Former Bobcat Sam Towns had 12 pt and 18 reb for BG today. I believe he was recruited to Ohio by Larry Hunter. Or was it Billy Hahn? I heard his goal is to remain in college longer than his cousin Seth Towns, whose career started at Harvard in the 2016-17 season and ended in 2023-24 at Howard with a stop in between at osu. Reason #184 why college sports is not what it used to be.
Sam is certainly consistent in behavior. Remains a punk.

EMU…22 point dog…whips Cincinnati tonight. I wonder what its NIL budget is?

There is a strong case on 11-26-2025 that Ohio is the worst team in the MAC. It’s a battle between Ohio, Ball State and WMU.

One of our posters has been keeping track on how Ohio has fared under Boals against Kent, Akron and UT. My concern, from early MAC returns, is how this team is going to do against EMU and UB and Miami as well as the other top 3 MAC schools.

EMU just took down UC quite convincingly. Miami, albeit v. an unimpressive schedule, and UB remain undefeated following wins today. And it's possible that BG is passing us by as well.

That would be me.
Boals record in six seasons against Toledo, Akron and Kent is a combined 12-26.

Watched the 2nd half of EMU/UC and all I could think about was how terrible we are.

EMU hit shots (even 3PT shots!) against good defense and had UC rattled at home. They withstood a Bearcat run which cut the lead to one point. They looked composed and played a complete game on the defensive side. Holding UC to 56 pts at home!? Wow.

Towns finishes with 27 pts and 8 rbs. Second straight MAC win on the road v. Big12, following EMU win at UC.

KSU with two former MAC players, including last year's MAC POY Nate Johnson from Akron. The other is Marcus Johnson, played at BG last year following 2 years at Wheeling University. NJ starts and MJ hadn't played yet this year until getting 2 minutes tonight.

These wins against the B12/16 don’t bode well for Ohio’s chances to make it far in Cleveland, or maybe even to make it there.

Man, real nice win by BG over Kansas State! Towns ripped K-State all game long. BG had to feel great after that one, especially seeing their leading scorer from last year sitting on KSU’s bench after handing them a beatdown like that on their home court. Plus K-State had to cough up a nice paycheck for BG as well. Real nice win by BG! One of the better ones by a MAC team in the last few years too. The MAC doesn’t get many of these anymore in the regular season nowadays. BG is certainly looking the part of a team to keep an eye on in the MAC this year.

Towns is looking like the one that got away who shouldn’t have.

BG continues to do well recruiting the lower level transfers. Javonte Campbell (JUCO), Josiah Shackelford (Flagler), and Troy Glover II (Missouri-St Louis/Trinity IL) are all among its top 6 rotational players.

Campbell leads BG (17ppg) in scoring after being a Top 100 JUCO prospect 2 seasons ago.

Shackelford is averaging 13ppg after being freshman of the year in the Peach Belt Conference at Flagler.

Glover (6’10) is averaging 6ppg, 4rpg, and 1.3bpg after being Great Lakes Valley DPOY at Missouri-St. Louis.

I imagine this group didn’t break the NIL piggy bank and cost less than Simmons alone. Just impressive recruiting and talent identification.

Wasn't Towns kind of a head case when he was here. Is my memory correct on that?

The big dude for BG last year Marcus Johnson transferred to Kansas State. Barely played and lost. Not a good night for him.

As mentioned in a post above from last night. His 2 minutes last night were his first game action this season.

I'm not sure. I think he may have gotten disgruntled with his playing time or lack thereof.

I'd say this is embarrassing for him but he's earning an honest living and probably makes more than I will this year.

Simon has done a really nice job bringing in lower-level talent ready to compete at the D-I level at BG. As for BG's transfers lost, think about this. Marcus Johnson was BG's leading scorer last year and is now at Kansas State as mentioned. But keep in mind, the two big transfers they lost the year before are now both starting at Texas A&M in Marcus Hill and Rashaun Agee. Those two were huge losses for BG and would have been a pair of 1st Team All-MAC guys last year had they stayed (Hill already was a 1st Team All-MAC selection, Agee was a 2nd Team All-MAC pick while there, and they each had two years eligibility left).

For those of you who watch a lot of college basketball and not just Ohio:

Does it seem like other teams you see on TV have players that you're confident have a good chance of making their 3-pt attempts when you don't feel that way when an Ohio player lets fly? For example: Butler with a 41-36 lead at the half against EMU (TruTV) with Butler hitting 8 of 11 attempts from 3 while EMU is 6 of 7.

This compared to Ohio making 27% as a team on the year.

Amazing turnaround by Towns.

I casually followed the box scores of BG games over the past two seasons and if he got minutes it wasn't many and his production seemed minimal.

YES. There are certain quality open shots in basketball you supremely confident are falling. It has been a long time since Ohio has had a guy that made me feel that way. I long for a Freeman/Kellogg/Dartis type.

It's gotten to the point where I'm not too confident when certain Bobcats go to the free throw line.

And speaking of Freeman, he'll be in the house tonight.

How is Towns playing his 6th season of College Ball, even allowing for a Covid year?

Both Marcuses were lower level transfers as well. Hill was JUCO and Johnson was JUCO/D2 (Wheeling).

It’s always going to be a wash how these guys translate to P5.

Since 23/24 (Simon’s first season), he’s brought in Hill (20.5ppg), Johnson (16.2ppg), Campbell (15.4ppg between this season and last), Shackelford (13ppg), and Glover II (6.1ppg) from lower levels.

In that same span, our transfers have been Reef, Cornish, Searls, Pavs, Simmons, Breath, and Connors. If we were to factor in Wiz and Baker from 22/23, that gives us 8 D1 transfers excluding Searls.

Outside of Simmons, Pavs, Reef, and Breath, I’d swap the rest of that group with BG’s. Hill and Campbell are both slightly bigger than Pavs/Reef, so I wouldn’t rule that tradeoff out entirely.

I couldn’t find a tie into JUCO/D2 on BG’s staff. We can probably do ourselves a favor by not always defaulting to guys with connections to the program/state of Ohio and instead further recruit all levels out of the portal. Wiz was a Hargrave guy, Reef knew Jaylin, and Searls dad knows Boals from their time together. Hell, Simmons and Connors are from Columbus. Simmons is the only must have out of this bunch imo.

Boals (37-35) and Simon (40-34) have almost identical overall records since the latter took over BG. Boals has the advantage in MAC play (23-13) in comparison to Simon (18-18) but it’s possible this is BG’s breakout year under Simon.

He got a medical for last year with a season ending injury in the 6th game of the season.
