Ohio loses at CMU, 69-66. Caitlyn Kroll had a good look at a tying three at the end, but it rolled around and around the rim - and out. No Bobcat other than Felder scored in double digits. Felder had quite a performance - 12-24 shooting with 3-10 from three and 13-14 on free throws. The rest of the Bobcats shot 8 for 32 for the game, 4-21 from three.

Ohio has improved in a lot of ways since the beginning of the year, but shooting is not one of them. They really needed to win this one, as CMU was also 1-5 in the MAC coming in. CMU has a couple of freshmen that can really score, together with a 6'5" transfer from Virginia Tech who also played well.

Ohio is again down to 8 players, as Ella Pope did not play in this one.

I heard yesterday that Arizona St. women's basketball had to forfeit games because they didn't have the required 7 scholarship players available. Not sure if that's a PAC 10 rule or NCAA.

I can't say this for certain but I think we also lost the game Cece scored 40+. Anyone here know that for sure to confirm?

Never knew that failure to meet scholarship requirements would result in forfeiting games. Seems very weird to me. Perhaps, this only applies to games played in the Republic of California. They like to write their own rules.

Perhaps I didn't hear it right. Maybe they had to cancel their games, not forfeit.

Either way, it's a good thing it's not the state of Texas of Florida we're talking about. Hate to think what draconian rules they've come up with.

Getting us back on track from unsolicited political opinions, it's a Pac 12 minimum:

https://pac-12.com/article/2021/12/22/pac-12-announces-ad...

A conference that plays in the glorious states of Florida and Texas, the SEC, has a similar rule:

https://www.secsports.com/article/32929291/updated-interr... .

The SEC does have this blurb regarding having under 7 scholarship players:

"The impacted institution has the option to play the game with fewer than the seven players and/or one countable coach, if it elects to do so. Otherwise, upon approval by the Commissioner, the game will be rescheduled or declared a no contest."

I couldn't quickly/easily find a MAC policy on scholarship minimums for hoops.

Reporting on the Sun Devils games says that the games against Utah and Colorado scheduled for January 13 and 15 were forfeited due to a Pac-10 policy requiring forfeits (not no-contests) if a team cannot field 7 scholarship players.

At least as of last season, the MAC policy was different. Ohio had fewer than 7 scholarship players available for a scheduled game against Ball State on February 9, and the game was declared a no-contest (not a forfeit). The Ohio press release announcing the initial postponement of the game said that the MAC had recently modified its 2021-22 rescheduling policy to declare a no contest when a team had fewer than 7 scholarship players available if the game could not be rescheduled.

The no-contest versus Ball State had major repercussions when seeds for the MAC tournament were announced. Kent State finished with a 10-10 record, and Ohio finished at 9-10. The MAC nevertheless awarded Ohio the 8th and final tournament seed, and seeded Kent State 9th, which kept them out of the tourney.

Ohio's on-line "History and Records" book has not been updated since the 2020-2021 season, and so still shows Caroline Mast, and not Cece Hooks, as the program's career scoring leader. But to the extent the book is accurate about the single game scoring record, it says the top three (before last night, of course) are Cece and Marlene Stollings with 41 points, and Kiyanna Black with 39.

The boxscore of the game against Akron on 2-22-2020 shows Cece scored 41 points on 17-26 shooting, 3-5 from three, and 4-8 from the free throw line. Ohio lost 79-76. I don't have the boxscore of Stollings' game, but it looks like her 41 came in a 100-88 loss to Robert Morris on 12-30-1997. Only Kiyanna Black's 39 came in a win, 86-84 vs. CMU in overtime on 1-16-2016. She was 12-24, 5-13 from three, 10-10 from the line.

THAT makes sense. The originally posted statement didn’t.
