I floated this idea out there two years ago after the Georgetown win.  It didn't stick, but I think it should.  Let me paint the picture.

It's a glorious, autumn day in Athens, Ohio.  Thousands of alums are in town for the 2012 version of Homecoming.  Everyone is enjoying the day, as they do every single year.  The support for the football team is at an all-time high following 2011's bowl win and the beatdown Penn State was handed to open the current season's campaign.

Halftime has arrived.  It's 110 time, and as they take the field, all eyes in the stadium are on them, along with 400-500 former members right on the sideline.  This Homecoming halftime show is extra special, as the 110 is paying homage to Ronald P. Socciarelli, who passed away in February.  He directed the 110 from 1973 to 1990, and some of his hits will be selected for today's entertainment.  Following the playing of Alice Cooper's 'Poison', the excitement level in Peden is high, and it's time for the 'old' guys to join the 110 on the field.  They drive out and join forces, BUT before busting into 'Stand Up and Cheer', they pause:

(PROMOTIONS, TIME TO PAY ATTENTION)

The quasi-jumbotron kicks on.  For 90 seconds, it features non-stop highlights of the 2011-2012 Bobcat basketball campaign.  Keely dominating Buffalo, Kellog and Cooper draining 3's, blatant overuse of Russ yelling 'BANG', Stevie Taylor dancin' in the middle of the squad, Trey Burke looking like he's gonna cry.  All the other fun tidbits of the memorable season for EVERYONE in Peden to see.  I trust the video people can make it climatic.  It's glorious.  Peden is pumped.  Just in time for . . .

. . .the entire basketball team to be introduced.  Have them on the field, get cameras on them, build the excitement.  Have Rufus drive Groce out on the Bobcat Harley-Davidson.  Have a number to call for season tickets on the video board.  Highlight the premier home games (I'm hoping we have one or two of these).  Promote the Bobcat Club.  Make it known that this senior class has the opportunity to set a school record for wins.  Just run with the momentum.  Hell, pop off some fireworks too.  Why not?

Now it's time to hear 'Stand Up and Cheer' played by 600+ people.  Everybody's on their feet, clapping and singing.  Groce is so impressed he signs a 10 year extension on the spot.  Just pure euphoria.

Get it done.  Please.

Absolutely not.  You want to tick off 500 extremely devoted alumni?  Stick a promotion in the middle of their halftime show.  The band has to stand by as they run promotions before halftime shows every week, because they know people will watch as they wait for the band to take the field, let alone putting one right in the middle of a show.  I'm all for some promo at some point, but save it for between the quarters.

As one of those alumni you speak of, I can speak for myself and tell you I couldn't care less if I had to wait 90 seconds to honor the basketball team and their accomplishments. And I can't think of any other alum that I know that would care either, yourself excluded.

I'm not sure I've ever met a 110 alum who would be OK with any promotion in the middle of a halftime show, unless it was in direct connection with the band (like the Rose Parade presentation in 2009).  I would understand some type of video spot on the board for Mr. S, but a basketball spot?  I guess I'm just trying to understand why you would want to do it during the band's half-time show, especially this year, when I envision that SUAC will be played with more emotion from OUr Alumni then ever before?

Besides, this would open the door to a whole new level of promotions encroaching on the band's show.  You do it once, and every sport thinks they deserve a shout-out during the show.

Well, then just tweak my original proposal to before or after the show then. The point is that we have a very captive audience full of alums in town, and you could really pump up the 2012-2013 season by honoring the team.

Good on you Ozcat... I just made it back to DC and I have been depressed about the loss this whole time but this makes me feel a bit better. This type of event would be awesome. Go Bobcats!

This thread about Marketing and Promotions reminded me of a thread on the Wake Forest Board earlier in the week.

There has been a Buzz-Out Campaign that started about the day after Jeff Bzdelik was hired as the Wake Forest Coach.  The side-by-side contrast of John Groce promoting the Ohio program and the depression of the Bzdelik presser in incredible.  Hard to believe this is the school that produced Tim Duncan and Chris Paul.

I agree that promoting our bball team's success at a football game is a good idea but doing in the middle of a 110 performance is blasphemous. Plenty of opportunities pre or post game to do so.

If NCAA half time "time" is not a constraint then this is rather easy to choreograph.  When the alumni band enters the field they push back the 110 to the sideline approaching the visitor bench--and only a quick march from the Bobcat inflatable.  Once the alumni band has done it's thing they charge off the field.  The 110 would simply split in two and form their typical pregame entrance by the inflatable Cat and have the basketball team come out through the inflatable as if they were the football team and announce the team results as the players, coaches stand at mid field--no need to announce individuals other than JG as it is the team that is being honored.  All time would be under 4 minutes.  Only thing is the alumni band has to clear the field quickly so they can enjoy the ceremony too--after all, there are new alums that played at the MAC, Nashville and St. Louis tourney that love the basketball team as much as they love the football Bobcats.  The song played would obviously be "THRILLER".

Good blending of old and new.

I was just telling my friend about an idea I had that allowed new alumni to buy season tickets for both football and basketball at a decent price.  Just for the one year, then start introducing them to the alumni clubs we have.  It's a good time to strike while the iron is hot.

Love the ticket idea for alums.  I would also do a couple charter buses from Columbus for select games to try and capture the casual fans.   For those who did the alumni charters this year, how were they received?

impossible. especially on homecoming. you're trying to squeeze in 4 minutes to a 15 minute break when the regular activities are planned down to the second, and are constantly in danger of going over. remember the fight with the alumni band and the miami football team in 92? that was because of time; there's never enough.

the best you can hope for is to have the bball team run out on the field as fast as possible between the 3rd and 4th quarter, wave to the crowd, and run off.

If anyone from Alum Assn is reading, my best OU buddy noted that missing from Homecoming appear to be tents/gatherings for specific classes (whether by year or major) and/or or to mark specific reunions (10th, 20th, etc).  A way to renew or create specific ties in addition to the general goodwill of Homecoming.    Is this being done?

Also, miami sucks.

I believe UC did this a few years ago to attract people to Football.  However I think it may have been more of you had to buy Football tix to go along with your season tickets to Basketball.  Not so much a 2 for 1 deal.

I love the 110 as much as anyone and I'm not trying to be"that guy," but does the 110 even exist in it's current state without intercollegiate athletics, namely men's basketball and football?  They are presented opportunities to perform in other venues because of basketball and football.  Does a video of the 110 performing "Party Rock Anthem" garner several million views if it takes place in Mem-Aud?  I think not.  

By no means would I like to see the b-ball team overtake a performance by the 110, but let's be realistic here.  OUr athletes hold a great appreciation for the 110, and I believe that feeling is certainly mutual.  Perhaps a better solution would be to have the hoops team lead the band onto the field, pause for a minute to recognize their accomplishments, Groce or Coop says a quick, yells GO OHIO, band plays stand up and cheer, then rolls into their half-time show.  If it was well coordinated, you could easily knock the whole thing out in 60 seconds and maximize the exposure.

Are any of the solutions proposed on this thread the perfect one? ABSOLUTELY NOT

It's a fairly pointless exercise to come up with what the exact experience should be here because nobody has a full working knowledge of what promotions, athletics and the 110 among other key stakeholders that I don't even know about needs to happen in that 15 minute (halftime) time block. 

I think we can all agree that it's a great idea to try to build on the momentum from this season, and leaning on all of our assets including the 110 and the homecoming crowd should be the best way to do it.

New thought.  Instead of a parachuting Rufus bringing in the game ball, have the entire basketball team do it.  That would be cool.

Also, a highlight of this year's run should be played at EVERY home game throughout the season.  Overkill is the name of the game.  I want to average 8,000+ next year.

Xavier does this for new alums, I think its for 3 years after you graduate. Discounted at 30% I believe. Forgive me for not backing up my info with facts.
