So Oats star freshman player provided the gun that was used in the murder?

Nate says "wrong spot...wrong time" concerning Miller's involvement. Umm...Miller chose to be at the wrong place after receiving a text from Darius Miles to bring his teammate's loaded gun to him on a street corner.

Good lord.

No punishment?

The woman is probably alive today if Miller doesn't bring the gun to his teammate. How is Miller not charged as an accessory? Can somebody smarter than me who knows the law explain this?

The gun belonged to Miles didn't it? And there's no evidence that Miller knew what it was going to be used for? So really it just seems like "hey bring me the thing you have that belongs to me."

I think you're oversimplifying what took place. Yes, Miller might not have brought the gun with the intention of it being used in a murder but he still had a role in what went down.

For Alabama not to suspend him pending an investigation was negligent on their part and looks even worse in hindsight. Nate Oats' comments today were incredibly stupid, downplaying Miller's involvement to justify their inaction following the shooting.

There's people calling for them both to suspended indefinitely with some wanting Oats fired. We know Alabama won't fire him but this is much more serious than how their program has addressed the incident.

Oats was shady at Buffalo and he's shady now. Dude only cares about himself and his own image, wins and how he appears. I hope Sears enjoys the "S" show he's put himself into and losing in the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament.

Oats' comments were really tone deaf and the situation involving Miller seems "icky." Did he do anything legally wrong? Obviously he wasn't charged, so it seems not. But it's also not like he was taking a phone charger or a wallet to his teammate. I feel like if someone calls or texts and says "can you bring me my gun," giant red flashing lights and alarms should be going off in your head. Bottom line, my feeling is that if it wasn't the star freshman and teams leading scorer, the situation probably would have been handled very differently by Alabama.

I’m sure Saban knows (intellectually) that Alabama has a basketball program, but i can’t imagine that it occupies much more space in his mind than that.

Could Saban name any starting basketball player at Alabama (men’s or women’s)? Could he name the coach? Pick the coach out of a lineup?

I think he can do all three. I happened to work at one time with PGA golfer Justin Thomas' awesome grandma and she told me that during the recruiting process that Alabama set up a brief meeting with Nick Saban while Justin/his family were on the official campus visit. I understand that Justin has been helpful to the Alabama athletic department in many ways since he's been on the PGA tour.

Seems like pretty sour grapes. The hard truth is Sears is likely rolling in NIL money, playing close to home and starting for the #2 NET ranked team in the country.

Had he stayed in Athens, he'd probably be looking up in the MAC standings at Toledo and/or Kent State (Ohio would still have major problems at forward and center) and hoping to make an improbable run in Cleveland just to slither into the tournament.

Do you honestly think he has a single regret about leaving?

Sears' hometown college (North Alabama - now D-1) is looking more and more like a big dance contender every week all of a sudden having won 9 of the last 10 games. He should bolt Tuscaloosa and finish in Florence at UNA. (even though that would mean UNA would start four guards next season)

There will be many that will disagree with this, but the first hint I saw that indicated Oats might be a "me first" kind of guy was the timing when he left Buffalo. If you will recall, his wife had just recovered from cancer and the reports were that the doctors at the State University of New York at Buffalo were some of the finest in the world for the particular cancer she had. There were quotes from his wife indicating that she really didn't want uproot at that time and have to change doctors. Maybe I was reading between the lines incorrectly, but it seemed like she didn't want to leave Buffalo until several more years had passed since her initial cancer. Then, he up and leaves. Again, I'm not stating that have any inside information. I'm just going on what was being reported at the time that I saw. May be way off base, but that was kind of the feeing I got at the time, and his actions in this case seem to confirm that he might be a what's-in-it-for-number-1 type of guy.

I think from a legal standpoint, the challenge is proving intent.

That's how the law is written in Alabama. You need to be able to prove that there was intent to further a crime. If they've seen the text message and Miller can state that he had no idea why he was asked to bring the gun, there's nothing to charge him with.

It's my understanding that there are plenty of states where that's not the case. But in Alabama, gun laws are very lax despite the country's second highest rate of gun deaths per capita.

Here's a link to a statement released by Miller's lawyer: https://twitter.com/JournoRyan/status/1628502011317563392...

As you might expect, paints a much different picture than initial reports. Interesting to note though that his attorneys claim that Miller has the entire night recorded via dashcam and it confirms this telling.

Hard to say what's accurate, but if you were to take this at it's word "wrong place, wrong time" actually sort of aptly describes what happened.

As so often happens, what Paul Harvey called "the rest of the story" rarely gets reported or if it does, it gets buried. Here are additional quotes from Oats.

Interesting quotes, but not sure what to make of them. Maybe his recasting of his statements is an accurate reflection of how he really feels, and maybe they are not. Really hard to tell. As I said in a post above, I am skeptical of the man's sincerity in general, but I obviously know nothing about the actual specifics of this case and his real feelings any more than any of the rest of us speculators. As things play out, we may get a much better handle on things.

The only thing that seems undeniable is that given the evidence, as it publicly known at this point, Miller did not commit a crime under Alabama law He may have shown very bad judgement, but that's not a crime.

Gotta be honest, pretty impressive that with all of the controversy about whether he should be playing at all, Brandon Miller went for 41 points and hit a game winner in OT.

That shows focus, if nothing else.

Watched most of the game as it had a great deal of interest in the basketball world here in the Carolinas. Kid definitely has game. Very Durant like. Seth Greenburg was also hugely complimentary of Sears and his game and role at Alabama. made sure to mention Ohio when talking about him.

If anything, this incident increases Sears' exposure. Alabama basketball is #2 in the country with an ongoing murder case.

If a star player in Athens gave another player a gun that murdered someone, the Classics and World Religion faculty would likely chain themselves to the doors of the Convo until the entire athletics department was shutdown. Savvy move by Sears going to a program willing to ensure his exposure to the NBA scouts is not diminished by off-the-court issues.

First of all, SUNY Buffalo doesn’t have a cancer center. The world class cancer center that you referring to is Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), which is an independent (from SUNY Buffalo) comprehensive cancer center chartered/organized as a Public Benefit Corporation. Many RPCI faculty have (unpaid) joint appointments with the SUNY Buffalo graduate school so that they can train graduate students. The institute itself is not a sub-unit of SUNY Buffalo [Source: i got my PhD at RPCI]

Secondly, people travel great distances (cross country) to get to their cancer center of choice based on their malignancy all the time. This is particularly true if people are in remission/following the main upfront course of treatment. While having to travel further is certainly a hardship, that hardship is diminished considerably if your household is making ~$5million/year, you have access to a private jet, and you have (far) better than average health insurance coverage.

I don't dispute a word you say. When she referred to oncologists in Buffalo, I just ASS-U-MEd she was talking about doctors at the university. It seemed the context of her remarks indicated that. You are also correct about jetting around for medical care if you're making megabucks. Maybe she enjoys those flights back to Buffalo, if that's what's happening. All I was going on was the way she made that statement seemed to imply she wanted to say near her Buffalo doctors for awhile. But, as I said, this was just my takeaway and it might not be correct.

Regarding the larger point (her feelings on moving, my entire second paragraph) your take and interpretation was a fair one. I was mostly just salty over the Roswell Park erasure. Apologies for jumping down your throat a bit.

I stand by getting salty in the first paragraph though, as obscure a hill to die on as it is :)

Given the cost of healthcare treatment in America, I could see the Oates' feeling as though they had no choice but to leave for Alabama. Cancer treatments typically cost about 150k per year out of pocket. Those costs are more like 200k for lymphoma. He was making 600k at Buffalo. Do the math on taxes, mortgage payments, and then subtract 200k. That gets tight pretty quickly.

In other words, a "me first" decision from one perspective is easily what's best for the family from another.
