Isn't UC's former AD currently an AD at one of these big10 school's? Wouldn't Mick Cronin be a candidate since this AD hired him at Cincy?

Mick Cronin did have great year this season, but has been on the hot seat for his entire time in Cincinnati. He finally has some respect in that city - might lose a lot of it, if he blows this game against Texas.

Anyways, I want point out that Illinois fans would not like that signing and after already going through that in Cincinnati with Cronin - I would be extremely shocked if they would express any interest at all.

Like others have said, Nebraska seems like they are going to try to put money into their basketball program. I can see it being a good job for someone who can build their program. BUT you have to build it. That will take time and patience. I just don't see Groce willing to take that chance because there is risk with building Nebraska as they are in the Big Ten with quite a few great teams and no true natural recruiting area to draw from.

This is spot on. The only quibble might be with recruiting; lots of Nebraska players (albeit ** and *** players) have been accepting out-of-state offers if they're not receiving offers from Creighton ... and with good reason: they don't have much faith in the NU program either. There will be a tough row to hoe for any coach who decides to roll the dice on NU basketball. They'll need to hook some in-state talent, but also scour the country for a "go-to" guy. That won't be an easy task which simply underscores the "time and patience" stated by Piney.

I saw a blog today saying Cronin might be the front-runner, based on his relationship with the AD.  Of course, that's not always the deciding factor.

Nebraska hired Tim Miles from Colorado State to replace Doc Sadler as coach on Friday.

Good. Now that can be put to rest. If Groce leaves after the season his team had, with a sweet 16 bid ending by taking the #4 ranked team in the country to overtime, and having to look in the eyes of the men who gave everything they had for 45 minutes in the locker room knowing how close they were to winning that game, then he has no soul. I put a 0% chance Groce leaves after this season. Maybe I think too highly of people, but I just can't see it happening.

If Nebraska made a hire before they even had a chance to speak to Groce, because you know, he's too busy taking NC to the brink, then that tells me that someone in the Groce camp told Nebraska that he was not interested.  Good news for us.

Get yo' popcorn ready.  2012-2013 Ohio Bobcat Basketball.

Ive said all along the Illinois job is the only job we should be concerned about.  I'll be following that search closely.

The Illini fans are all buzzing over 3-4 names:

Chris Collins: kinda, sorta said he is interested. Heard UofI has contacted him, but nothing beyond this has happened.

Brad Stevens: denied reports yesterday afternoon that he has been contacted for the UofI job. However, has admitted that watching the NCAA tournament is driving him crazy and that Butler's situation makes it very difficult to make the tournament. My money is on Stevens. His name has loss a little luster this season and if he wants out, this may be one of his last shots.

Johnny Dawkins: Stanford head coach

John Groce: Nothing has been said, but there is interest. The problem is that the UofI fan base is not thrilled about having a coach who has not won a regular season championship. Lots of newspapers claim Groce fits the hiring process of Mike Thomas, the U of I AD.

There are other names in the mix, but the Collins and Stevens make regular appearances on the search. Groce is getting recent attention.

Stevens makes the Illini sweat with joy. Groce...not so much.

Nebraska hires Tim Miles from Colorado State, so Groce is out of the picture there.

In 24-48 hours Groce to Illinois has heated up in a big way. Stevens appears to be the alumni's choice, but Groce appears to be the front runner. The only group not thrilled is the Illinois alumni. Right now Groce is dominating much of the talk at the Illinois message board.

Illinois has wads of cash to throw at Groce and won't balk to get their man.

I'm typically an optimist and like to expect Groce to return. However, I'm feeling that Illinois is going to offer one of these guys a contract and they would be foolish not to consider.

We can probably change this topic to "Illinois eying Groce"

Looks like Groce is their top target at this point.

How much does this factor into it:  I can't imagine a year that at least one 'big name' school will not be looking for a coach; Coach can stay with us at least one more and still be sure that there will be opps down the road.
