Wow when you said espn love i thought we would have a small mention in an article, but for him to say we could make a deep run? thats awesome. Obviously it means nothing, but i do like hearing the John Groce said this is his best team at Ohio. Go Cats!

Wow, haven't heard too many analysts even predicting us to win the Mac, let alone make a deep tourney run.  Would love to hear his basis for that opinion besides repeating a quote from Groce.

Love this and I'll take it, but....

We never seem to do well when hyped in the preseason.  Let them kick picking us in the middle of the pack and history tells us we'll do better.

Plus, Fran is probably going 99% from what appears to have been a great conversation with John.  No way he knows, or is keeping track of the guys on our roster.  All of us realize we're just names on a peice of paper right now and nobody really knows who/what all these new guys on the roster are all about. 

All I know is that we weren't real good last year and lost 2 key guys (DW & Tommy) from that not-so-great team.  I'm familiar with all the new names but have no clue what this team will look like until 10 games in the season.

With Cooper, Kellogg, Taylor, Offut, Hall and Johnson we got  six pretty good players in the three guards spots.
at power forward we got Baltic, Smith, Gourd behind him and at center we got Keely, Jacobs and Belton. 

If Kellogg becomes the player I hope he can be in year two after a strong freshmen season with Cooper that is gonna be one of the better backcourt in the MAC.  I think Offutt, Hall and Johnson make the 3 spot a solid position especially at the defensive end of the floor.  Baltic and Smith very athletic at the 4 and we now got 3 big bangers at the 5 to police the paint.

Only gonna say this once and I sincerely hope it becomes a reality.

THere is only one ball on the court at a time.  Them boys get that figured out they have the potential to be dangerous. Till then......

Sums it up nicely.  If we can share the rock unselfishly, there is tons of potential.  Can't wait for basketball already!

The horse may be dead, but the question is valid. Many have said we need some winnable games beacuse we are "growing". Now we hear, straight from the horse's mouth, that it's his best team. Maybe you think that Frannie's comment about us potentially going deep into the tournament actually means something, and we should all celebrate, even before the first practice. I'm more curious about Groce actually saying that it's his best team. Did he really say that?

"Groce's best team" means third place in the East. That's all it takes. I don't know about you, but I don't think this team is anywhere near ready to tackle a difficult schedule. If we have a good season, then yes, let's pursue it next year. But this was a mediocre team last season.

I'll point to the volleyball program, which didn't schedule up until they were a top 40 program.

I'm more than comfortable with our set of guards. If just one post player besides Baltic can consistently bring some offensive game and rebounding, I think we'll be fine.

Deep tourney run is hard for me to believe. I think Kent is the class of the MAC going into this season. Us, Miami, Akron, and Buffalo seem to have an equal amount of talent returning, but it starts with Kent.

You mean like when he says to his teamies...."I got mines, y'all gotta step up you game and get yours" .....nice thought but the ball has to move son.  I remember living in Chic ago and sitting with my father in law who had Bulls season tix since 1974. Suffering through MJ putting up scads of points while teams like Detroit still owned them. MJ kept talking about the contributions he was making, then allof a sudden it became clear to him what it took to win.....A TEAM! You can go back and pull the Sun times and Trib articles and read the quotes about how he realized ho wimportant it was to help and facilitate other getting theirs first then getting his. Voila, Cavs, Pistons et al bit the big one and the Dynasty began.

I have always wondered with MJ being so vocal about that why it still takes players so many years to figure it out and why so many coaches fail to mentor that aspect of the game. The quotes are there and the knowledge is there. YOu can be freaking awesome and at the top of everyones all star list shattering records but you still aint a winner till you get it figured out. Ask MJ.

I don't like this talk about needing to figure out how to share the ball.  Nothing annoys me more than a team that doesn't adequately move the ball around.  Gotta make that extra pass and create the open looks.  If we start jacking up ill advised shots, it will be a long year.

Three brief points:

1.  JSF, I call that "generational amnesia."  It's a concept I've wrestled with a lot in recent years.

2.  Great thought, borna.  Distributing the ball and playing team ball can make a mediocre team a good team, and a good team a great team.

3.  Given this prediction of a "deep run" in the NCAA tourney, is it time to start the annual thread on when JG will be leaving for greener pastures?

While Jordan would say that, the basketbal "industry" (from media to coaching at all levels to college to NBA) does not focus on it at all.  And didn't when Jordan played either.

All kids see now is Kobe, Melo, Lebron, and Durant dunking and shooting, and "getting theirs".  They are not sticking around for the post game analysis regarding how any of these guys got their teamates involved and how the win was actually earned.  They just pay attention to who has the rock in their hand in the last 2 minutes of the game and know that's how you get paid.  They can focus on getting teamates involved after they've made their millions.
