I see Granger as a great low level D1/Upper level D2 Center prospect. Hope he finds a good opportunity - Loved his enthusiasm. Also opens up a scholly for Boals recruiting.

It also opens a spot for BVP's possible return.

You're probably right. His other D1 offers besides Ohio came from Mount St. Mary's and Sienna. It's rather surprising that he didn't get offers from any D1 schools near his home in Georgia, even smaller schools, considering he was a top 27 player in the state and a top 3 center. He visited UGA and Clemson but no offers came from them.

Granger came here because his father grew up in Ohio. Outside of visiting relatives, not sure Colin had much Midwest experience. It will be interesting to see if anything opens up close to Georgia for him. Too bad, I liked the kid, but there didn't seem to be a spot (with playing time) for him here.

While I'm bummed to heard Granger is in the portal, I had a feeling this would probably happen. Man, eating my words saying he would replace Wilson.

You might be right but these guys may be keeping their options open waiting to see who their new coach is.

Could they have done that without entering the portal?

They run the risk of missing out on openings at other schools. If Ball waits until late April to name a coach these guys could miss out on a potential fit.

On the other hand they may all just be thinking "Screw Ball State"

I hear what you are saying, but I guess in my head if they wait to see who the next coach is they are going to miss out on transfer opportunities if they are in the portal or not. Either way, they would be waiting to make a decision.

And correct me if I am wrong, but once they enter the portal doesn't the school have to accept them back?

I wish we could convince Sparks to come to Athens. Possible NIL with Burrito Buggie?

Throw in some NIL with Purple Chopstick and I think we bring a strong package to the table.

MAC was terrible this year for sure as reflected in the rankings but let's be honest. There are three tiers of conferences in modern day basketball.

Tier 1) The P6. ACC, SEC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 12. Guaranteed multiple bids and the majority of top 25 and sweet 16 every year.

Tier 2) The "New" Mid-Majors. Group of about 4-6 conferences that vary by year. American, Atlantic 10, West Coast, Mtn West and sometimes Missouri Valley or Conf USA. These leagues have national media packages and name recognition. Are usually in the conversation for getting an at-large bid. Occasionally have top 25 teams and teams generally perform well in the tournament.

Tier 3) Everyone else. The 1-bid leagues. Any team in top 25 or ncaa tournament win is extremely rare or a Cinderella.

Even in the MAC Hey-day of the 90s they were ranked somewhere from 9/10-12 in the country. 9 or 10 puts you on the cusp of tier 2 but even ranked 11 or 12 is tier 3 now. So doesn't really matter whether you're 12 or 20, you're still getting zero national respect and only your auto bid.

Part of this is conference realignment and super conferences. Part of this is the growing financial divide between Ps and rest and another big part is the ever growing expansion of D1 taking more and more auto bids for lower tier conferences pulling the lower mid majors like MAC down to their tier.

I saw Nicholas Pavrette from Central Mich is now in the portal. 6'11, 210 pounder who could make some noise with us. Seemed like a bit of a bowling ball this year though, more PF's than points.

Quite a bit of wisdom in your post, except I would not include CUSA in that second group. Plus, the conferences in that second grouping, to me, are high majors.

If McDay, Granger, and BVP are out, we have one scholarship to work with, assuming we are honoring 13 scholarships.
