  • They have a very respected head coach in Eddie Biedenbach.  Read his resume and you will be impressed.
  • This is a school and athletic program that puts a major emphasis on academics.  It's a public liberal arts school.
  • They are in the same league with Gardner Webb so maybe we can get some insight from their coaching staff.
  • As others have pointed out, they have some "good" losses this year...very competitive games vs. NC State, UNC, UConn, Tennessee and Charleston.
  • Only really bad loss was a 20 pt. loss to a down Western Carolina team.
  • They really emphasize offense.  They can flat out shoot the ball!  Shooting 50% from the field for the year, can hit the three, and shoot 74% from the line.
  • They do a nice job of taking care of the basketball.
  • They are only average at rebounding.
  • They play a rather fast pace.
  • They give up 45% opponents FG%.
  • Waterford, Ohio's D.J. Cunningham is on the team, but is taking a medical redshirt due to knee injuries.  Sorry he can't play in this one!!

J.P. Primm is their D.J. Cooper. He is really good and does a little bit of everything well. Have to limit him and not let him be a play maker.

One game at a time. Destroy NIU then get ready for UNC Ash and just obliterate them,,,,,, then go to the commish and the powers that be and lodge OUr complaint. Take care of biz then shove it up their backside and remind them of that EVERY year......that is how this program gets leverage and to the next level of legitimacy. Get behind the Cats and support the kids. Every one of them should hear from us as a group or individuals that we want them to destroy the rest of the schedule. Take care of biz one at a time. WHo cares, stuff the stats and make it a mission to put the best of the Big SOuth in their place. Deliver first, talk later.

This game would have been a lot more exciting four years ago when they had 7'7 Kenny George --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Aldtpigsxs&feature=related

I saw him in person when they played Tennessee. It was unbelievable how huge he was. I thought UT's 6'10, 280 lbs Brian Williams was huge, but he looked like a tiny guard when George posted up against him. Dude couldn't play more than 3-4 minutes at a time, but it was quite the sight. Something I'll never forget.

Hard to see in this pic, but that's Wayne Chism who is 6'9 260ish. lol

My favorite memory of watching Kenny George was when Tyler Hansboro dunked on him.

Honestly, I like this matchup.  I just don't like being looked over by ESPN.

As a casual college basketball fan, I am not overlooking or disrespecting UNC-A.  I'm sure the diehards know all about them, but I consider them yet another hyphen team we play.   Fact is, my friends and I pride ourselves on knowing college teams nicknames and I'm pretty sure none of us would know this one.   They're as obscure to OHIO, as OHIO is to them.  Once again, from this fans point of view I thought the BB was an opportunity to strengthen our resume and the opportunity to gain the attention of the committee with somewhat of a signature win amongst the dulldrums of the MAC schedule.

Instead, the selection show, the late in show quick  mention, the no highlights, the no TV game-- appeared as though we were a total afterthought.  All at a time when we thought we were actually doing something kind of special this year (best start in school history, etc..).  This only serves as a reality check that we are not on the bubble; we're not the last 8 out per Lunardi or #66 per Bilas--  we're not even on the map if those that pick the BB games have the mindset of those on the NCAA Committee.  I'm not even sure how/if this game is helpful to OHIO at all.  Appears it can only hurt.  We win and it certainly does very little (other than a little better RPI) to make our resume any better than it was if we would never had played it.  On the other hand, we lose and it hurts us much more than a Win would help us.  Once again no offense to UNC-A, it's just another no-name opponent for a team who was looking at the BB to give them a late season "name" game on TV.  This is a double whammy--no name/no TV.  As it turns out the BB which is supposed to give mid-majors a platform to state their case, gives us OHIO little to nothing.

The only thing this game can do is serve as a chip on the teams shoulder.  Realizing that 17-4 means nothing to people on these selection committee's and they either need to win-out and probably more realistically--be ready for Cleveland in March.

OHIO has never lost to UNC, I'm not worried about losing to one of their branch campuses.

Better match up- UNC- Ashville vs OU- Chillicothe

WRONG!

Clearly you don't know much about them.

Comparing to supposedly 'branch' campuses shows that you don't really know the facts.

I think he was just being facetious. I would guess most people on this board know that there is a big difference between OU- Chillicothe and UNC- Asheville.

Amen.  I'm ticked just like mostly everyone.  I hope this gives the team the motivation to show what they're made of and roll through the next month.  The dopes in this ESPNU committee, and the selection committee's have to take notice if the 'Cats finish the year with 26-28 wins.

Yeah - one is next to Great Seal State Park.  The other is next to Smoky Mountain National Park.

I realize this was a sarcastic mark, but just to clarify, UNC-Asheville is not a branch campus. It is one of 17 public state universities in North Carolina, just the same way UNC-Chapel Hill (the one most are familiar with) is.

As an Ohioan who went to UNCA appreciate you posting this.  While most of the country views UNC-Chapel Hill as "UNC" the reality is that (just like in cali) there are many different public universities and four Division One schools that have the "UNC" Name (Asheville, Wilmington, Greensboro, and Chapel Hill).

In no way does Asheville have the pedigree of Chapel Hill... But we do routinely play them and the last two years have played close/competitive games.  I doubt that OU-Chillicothe is hosting the bobcats anytime soon?  UNC-Chapel Hill played AT Asheville this year on ESPNU.

We are in no position to downplay any future opponent.  I was surprised by Groce's "They are who they are" dismissal of our Bracket Buster slot.  I hope we don't get embarrassed, but it's certainly possible.

Wow, talk about taking a quote out of context.  Here is what he said:

“I try to worry about things I can control,” Groce said. “They tell us who we’re playing and when it is and what station it’s on, and I can’t control that stuff.

“It is what it is. We got who we got. When the time comes we’ll prepare accordingly and try to put our guys in the best position to win the game.”

But Groce did say that he was disappointed that his team will not have the chance to play on national television.

“We clearly should have been on national television,” Groce said. “That’s the part I’m most disgusted about for our guys.”

Please help me put "It is what it is" in a positive context.  He was unhappy and made it clear in his statements that he was unhappy.  "It is what it is. We got who we got" is clearly a statement of disappointment.

That was his immediate, immediate response at the coach's radio show without having time to digest all the facts.  Methinks you're reading way too much into his comments.

I would think his disappointment is the same as most, that the game will not be on TV. To a lesser extent, he might have liked a higher-ranked team that could boost the Bobcats' standing, but I think the TV issue is the biggest disappointment for everyone.

Jeff:  Good thing "immediate" responses in a public forum don't get printed in the newspaper or broadcast over the internet to opponents!  Man, I must have missed that day in J-school.

I listened to the Coach's Show in real time and never got the impression that he was unhappy about the opponent. He was very complimentary of UNCA but was VERY disappointed about not getting a TV game.

That's the way I read it as well. It sounds like he was saying he's got more important things on his plate than worrying about the BB opponent right now. We play who we play and he'll worry about that when it's time to worry about that. I think some people are trying to read way too much into his comments.

Living here in asheville, super excited about this match up and the return game of course. Coach B was on local sports radio here this evening,

  •  Eddie was a bit dissapointed as UNCA was planning / in negotiations on coming to Athens next year so DJ Cunningham's family and friends could see him play. He then mentioned they might change the  7pm start time of the game, but he may have been mixing his thoughts.

  • Talked about how he met and became friends with Groce @ NC State since his kids went there while Groce was working under Herb Sendek.

  • Said it was a huge game for UNCA because a win could help them in the eyes of the selection committee to move from a play-in 16 seed to something a little better since Ohio has a way better RPI than UNCA.
