I don't care if OU grads never rooted for the Cats or even acknowledged that we had a team or if a current OU student wears OSU gear all the time and sez OSU is their #1 sports team....it's their life and they can do what they want....I just don't like hypocrites who now wear OU gear simply because we're winning.

I gotta admit, the bandwagoners kind of annoy me....But at the same time, I want their support.  It's a tough balancing act.  Borna touched on it, but it really really annoys me when people grossly overstate their fandom in times like this as though they have been there every game for years thru thick and thin.

Let the bandwagoners come, this team deserves every bit of the support and attention they're getting.

We're still the ones in charge of driving the wagon.

I think it's great.  Even beyond "bandwagon" OHIO fans, you know how many random people I know from Michigan are talking to me about the Bobcats?  Sending me text messages of the blue?  It's a great thing for the university's exposure and name recognition.  Come one, come all, I say.

Now let's see who's an O-H-I-O fan and who's a columbus fan.

Just keep building the product. Retain the level of play and maintain the new fans. Time to go all Butler, Gonazaga on the rest of the MAC. We were 3rd after all....time to recruit and dominate. Let me dust this off............as I said in July when Groce came.....Swing for the fences.

All aboard!

Anecdotal evidence: In my immediate vicinity at my office, there are 4 different collegiate affiliations represented, all of whom were in the tournament (OHIO, Vandy, UK, and UC). OHIO is the only team anyone is talking about this morning.

One of the Vandy grads was in Nashville this weekend (he buys 1st and 2nd round tickets every year 6 months in advance, and this year just happened to get our games). I received 4 emails from him over the weekend regarding our team, and he bought an Ohio t shirt, which he proudly showed me this morning.

Go Bobcats.

Exactly.

Not sure I would call alumni "bandwagon" fans. More like "OU fans" that are enjoying the basketball team right now.

Sports is a much smaller part of the experience at OU then it is at other schools.

Before anyone takes that the wrong way - let me explain, if there were no athletic programs at OU - would you still have went there? Would have still loved your time there? Etc.?

At OU, many people didn't follow the teams when they were in school or after they graduated. Going to the Sweet 16, makes a lot of them take notice and makes many of them proud (in not the sense OSU fans or a big school would be if they succeeded).

All this is going to do is increase attendance to games, give more incentive for alumni to re-visit the Athens campus and lead to more donations to the school and its athletic programs.

Let's not get into who was a fan first - this is not a big school, which only has big sports going for it, nor is this professional sports.

there is plenty of room on the bandwagon for everyone who wants to ride!  Grab a green and white pom-pom out of the bin and make some noise!

Kind of OT, but related. One of my initial thoughts after I drank two irish car bombs in celebration and calmed down, was that this will be great for our already all-time high applications. Because of this exposure more students will want to be part of the OHIO family. Suck on that Steve Hays.

I don't know the exact numbers, but if I remember correctly George Mason and VCU both got an absolutely HUGE uptick in applications after making their respective runs in the tournament.

Our application is still open, but it's very late in the game. The Gateway Scholarship application deadline is well-past due.

My first posts ever to the basketball forum have been in the last week. Does that make me a fair weather fan?  I just posted over here related to the Brady Hoke stuff, which at it's core was a football issue anyway. To be honest, I've never been a basketball fan, fair weather or otherwise, but I'm happy you're having a great run, and it's great to see people I have known on the football forum for a long time having a great time. I hope it continues.

Go Bobcats! Make history - an Ohio win would make them the lowest seed to ever make the final 8.

ANyone who has to ask just needs to get on board and STAY> Contribute, DOnate, spend time on the road and in the Convo.....it would make you fair weather if you got off after the excitement dies down.

I just hope we do not lose our freeking minds like Butler and those fans of programs who think once they got there they deserve to always be there.

THick and thin.....if you think you may be fair weather.....you hold the keys in the future......time will tell. It is not for me or anyone who has been here repping the program to decide. That is all on you my friend.

Once again... if you like what you see. Get out your checkbook and buy seasontix, gear and donate to the locker room for the recruits that are gonna want to see the guts of the operation.

Am I the only one that finds the phrase "bandwagon fans" used in connection with Ohio just surreal? Honestly, I never ever thought I'd see this in my lifetime. This is great!!

Great for applications.  And also for drawing back in alum and friends who left Athens over the years and have drifted away.

I kind of agree with you.  I also understand the passion behind RSBobcat's thoughts here, though I certainly wouldn't say it in the same way.  Personally, I wholeheartedly disagree with the opinion that a person can't have "two teams".  Generally speaking, I grew up in a household that is a Cincinnati household.  As a young adolescent, I absolutely loved Bobby Huggins' fire and intensity.  In fact, it was one of the reasons that I never really like Coach O'Shea from day one - he didn't have that.  It's the same reason that I have been a tremendous fan of John's since his introductory press conference.  My passion for OU hoops has grown tremendously since I stepped on campus in 1995.  I rooted for the Bearcats in those days, and still do.  I'm very excited about the proposition of UC knocking off OSU Thursday, but not nearly as excited as I will be on Friday when the ball is tipped against the Tar Heels.

Back to the theme of the thread....If you don't like the bandwagon, then I must assume you'd be okay seeing OUr team not win games, and see The Convo filled up with about 1200 people like Millet Hall, or CMU's, EMU's, or NIU's buildings?  Because when a team has great success, it has a bandwagon.  That is a fact.  Everyone hates on OSU, the Steelers, the Patriots, The Yankees, or Manchester United because their bandwagons are considered annoying, and because they win.  I repeat, because they win.  A lot.

If the worst symptom of having season's like this is having a bandwagon, and one that funds OUr ability to consistently compete at a higher level, then I'm good with that.  Heck, maybe it even allows us to financially afford to keep John Groce in Athens for a longer length of time, something I'm also fine with.

With that, I can't wait until Friday!

It's the "Two-Timers" that really t'd me off in the first place. OU alums who have decided for some unexplainable reason to embrace some "new/local" school. Treason - plain and simple - and suddenly NOW decide they just might come back. For what, through this tourney run? Then what next year? Don't think we're going to see much in the way of much long term $ support from those type.....................

Winning will grow the base of solid support - the fickle are not reliable.................

11 Jesus continued: “There was a bobcat who had two students. 12 The younger one said to his school, ‘Rufus, give me my diploma. I want to root for another school.’ So he divided his property between them.

13 “Not long after that, the younger student got together all he had, set off for a distant city and there squandered his loyalty in bandwagoning. 14 After he had forgotten his school, there was great success there, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that school, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my fellow Bobcats are rejoicing, while I am miserable! 18 I will set out and go back to my school and say to him: Rufus, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your graduate; make me like one of your hired servants.’ 20 So he got up and went to his school.

“But while he was still a long way off, Rufus saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his alumnus, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

21 “The graduate said to him, ‘Rufus, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your alumnus.’

22 “But Rufus said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.

25 “Meanwhile, the loyal Bobcat was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27 ‘Your fellow graduate has come,’ he replied, ‘and Rufus has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’

28 “The loyal alumnus became angry and refused to go in. So Rufus went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered Rufus, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this alumnus of yours who has squandered your name with buckeyes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’

31 “‘My son,’ Rufus said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

This thread reminds me of a Springsteen song, Land of Hope and Dreams, with a long-lost line at the end that wasn't part of the released version:

Well this train

Carries saints and sinners
This train
Carries losers and winners
This train
Carries whores and gamblers
This train
Carries lost souls
This train
Carries Bobcat bandwagon fans

Exactly WHO are you talking about? How many "two timers" have you identified? Are they here on Bobcat Attack? Or people you see walking down the street?

And how do you know they decided to "come back"?

And you don't see much in the way of $$ longer term? Do you work in fund raising at Ohio? Isn't it a bit premature to conclude that there will be no impact on fund raising?

I think you're 100% wrong!! Not only will contributions increase IMO but applications, enrollment and positive publicity will benefit the university.
