Through December of his Freshman season:

1st on the team in total FG%.

1st on the team in effective FG%, which is insane because he rarely shoots threes.

4th on the team in FT shooting % (I only counted those with more than a few attempts).

3rd on the team in total rebounds.

1st on the team in blocks (has more than Simmons and Breath combined).

Tied for 2nd in steals.

1st on the team in True Shooting percentage (measures all shooting combined, 2P/3P/FT).

PER (Player Efficiency Rating) of 15.2. Average is around 15 and I only expect this number to go up.

He does all of this while having one of the smallest usage rates on the team - currently 3rd from the bottom.

This doesn't even mention the little things I've noticed he does: rotates well on defense, actually moves without the ball on offense and makes efficient cuts to the basket, runs the floor, can basically guard any position if needed, good court vision. Obviously there have been expected Freshman mistakes with turnovers and fouls, but he'll be fine. This guy is gonna be a lock for the MAC Freshman team and in the running for FOTY.

100%. We need to use more possessions through Kelly.

This is a big challenge with Boals style and philosophy. No sets means that you can't engineer opportunities for guys, and a guy like Kelly loses possessions to guys like Hadaway, Sheldon and Simmons who are more confident using those possessions.

Hope Boals can find the cash to keep him for another year.

Also worth mentioning: Ohio is 6-3 in games that JJ has started, and two of those losses were St. Mary's and Louisville.

I believe I was the first to declare myself president of the JJ Kelly fan club, so you can't have it. Hopefully it ends up better than my previous reigns as fan club President of Tony Campbell & Jason Carter.

Not mentioned is his tremendous attitude and clear passion for the game. Very coachable and a great supportive teammate. Hope he really loves Athens and the coaching staff!

Being a superb athlete is half the battle and JJ has that part one right off the bat and the other half, the 110% effort...he's doing that too.

Glad to see other posters warming up to the "athletic" part of D-1 basketball players. There was a time on here long ago when people scoffed at athleticism for basketball. They said "athletes are for track and field" not hoops.
