If Akron won out and then lost to us in the tournament, could they get an at-large?

Currently sitting at 61 in RealTimeRPI with a game against RPI 45 Oral Roberts on Saturday...

The scenario painted above would imply a 25-8 record on selection Sunday, I think?

Joe Lunardi currently puts Akron just in front of Minnesota, N.C. State, Cinncinnati and Miami, his last four in. Akron's RPI will rise if they win out. I think the Zips probably would be able to lose once more before the MAC tournament and still have an at-large shot. Of course, that will be affected by by how many at-large spots are eliminated by unlikely tournament winners. Some of their non-conference losses will hurt, but they were missing guys and the tournament people usually do take that into consideration to some extent.

This is something that really fries me because teams like OUr guys, Kent, Buffalo, and Akron could run up against a lot of teams in these freakin' power conferences and beat them 50/50 on a neutral floor, and more than that on the home floor.  We just happen to get screwed because half of them won't consider traveling on the road to these places.  The NCAA should require 1 for 1 games, or at least 1 for 2.  Akron could host schools being considered right now (Minnesota, UC, etc as mentioned) in the JAR and beat them.  I wish they'd make a stipulation in the selection process that, again requires any at large team to have a winning record in their own conference.  We are, afterall, supposedly watching the best 68 teams come March, right?  If a team can't have a winning record in it's own conference, why should it be considered one of the best 68?

I think even if they win all the remainder of their games and through the tournament until the finals and loose they won't get the at large bid. It's all about the weakness of the league and their OOS schedule.

You say they have no shot, Joe Lunardi says they do. I think I'll side with Lunardi.

If Akron runs the table and loses in the MAC Championship Game, it is highly likely that they will get an at-large.  However,  a lot depends on how conference tournaments shake out with the last handful of at-large bids.

While they do have some impressive non-conference wins, they also had a couple of non-conference clunkers.

I think it's a moot point because I don't see anyone in the MAC beating them in the MAC tourney; I hope I'm wrong but they have to be the odds on favorite to win it all at this point.

Akron has not lost to any team outside the RPI top 100. Worst loss according to the RPI was at Valparaiso (#93). Almost every other bubble team will have a few worse losses.

The NCAA couldn't give a rat's arse what conference teams are from. The MAC hasn't gotten any recent at large's because they haven"t deserved any at larges.  There have been certain teams that could have earned an at large but they won the automatic bid.   I'm going on record to say that if Akron runs the table and loses in the MAC title game they will easily get an automatic bid. That would mean that they would have 7 games left with 6 of those coming against top 100 RPI teams.  They will have just completed an 18-1 stretch with 9 of those victories coming against teams in the top 100.  They will have played 17 teams in the top 100 overall.  Is their resume right now at large worthy? No, but if they run the table it will be.

That being said I don't think they run the table.

I have to imagine it would be a lot; he's an Akron, OH guy, being born there, etc. Plus Akron gave him his first D1 head coaching job after his "tenure" at Central Michigan (not including his head coaching job at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School), so I'm sure he feels a tremendous sense of loyalty to Akron. I'm not saying he'd never leave there, but I think it would have to be a major step up, not to a major midlevel school like Butler, the MWC schools, that sort of thing. He loves the Akron area and I don't see him leaving for the first job offered him.

I don't think they should have to run the table.  Wouldn't most people rather see two MAC teams (or CAA, or MVC...) than 8-9 teams from the Big Ten+2, or Big East?  I'm even a big UC fan, and I'd rather see (gulp, I'm saying this) Akron in than UC, assuming UC is 9-9 in the Big East.  Same would apply to Minnesota, Illinois, Seton Hall, Miami FL, Clemson, UConn, Ole Miss, and on and on.  While I do care about the "who have you beaten" adage, I also don't feel that who you've beaten matters as much if a team hasn't managed a winning record within it's own conference.

He would seem to fit better with the Illinois thread that coach Groce would at this point.

I heard Dambrot in a radio interview a few weeks ago.  He said he only wants to coach 7 more years.  He's 53 now.
