I am as optimistic as anyone on the board. HOWEVER, it is ok to be a realist and try to disect +/-. How to improve. To make sure we aren't in the bottom 3rd. next year
This hits home to me. It sucks that we are losing. I hate the fact that we’ve blown the opportunity to make us into a powerful mid major after the Virginia win and producing an NBA draft pick. I hate the feeling like we don’t have a legitimate chance to beat Akron / Kent /Toledo - many times losing in blow out fashion or fighting back from 20 point deficits to lose by 6. Those teams have found the way to pass us with having more athletes on the floor. Enrique Freeman fouled out two Ohio players on his own. Think about how ridiculous that statement is?
This might be minor, but it shouldn’t. Ohio has no media covering the team that could provide insight into them and thought on Boals approaches. Boals never, ever has to answer a difficult question about his team.
Here we are approaching February 1st and just trying to qualify for the MAC tourney is in question. Are we headed towards being Ball State and being mediocre? I get not everyone cares as much as others. But anyone has the right to be critical of this program with an analytical eye and ask why is this program where it is today in relation to the big three of the conference right now?
+1 to both. I appreciate Fear’s take because I feel the same way and really care about the program. Win’s like Virginia tend to catapult programs forward. E.g — Georgetown upset eventually led to adds like Walt, Jon Smith, and ultimately a roster that nearly made the Elite 8 two years following before a coaching change.
Outside of Groce, neither Todd K or Senderoff have tourney wins to point to. However, our current talent doesn’t match Kent, Toledo, or Akron. I’m a huge fan of Boals and Lamar. They’ve proven they can land the caliber players to win (Sears, Dwight, AJB, EJ4); but we need more of those types and I’m not sure how that gets improved on a more macro level.
Cellis’ thread about Boals’ recruiting was pretty eye opening and those cracks are starting to show this season. It’s going to be a big off-season for the program. Maintaining the right players, moving on from some, and bringing in a much needed influx of talent and athleticism.
