Big game in the MAC tomorrow with UB taking on Kent State. Ohio is currently 2 GB of UB and 1 GB of Kent State. Who do you guys want to lose more?

Personally, I want Kent State to lose, just so OU can get back to solidifying ourselves in the top four. The chances of us getting a top 2 seed has slimmed dramatically with the last two losses. I just want to focus on OU getting a bye into the quarterfinals of the MAC Tourney right now, so lets get that top 4 seed.

Above, is a link to an article I wrote that basically states the importance of the second run through the MAC East portion of the schedule. The article is about UB but applies to almost any team in the MAC East. Hope you enjoy

Ohio has to go 5-0 there is no bye for us if we don't.  Akron won't lose more than 3 so we can't catch them. Akron has to take care of UB, Kent St, and BGSU.   Those things happen we get the 2 seed and the semi final bye and order in the universe is restored.  Kent State over UB would perhaps give us margin for error should be lose at home to Akron.  The key is sweeping Kent St and UB and winning the tie breakers. My hope is Akron has their hickup vs Ohio and becomes Ohio best friend against UB and Kent State.  If we can't beat BGSU, UB and Kent St and Miami we don't deserve a bye.  We have some bad losses, but have 5 games left to undue the damage.

4-1 easily gets us a bye.  It would be nearly impossible for us not to get a bye with an 11-5 conference record. 5-0 probably would get us the double bye.

Win out and there's a chance for the triple bye that Akron will probably be getting.

Kent takes down UB, both at 9-3 now.
AND CMU beats EMU???

Beat BGSU and we are one game back of 2nd, and clearly in the top 4

If we go 3 and 2 a 10 and 6 record might get 4th seed.  4 and 1 will definitely get that.  The difference between 4th place and 5th place is HUGE - a double bye versus having to win 5 games in 6 days.  That just isn't going to happen for anyone.

What makes me nervous is timing of peak performance. By that I mean that Kent is playing their best basketball of the season right now against the better MAC teams; Akron's really playing well right now too. We on the other peaked in December and have been on a downward slide ever since, the big win at home against Kent notwithstanding. I hope the season's long enough that we can get our mojo back.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out for the teams that get the double bye.  There is a school of thought that byes hurt teams early but are huge benefits the deeper a team goes. I've never done any research to see if this is true but I've heard several talking heads mention it.

I actually think a bye hurts us this year. We're not playing very well and then we get some time off to play against a team that maybe is  starting to roll. I'd rather be in the other position at this point.

If we're one of the two teams that gets a double bye (3 and 4 seed), we will be playing on Thursday night against a team that is playing it's third game in four days.  I like the odds in that situation.

I thought the way it worked is the double bye teams play the winner of a team that had a bye to the previous round and a team that would have played four games. So the double bye teams probably will be playing a team that has only played one game.

Right now as it stands we are in 5th place which means that our road would look like this:

Monday - 12 seed @Ohio
Wednesday - Winner 8&9 vs Ohio In Cleveland
Thursday -  Ohio vs #4 seed (BG)
Friday - Ohio vs #1 seed (Akron)
Saturday - Ohio vs ?

If you look at the bracket the 3/4 seeds get a double bye (play 3 games instead of 5), and the 1/2 seeds get a triple bye (play 2 games, instead of 5)

Didn't UConn do something like this last year in the Big East Tourney?

Someone have the odds of OHIO playing 4-5 "good" MAC games in a row in March (or Jan or Feb)?
