Ticket sales looking pretty good. Could be in for a 9K+ type crowd, which would be impressionable. Attendance does matter.
8,322. And the crowd definitely was a factor.
It looked like a *better* crowd, but as always - and I'm a broken record on this... the student section was packed to the gills... friends and family section... spotty, at best.

Feels like no one has ever considered how games look on TV.

Would Duke games look like Duke games if the Crazies weren't the focus of the camera? If instead of looking at students jumping and chanting and pointing we were watching Coach K / Scheyer and the team benches? Watching everyones parents behind the bench?

The camera angle in the Convo is horrid. Never does us any favors.

It was a heck of a lot of fun. This was the third game I've taken my GF to, and this one by the middle of the first half, it led me to say, "This is what is used to be like more often that not" in terms of noise and atmosphere.

I agree. We still have the firepower to shock people this year but Boals is building. A starting lineup of Jaylin, Elmore, AJ Brown, AJ Clayton and a portal big with a bench of Wiz, Miles, Rod, Izuma and another transfer is tough next year. Not to mention Sheldon.
No. No, it's not. This is not a good roster. Sorry.
BLove is correct.

Kidding ourselves if we think we are close to Kent, Akron and Toledo starting five.
I agree -- there's just not enough there right now unless the freshmen take some big steps. Based on what I see now, this roster needs at least two impact transfer's this summer in my mind.

I have to ask -- BRod and Miles are seniors, right? Wiz has another year of eligibility? There are several guys with multiple years of eligibility that I can see not being here next year, but I'm trying to understand how many scholarships are left to give for next year?

The Gary Trent jersey retirement game was one of the coolest memories I have when it comes to Ohio hoops. It was Dad's weekend and I was fortunate enough to experience that game with my dad (also an Ohio athletics alum).

That game truly felt like a major p5 game as far as energy and attendance. Without the ice storm, the Convo would've absolutely been filled to beyond capacity.

Court street was also on another level that night. It was hilarious watching people slip and slide heading back down Richland to West Green after the bars.
I remember that well. I attended that one as a Dad. Great game, great atmosphere! That was before the switch to semesters which led to Dads weekend games landing on exhibition games. I never missed one while my kids were there.

Funny side story - I remember speaking with an ex Jackie O's bartender. He was adamant that Dads weekend was his favorite to work. Said we were all so deliriously happy to be there. Made for a fun atmosphere and great tips.

Just went over to the Fiami site to see what they're saying about the game. Neat article about Charlie Coles. While I hate those guys, MAC basketball lost a great one in him. [/QUOTE]Re: the Dad's weekend comment: why on earth can't Ohio Athletics and the powers that be that schedule family weekends schedule Dad's weekend on a better weekend? I'm a broken record on this, but the opportunities missed by scheduling this when there's no game of consequence is significant. I'm continually amazed by simple things that this athletic department leaves on the table and/or never seems to improve on. That's one big example. The point about the camera's is another:

1st game in the Convo in 4 years. Some random thoughts.

A win against Miami is always fun. Nice to have a pre-game beverage in the Convo before the game too. But those were both average teams on the court.

Elmore gives me optimism for next year. I would be fine with a backcourt of he and Hunter. I thought Elmore was the best player on the court. He looks like he belongs. With DWIII leaving, I agree with other posters. Unless the freshmen take a huge step forward, we need an couple of impact transfers to compete for a MAC title.

Question about the student section. Was it really packed to the gills? One section was the band, the other was ROTC. Is the student section just one or 2 sections of the lower level? I'll avoid the rant about why students don't attend the games for now.

Any day in Athens is a great day. Beautiful weather. Took some time and drove around South Green for the first time in a long time and saw all of the changes up close that have been made and was very impressed.

Well since we're piling on, what about letting chickfila come in and throw RED F***ING shirts into the stands... while we're playing Miami. This shit needs to get vetoed.

The university and the athletics department really ought to just designate the second weekend in November as Dad's Weekend every year. Even after the move to semesters, we still were able to get that to work. Those Portland and Northern Iowa games were Dad's Weekend and they were both 10K+ games. Commit to making it a home date with a D1 opponent. You're going to have two or three USC-Upstate/St. Francis types game a year anyway, so put one of those opponents on that weekend and show the dads a real college basketball game. What would we rather have? 5,000 in the house for an exhibition with Rio Grande, or 10,000 in the house for a consequential game with North Alabama?

Great time in the Convo on Saturday! I think us as a section were a bit inconsistent in noise but otherwise we were very cohesive in chants. Saw Chad Estis and Rush Floyd in the building and thought I saw Ron Harper? Cool to see them in the Convo. I want Elmore starting from now on and getting constant minutes, dude is a dog and looks like he belongs on the court. I hope we get AJB back soon to end the year. Jaylin seems to be breaking out. Hopefully this game can be a start of momentum for us to end the year.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: We were very quick to grant AJ Brown the most outstanding freshman, but I seriously think Elmore James may/could/will be better...

I only saw parts of the game on replay, but it looks like Boals has tightened his lineup. All starters played at least 30 mins. Clayton with only 7 mins off the bench. Wiz 10 and Baker 15.

They’re much closer than I orginally thought. The idea of them both starting together is exciting and I hope we get to see that sooner than later.

Wiz getting more minutes than Clayton is asinine in my opinion. For awhile it looked like Boals was allowing himself to get away from the direct DW+Wiz=40 formula but it seems we are back in it. Coach Clayton up to focus more on the paint and let him spell DW. He has pretty good positioning and touch around the rim when he commits to it.

I hope Jaylin's outside shot sticks around like this. He has been an all-MAC performer the past few weeks whiles Miles has fallen off a bit. I feel like we haven't really seen a game where both of those 2 are on, but if we do we would be tough to beat with that + DW.

I’ve thought this after the first couple of games that I saw them play; especially when “freshman“ is included, but I do think their respective “ceilings” are more difficult to ascertain. James had the physique seemingly from day one to bang in the MAC. I think another year will be AJ’s friend. (Of course it won’t hurt Elmore either)

It is, but I’m wondering if it has to do with Clayton’s disinterest in playing down low. He hardly does it. I’m sure the staff is aware of his stats inside and outside the 3 point line. Maybe going from 27 minutes to 7 (pretty significant drop off) is a result of him not listening because it doesn’t make sense to play Wiz more. We’ll see if that trend continues tonight.

My gut tells me that ain't it. Russ has said several times "he has the green light from there" and "he's told to fire from there." Have to believe that is coming from somewhere. Doesn't seem like the type of kid to be told to get in the paint and say "nah F you" and hang out on the perimeter.

I’ve heard Russ say that as well, but Clayton’s seen his role go from starter to playing just 7 minutes this last game; on a team that lacks size. The only thing that hasn’t changed is his desire to roam around the perimeter.

I doubt he’s the “nah F you” type as well, but as much as we critique Wiz for not improving as the season has gone on, Clayton hasn’t exactly either. My guess is there’s correlation between how he’s played to date and the reduced PT. Whether he’s being coachable or not. But again, maybe Saturday’s game is an outlier and the minutes go back up.

If you draft the letter to whomever it needs to go to, this whole board would probably sign it, because you are 100% correct.

Ha.

I think Frying the RED CHICKENS is a natural promotion. Not sure how to get that on a Green ChikFilA shirt but the Redchickens nee Redskins need to be cooked and served on a regular basis. Even if you throw a red shirt it needs to have a classic meme on it to commemorate the killing, plucking and subsequent roasting of the bird.

He is John's brother and that is why the nepotism rules kicked in when he was considered for a job here when Groce was hired if I remember that thread from the old board.

As for turning it around, I think he certainly turned Xavier around. Took them in the complete opposite direction from where the previous staffs had them going.
