Don't look now but by my calculations Ohio is one of just 7 schools that has won a bowl game and an NCAA Tournament game this season, those teams being:

OHIO
Purdue
North Carolina State
Baylor
Florida State
Florida
Cincinnati

I for one am enjoying this while it lasts-my goal this weekend is to at one time or another proudly wear every single bit of Ohio apparel I own.

Happy OHIO Day! (or as some might refer to it, St. Patrick's Day)

Last night on one of the ESPN shows, the host (maybe Reece Davis?) said that tomorrow night's game between Ohio and USF sounded more like a matchup for the Motor City Bowl.  It got a laugh from the two basketball analysts sitting next to him.  But even though he meant it as a joke, I think it's a real compliment to the way Ohio's football program has progressed.  Just three or four years ago, "bowl" and "Ohio" would not have been used in the same breath.  Now there's such an automatic connection that even basketball people recognize it.  These truly are great days to be a Bobcat.

Excellent post Mark, we are truly entering a golden phase which could elevate us far ahead of most others in the MAC, even though we are one one of the conference's smallest schools. We all can recall depressing past OU sports memories. For those like me who graduated in the 80s, there are painful football memories of being able to single-handedly count all of the fans in the stands after halftime. In addition, I believe it might have been the 1986 season when we won our only game of the season (the last home game against Northern Illinois) and there wasn't enough of us in Peden Stadium to tear down the goalpost.

Those who graduated a few years later probably remember having two future NBA players on the bobcat basketball roster and somehow we finished in the bottom of the MAC. I prefer to focus on our bright future, but for those of us who remember sitting through some painful past chapters, it makes this ascendancy all the more sweeter!

i am thrilled - THRILLED - with the success of football, men's basketball and women's volleyball.  Don't wanna sound greedy, but it would really be sweet if baseball and women's basketball could follow suit.

As long as Ohio doesn't promote within and gets a talented, up and coming baseball coach outside the current staff, you will see a change. All the ingredients are there.

All this winning is creating a lot of huge Bobcat fans out of current students.

Agreed Optimist.  I've always been a huge Bobcat sports fan, and made many Bobcat sports fans out of friends though they were initially hesitant to go to games at first.  I remember the first football game I went to as an actual student.  It was move in weekend in '03,  and I got suffer through the 35-0 debacle that was Northeastern (I-AA school that no longer has a football program).  Basketball was pretty rough as well that year.  It was never going to shake my fandom, but certainly it wasn't going to create any new fans or turn casual ones into big time supporters.

Think about it.  This years junior class at Ohio has watched the basketball team go to the NCAA tourney twice, knock off Georgetown and Michigan (with more to come), set a school record for wins, and returns its entire team next season.  They've seen the football team go to two MAC Championship games (should have been three), three consecutive bowl games, including the first ever bowl win in school history, and set a school record for wins.

I just hope the athletic department and the school in general truly recognizes what's going on.  Now is when Ohio needs to capitalize on building it's fan base, because the kind of success we're experiencing in football and basketball hasn't been seen in Athens for a long time.
