I would expect that Boals might find it easier to get some P6 games next year. Our Roster doesn't look nearly as strong.

A chance to catch some teams off-guard

It's still very early. Give the portal a month or two and there's a good chance P6 runs away scared again

Ohio finished last year with a NET ranking of 119 and KenPom ranking of 134. We might've had a strong roster when we originally tried to schedule teams last year but that wasn't the case once we lost Preston and DW3.

Main reason it could be easier this offseason would be the weaker perception of our roster from the outside but I'm not sure that'll line up with reality.

The main difference this year is that there's a lot of uncertainty and unknowns on our roster. That said, with DW3 possibly back and Boals hitting the transfer portal, I think it's way too early to doubt this squad. I still expect Ohio to be in the top half of the MAC and if they add a solid point guard, I could see them competing near the top of the conference.

Dwight is back + an influx of athleticism and length. To your point it’s really just unknown how it all comes together, who the PG is, and any additional portal adds (if at all) are. Boals isn’t punting this year, if he was I imagine Dwight would have left as well.

All said, even if we can’t land a few P6 games, I wouldn’t hate more games against Belmont equivalents/other top mid-majors. Maybe it’s too soon, but what about scheduling Butler with Matta-Boals relationship?

I wish we had a like button because I agree with everything above.

If it were to happen, a game at Hinkle vs Butler would be a must on the Bobcat bucket list.

+1

Would love to see us have those kind of games every year at a regional school versus going to LSU or Oklahoma or wherever. Give me regional road trip games that are good venues and would do that anyday of the week

Listened to Boals on the final caravan podcast. Schedule sounds less optimistic as we go. New games that I heard included Detroit and Youngstown State. He said he had 5-6 more games to get and that one team was scheduled back out. Still saying that nobody wants to play Ohio. Makes no sense with 9 new players on the team and no Sears/BVP.

Talked about Spain trip which is good. They will get 10 days of full practices in between July 10-24.

No mention of any November/December destination tournament.

Woof. Seems odd that nobody wants to play us, to your point — we have so many new players. We don’t even have an identity, yet. I’ve seen a lot more games surface for other MAC schools and there seems to be no problem scheduling games against other quality mid majors at the least. We really can’t land opponents of that caliber and have to settle for the Alabama State’s/Stetson’s of the world?

I really don't get it and I'm with ya. Scheduling to me is the worst part about being an Ohio Bobcat basketball fan. Tired of the same rhetoric year in and year out that nobody wants to play Ohio.

From the sound of it Boals wanted a P5 to arrive in Athens and that is why he was turned down across the board.

Another of my "easier said than done" observations, but Ohio State, Cincinnati, Xavier, Dayton, West Virginia, Pitt should all be on the schedule rotation.

I dont mind traveling to LSU/UK all these random measuring sticks, but I'd like to see us develop an "Ohio Rivalry" with some large in-state programs.

I suppose thats more a hurdle for them to get over what they gain/lose than it is for OU.

I agree with this, but don’t you find it odd none of these schools would at least host us? I’d add other quality mid-majors in the region like NKU, Murray State, Chattanooga, etc. should be in the mix as well. Sure beats our current alternatives, even without the P5 games.

Always thought it was odd, but what does Ohio State gain from losing to OU at home? I suppose even more so for UD, Xavier which competes for recruits.

Ohio only wants to play UD 1 for 1. Had a 1 for 1 on the books but the students weren't in session for Ohio so it was deemed no point. The scheduling challenge is getting programs to play in Athens. Instead settle for Stetson and Alabama St at home and rack up the wins. Growing the program beyond a Top MAC that wins in March to an at-large entrant is too tough in this day and age.

UD, Xavier, UC, and OSU are unlikely to come to Athens, sure. However and I don’t mean to beat a dead horse, but I find it hard to believe we can’t get home and homes with other quality mid majors. There’s more to gain for both than to lose.

Maybe a 2-and-1...? :)

The problem is I think a lot of these are in the works for years, and mid-major quality turns over about as often.

Certainly there are other factors at play, but I'm hopeful of a Butler-OU series now that Thad Matta is back.

That latter would be awesome, hoping for that as well. Even if it’s only us at Hinkle. Not sure how far in advance all games are scheduled. Regardless, ours is looking bleak in comparison to the rest of the MAC so far.

As soon as I say the above, we get Florida in Tampa.

That's two trips to Florida in as many years. Dwight and AJ Brown get a little bit of a homecoming. We have offers out to a few Florida prospects including AJ's brother. Winnable P5 game. Great addition.

Tremendous addition and very good for the Florida prospects. Now let's get at least 2-3 high quality mid-majors on the schedule.

Rocco Miller reiterates on Twitter that we are hosting an MTE with Eastern Illinois and Alabama State between Nov 24-26. The tone of his tweet suggests that there won't be a fourth team.
