Offense looked really good. They had no answer for DW or Wiz. Those 2 were 13 for 14 and never went to the free throw line once. That's pretty incredible and a bit embarrassing for Stetson. I believe DW & WIz were in and out for each other all game and Boals never had them on the court together. I'd kind of like to see that at least a little bit in certain.
We all seem to agree, AJ Brown is really good. Dangerous outside shot and top tier driving ability. I am not sure we all understand how much of a scorer he could end up being. I think counting only conference games, AJB will end up a top 10 scorer in the conference. Is there anyone in the MAC who could challenge him for MAC freshman of the year? Also he is such a good teammate and leader out there. I'm every bit as excited about him as I was Sears & Preston.
I don't get the negativity on Clayton, I have really liked him the last 5-6 games and his approach. He's getting inside the arc and mixing it up in a way he didn't do at all last year. I am glad he seems to be trending away from the spot up shooter. If he can keep this rebounding up it'll be huge for us. Only 15 minutes was a little strange but every game has it's own unique flow.
We need to do a physics study on the ball flight of Ben Roderick's shots. For 2 years now we consistently see this weird in and out phenomena way too much. Does he have a unique spin to it that requires nothing but net for it to actually go down? It's bizarre.
It looks like Boals is settling on Hunter & Sheldon being a direct 1 for 1 pairing this season that will add up to 40 a game. I like the approach, I just hope Sheldon can handle big spots in tight conference games.
I agree Hadaway may be heading out of the rotation along with Adelodun. I wonder if EJ ends up out as well. Come conference play we may end up as simple as:
DW/Wiz - 40
Hunter/Sheldon - 40
Clayton/Roderick - 40
Brown/Brown/Baker - 80
Would love to get a solid road win at Delaware before a tuneup at home and head to conference play 8-5.
Really good post here. I'll take a stab at some of these thoughts. My frustration with Clayton is that there have been too many games in the first half where he has been an absolute no-show from a scoring standpoint. Take a look at our losses and take a look at Clayton's stats in the first half. It can't be pretty.
Boals had to cut the rotation down and Hadaway was the obvious first man out. I knew he was in trouble confidence wise moving forward after his two free throws against the Gators nearly broke the backboard. I love his energy, but he doesn't have to always feel like he's running downhill all the time on the court. His play reminds me sometimes of Jesse Spano's personality in the Saved By The Bell episode..."I'm so excited...I'm so excited." For the younger generation, head to YouTube and find it. Also, we can end any debate here. Kelly Kapowski will always be better than Jesse Spano. However, Spano gets bonus points for the movie Showgirls.
I hope James can stick in the rotation. I know he can help and brings a lot to the table with his strength. If somebody would be cut from the rotation in MAC play, I'm guessing he would be next. Sheldon stays because he's the only one behind Hunter to run point. He looks to be getting more confident so hopefully that continues.
Somebody mentioned this about Whiz and it's true. I don't care if the guy scores another point the rest of the season. His job is to rebound and not turn it over. Do that every night and I'm happy.
Brod...he's been better this year. And yes...0-7 against Stetson...but five of the shots were in and out. I think he's going to come through for a big win or two in MAC play.
I'm really not expecting a Delaware win on Wednesday. Going to be a brutally tough game. However, I like Baker off the bench and tightening up the rotation the rest of the season. Problem is we have a brutal 5 game stretch to start the MAC and 0-5 isn't out of the question.
Continue to grind.
