Those words were mentioned more than once last night, as both Akron and Ohio have 2-0 records against their opponents this evening.  That's a common axiom in sports as well.  But I wanted to see how accurate it was, at least pertaining to the MAC tournament.

Going back to Ohio's thrilling tournament win over Buffalo in 2005, eleven times teams have met in Cleveland where one team has come in with a 2-0 record over the opponent.  Overall, in those eleven meetings, the 2-0 team is 8-3 in those match-ups.  That doesn't seem as though it's hard to beat a good team three times to me.  Seems as though that's just something people have said so many times, everyone starts believing it.

Here were the match-ups:
2010:
2-0 Kent State lost to OHIO
2-0 Akron lost to OHIO

2009:
2-0 BGSU beat OHIO

2008:
2-0 Kent State beat Miami
2-0 Kent State beat Akron

2007:
2-0 Toledo beat EMU
2-0 Akron beat Kent State

2006:
2-0 Kent State beat Buffalo
2-0 Miami lost to OHIO
2-0 Kent State beat OHIO

2005:
2-0 OHIO beat Buffalo

So let me recap to see if I have this right.

Number of times beating a team in Cleveland after having lost to them twice during the season:

Ohio: 3
Everyone else in the MAC: 0

Wow. That's interesting. I guess it's true that it is hard to beat a good team three times. It just so happens we're the only good team in the MAC.

Highlight the 2005 matchup and the 2007 Akron-KSU matchup.  They're the same pairings as tonight's.

It is hard to beat good teams three times.  But it's not harder the third time than it is the first two.

Gawd,

I wish had a dime for everytime this happens.

_he is one dimensional

-we just can't shoot

we cant play defense.

there are so many things here and on most boards that are propogated and become a "truth" because they grew legs and ran.

I think there is a pretty good chance we kill them again. I like what whomever has had the scout has done with Buffalo this year. I think our guard play has done the job and the bigs have taken away the blocked shots and rebounding advantage ....the real impressive thing is the taking away of the slips, backcuts and weak side penetration that Buffalo has done to us the past few years and so many others even this year. The other thing we have done is get the big over the top not to leave the hedge too early and get burned on a wide open 3. For the most part we have also avoided getting Ivo isolated on the guard because of a mis executed hedge and resulting in the switch up top where he has been taken to school the last couple of years.

Noticed last night the ever present inability of our guys to close out and actually challenge the shooting hand resulting in long 3's with only token resistance. Gotta limit that and we are golden,. 3 times would be sweet.

We defend like we did last night, and shoot just a little better in the first half, we win.

The funny thing is that they were able to do that in about the first three possessions when we played at Buffalo this year and then we woke up and took it away.  We've also made Filson a liability for them by being able to handle them down low and keeping a guy near him.  If he isn't scoring, or at least a threat he's a minus for them.

Thanks, Born! I felt much better about this game after reading your analysis.

Any good thoughts concerning Akron?

Ding-ding-ding ... buy this man a chicken dinner, darn it! To you, OUVan, goes the Confucius Award for March 2012 (so far, at least).
