While this piece touches on a lot of things, I think it leaves out some of the most important.

Economy in a tailspin, and this kind of splurge event is one of the first things to go for many people.  Ticket prices have not adjusted downward to accommodate that, thus, lower attendance.  I would expect attendance to strengthen with the economy (ie: slowly), probably lagging a bit.

I'd like to see numbers for the other major sports (NFL - though not as likely to be affected, MLB, NBA, NHL, NASCAR) and how they compare.  I'd guess you'll see a similar story.

Well, we beat Stanford in the last meeting (1992), so you can only assume that people, when given a choice, will go to the Convo.

We'll probably see the opposite.  Can't you hear it?  "Ticket prices need to be increased to make up for losses in revenue."  Bizarro economics.

Back in the 1990s me and a group of guys attended the NCAA first round 9 years in a row.  And not glamorous places either.  Cincinnati, Dayton, Providence, Charlotte, Lexington, Minneapolis, etc.

The first round is a blast.  We gave up after ticket prices got to be too high.

I looked into the Sweet 16 over in Boston, since it falls on my day off and that's an easy day trip, and Tricia is going to be in town.  $188 each to sit back against the wall behind the baseline seems a bit much.  If it is sold out, it's the right price, but if it isn't..

2 years ago when the first round was in buffalo it was (iirc) $80 for the cheapest tickets for a FIRST ROUND session (2 games).

Sweet Sixteen ticket only $188.  I know that's not exactly cheap.  But I'm surprised that it's not more given the demand vs. the limited # of seats.
