Ha, we beat them on their floor and now we're in the sweet 16 and they STILL can't admit that maybe we are the better team.

Absolutely pathetic journalism. What a whining loser. I know a lot of my Marshall friends have no respect for him, so I won't believe that he is the chosen voice of Herd Nation.

I don't know.  I kinda agree with the moron--if a team beats you on your home court, then you are better than that team.

It says a lot when the reader comments are less homer-ish than the homer columnist

I watched 25 seconds of Marshall Basketball this year..they happened to be on tv and a MU player was fouled while attempting a shot..however the referee did not call it...the player let out a ENORMOUS F-BOMB...Techinical foul..player to bench rips his shirt out of his pants and a few seconds later the game ends in a Marshall loss by like 15..NO they are not better than Ohio in Basketball or Football.

It will be interesting to see if Marshall agrees to play us next year.

Well, 69, I think our game with them next year is a done deal and is in Athens.  Of course, I hope we absolutely rip them apart.

Terrible article by Landon, but not surprising.

I saw similar sentiments by a poster on the Akron board.

Given Marshall's rich and recent history of NCAA Tournament success, it's easy to see why he'd feel so certain that the Herd had a deep postseason run in them. I mean, just yesterday, Landon dreamed they were in the Final Four. That counts, right? That 0-5 record and 25-year hiatus from even appearing in the tourney only reflects a wicked combination of Marshall getting "screwed" (his word) and not trying hard enough against clearly inferior teams.

In related news, Landon assures us that Marshall's football team is a lot better than Ohio. It just wasn't trying as hard as Ohio when it lost 44-7 last year.

i wonder why he didn't mention the beat-down they took from Akron. Or losing to WVA a first round loser (sorry second round which is really the first round) but they did go 1-1 against Belmont

Landon is a clown, and no one should pay him any attention. I haven't had a single Marshall fan I know say a single negative word about us. Everyone I know is openly cheering for us and has been since Selection Sunday. I even know a Marshall fan with some Nashville connections who got tickets and traveled to cheer for us.

The Marshall fan base can be delusional and schizophrenic, but, Landon aside, they have their heads on straight right now.

Poor Marshall.  We thumped them 44-7 in football.  Then beat them in Huntington in hoops.  Then we make our Sweet 16 run.  And here I thought we were beneath them.

Has Marshall ever been to the sweet 16?  Just curious.

I remember after that game the Herd fans came to the conclusion that no one on the Bobcats could start for Marshall.  Chuck Landon is not alone in his delusions of grandeur.

Would you expect anything else from Upchuck? No. He is a total homer with zero objectivity. I have many friends who are Marshall fans and all of them think he is a joke.

I'm know I'm going to be ripped for this, but I don't see anything all that wrong with Chuck's column.  I've read many of his columns that I disagreed with to a much greater extent.  Yes, I think his assessment of Marshall being better than Ohio is off-base, but I might say the opposite thing if Marshall had won.  He is a partisan and so am I.  I guess I have the advantage of having argued many a time in person with Chuck back in the days when I was on the Marshall J-school faculty.  So, I can kind of read between the lines and see the sly smile on Chuck's face as he penned these lines.  And, for those who care, this is one of the first times I've seen Chuck refer to us more than once in an article as "Ohio."  I used to argue with him about this, too, back in the 1970s.  I think he finally got the memo.

But OCF, it appears that Landon didn't do much research.  If you check the RPI, Marshall and Ohio were almost identical by the end of the season, both of them being around 45.  In the Sagarins, Marshall is 80 and Ohio is 55 currently.

As another poster pointed out, he also fails to notice or mention that Akron handed the Herd a true beat down in Huntington, and Ohio beat Akron two out of three games this season.

I think it's another example of how Chuck cannot let go of his disdain and hatred for the MAC due to the way MAC kicked Marshall out and didn't give them a fair chance to return...but come on Chuck, that was over 40 years ago.  There's no one running Ohio athletics currently who is connected with that at all.  It's time to let go of that grudge and quit letting it effect his journalistic objectivity.

chuck's article sums up what you expect to hear over a few beers in the local bar. "We're so good, we deserve to be there bla bla bla". I'm not so sure that it has a place on even a local sports page.  If it has a place, perhaps a little more could be written about how close Marshall is to being in the top tier.  I think they have a good amount of talent - which by the way does not make them a better team-but clearly something is missing if they have so much talent.  They got hot at the end of the year in their tourny, but as I recall they got blown out by Memphis in the finals. Anyway, Herd, there's always next year. I'd let this year go silently off into the sunset if I were you. You have nobody to blame but yourselves about your underacheiving team.

edit" Chuck must have lots of time on his hands to come up with a word like "Spectating" to use in his title.

If Coach would have only put me in at QB in the 4th quarter we would have been State Champions, no doubt

But that's exactly the point.  They didn't win and this after hearing all week that the Herd had revenge on their minds for knocking them out of the CIT the year before (also in Huntington).  There was no lack of effort. There was no mailing it in.  This was an arse-whippin that only looked like a close game because we went into the prevent offense with four minutes to go and let them back in the game.  Plus I don't know how many people remember that game but we couldn't buy a call that day.  Reggie Keely could have filed charges for assault several times.

And just because he's written worse columns, that doesn't make this any less worthless.
