Great article.  Walter actually reminds me of another guy who transferred in and played a key role on an NCAA team.  That man was Mychal Green.  Most remember Fears and Leon the most from that run, and with good reason, but without Green the 'Cats never would have gone dancing that year.  He was an underrated defender and I didn't even realize he lead the team in scoring that year.

Green made that team dangerous much in the same way that Offutt has for this years version of the Cats.  However, Walter is a much better defender, and clearly his leadership has affected this team in ways I'm sure few if any of us anticipated.  He's added a level of toughness that can't really be measured.  Cooper certainly already had that "big-time" mentality, but I think Offutt has helped to instill that in the rest of the team.  He's kind of like the steadying veteran presence a young NBA team adds in the offseason that propels them to another.  The 'Cats certainly wouldn't be where they are without Walt.  Here's to a couple more big games from him this season.

“What’s funny was I wanted to go with him when he left,” Offutt said. “He counseled me not to do it, to stay, probably because of his relationship with coach (Thad) Matta.

Offutt would've been nice to have last year. That team might've had the defensive oomph it has now had he been on it.

Maybe, but I am actually happy that he had to wait a year now.  Last year still would have been an iffy year even with him after the turnover we had.  Instead we got him for this run and DJ's senior year, it aligned perfectly in my eyes in the end.
