with Ohio that nothing more has been done to be honest. Of course, Gary Trent just earned his own day by being a great law-abiding citizen and giving back money his entire NBA career, right?

Mike Schmidt was always known as a stand off guy. So many people take it personal that he isn't out there helping Ohio. He speaks well of the school and Bob Wren.

Guess what? Bob Brenley should be honored as well. We have a college All-American who had a decent pro career and won a World Series as a manager. These guys in baseball don't really have time to stop in Athens, Ohio that often. Let's go ahead and hold it against them though because they didn't donate enough. Maybe reaching out to them again would encourage them to reach into their pockets.

Mike Schmidt Day should have been years ago.

There WAS a Mike Schmidt day...years ago!   How many do we have to do?  He was introduced at halftime of a basketball game and honored with a portrait, etc., as part of his HOF induction.  I believe Glidden was a presenter...maybe even Ping.  How many do we have to do for this guy to have him fulfill his monetary pledge?

I don't know where/when this Mike Schmidt Day was, but since there is very little documentation of it (most notably, a jersey with his name on the back somewhere on the HR wall), I say it does need to be done again.

I feel like I'm beating a dead horse (and I probably am with the current regime heading the baseball program), but you do whatever it takes to get a top 30 baseball player of all-time, and probably the best player ever at his position, back to his university. No one is asking the stadium to be named after him. Frank Baumholtz has his own club seat section for baseball. The fact you can go into Bob Wren Stadium and not have any knowledge that a legend played for our school is much more of an insult than Mike Schmidt pulling back on donation dollars because he needed the money elsewhere.

Again, Schmidt's distance from the university has nothing to do with the university itself, it stems from his relationship with the current baseball coach. Same with Brenly I hear.
