Trying to get a gauge on how many of the most faithful of 'Cat fans--us here--know the words.  'cause I don't think many do from being in attendance at St. Louis and hearing most clap only instead of singing also to Stand Up.  And, I bet a lot lower % of the more casual 'Cat fans don't know the words.*

If I'm right, I'm going to do the single most obvious thing to change this.

*Words are powerful.

Not to thread-jack but additionally everyone is aware of the clapping/spelling OHIO cheer we do after the fight song (O---H---I---O---) the very last thing you say in that is not O really loudly, but actually the word OHIO. When you shout Ohhhhhhhh! Like we're cheering for the letter O, it makes me want to punch myself in the face.

Ask anyone in the 110. They'll tell you I speak the truth.

He speaks the truth.  Also hearing people spell OH-IO during Stand Up and Cheer like it is hang on sloopy makes me want to punch myself. .....for to win the race.... (this is also wrong!)

I've noticed this too.  It seems to me all the folks who learned this cheer in the 1960s, say OHIO at the end.  The younguns seem to say "Ohhhhhhhhh."  I, too, like the original version better.  Are you saying the 110 does the original version?  If so, that's good news.  I guess they often get drowned out by the "Ohhhhhers" in the O-Zone.  I'm glad you mentioned this, because I've been planning to mention this in a post myself.  It bugs me too.

Yes, the 110 says "OHIO" at the end. I didn't even realize that (seemingly) everyone else said "Ohhhhhhh!!!" until I graduated back in '04.

Think about it, there's no reason you would say "O" twice at the end "O-H-I-O, O-H-I-O, OHIO!!!!!!!!!!" makes far more sense than
"O-H-I-O, O-H-I-O, Ohhhhhh!".

Kinda surprised that many people know both the alma mater and fight song. I'll call myself ignorant and uninformed...the only time I ever heard the alma mater sang was at my graduation ceremony.

Most of that 33 are probably from the 110 or SMO!

They sing it before every football game. Not sure about bball as I am not able to make it to many games.

I only know the chorus part of Alma Mater Ohio.  Does that count?

Better yet, when was the last time anyone looked at the lyrics to the whole song?
edit: I just did and didn't recognize anything but the chorus.

I don't know the alma mater song. Figure Ohio's mentioned somewhere in it.

I know the gist of SU&C and probably get 80-90% of the words correct. Though sometimes when I sing along I feel like I'm back in the ol' confessional trying to recite the Act of Contrition to an angry priest who's quick to point out the many mistakes.

But I'm totally on point playing the air cymbals to it. And that's really all that counts.

I always thought it odd that a few  of our MAC foes sing the ALma Mater with team, band and cheerleaders before leaving the court post game.

I think it was midway through my sophomore year before I learned the cheer ended with OHIO.  We need to indoctrinate better!

Also, I said I knew both, but to be honest, the alma mater I only know the chorus well.  (And the football team sings it with/to the band after every game.  Do ya'll not stick around for the post-game show??!)

Very surprised that so many know Stand Up.  Didn't hear very many singing it at St Louis.  Maybe I just sat among a bad crowd element.

I think "knowing it" and "singing it" are two different things. I know it, but don't usually sing it in the stadium/arena. Same goes for the national anthem.

I know when I went during Freshman orientation they kinda forced us to learn the Alma Mater in a group session type thing where someone (god help me if I would remember the name) basically sang it and made us repeat it like 4-5 times. And for me... that has made me remember it and my wife just laughs when I break out and belt it out after a big win.

I had the joy of singing the fight song solo on live local TV last Friday night . . .  I was nervous, but I think I did  pretty much ok. Luckily nobody seems to have recorded it!
