Exactly.  I've no enmity against Groce.  Don't read anything negative into that.  (Would I have done the same thing thta he did?  Don't know; maybe..maybe not.)  I enjoyed his time here.

But that time is over.  He made his decision.  And I've made mine.

D-I-T-T-O!!!!

Although in the spirit of full disclosure, I probably WOULD leave if my pay was being increased over 400%! Well, not if it were M&^!% of Ohio offering the job......

OCF, you're being delusional as usual.  The majority of this forum never thought we had a Shaka Smart or Brad Stevens.  You know why?  Because both of those gentleman earn a 7 figure salary.  Our best offer to Groce would have only been halfway towards that figure.  If you really think that he was leading you on, then you're probably in for a HUGE letdown when you don't get to marry Kate Upton . . .

I know you were trying to make a point, but I forgot everything you wrote when I read "Kate Upton"

But anyways, OHIO fans are emotional right now and have very right to be.

I believe the majority will forgive JG once they take a few days, look back and see what he did for the program.

If the correct hire is made, it is much better for OHIO to get a new coach this year than next. However, this new coach (Boals) better be able to win with this group - hate to waste one of the school's best rosters of all-time.

Not sure if I will root for Illinois, but I would like the man to succeed and then leave again to get that $2.5 million per. I would also like for him to succeed without a single Chicago high school player - just out of spite.

The folks that now have the "He's dead to me" attitude are selfish and have a delusional view of what Ohio is.  JG did everything he could during his time here to bring success and honor to our school.  He built a program that TOS had let crumble.  He recruited big time players.  Our current roster is full of talented, quality young men.  He was a great ambassador of our school.  He was liked and respected by nearly everyone he came in contact with during his time in Athens.

I always want a coach that is on their way up, not on their way down.  We had that with TOS and Larry Hunter.  It wasn't any fun.

A few facts regarding records:

O'Shea:

2001-02 Ohio 17-11 11-7 3rd-East
2002-03 Ohio 14-16 8-10 5th-East
2003-04 Ohio 10-20 7-11 5th-East
2004-05 Ohio 21-11 11-7 T-2nd-East NCAA First Round
2005-06 Ohio 19-11 11-8 4th-East
2006-07 Ohio 19-13 9-7 4th-East
2007-08 Ohio 20-13 9-7 3rd-East
Ohio: 120-95 66-57

56% overall and 54% in MAC.

Hunter:

1989-1990 Ohio Bobcats 12-16 5-11
1990-1991 Ohio Bobcats 16-12 9-7
1991-1992 Ohio Bobcats 18-10 10-6
1992-1993 Ohio Bobcats 14-13 11-7
1993-1994 Ohio Bobcats 25-8 14-4   NCAA 1st Round
1994-1995 Ohio Bobcats 24-10 13-5   NIT 2nd Round
1995-1996 Ohio Bobcats 16-14 11-7
1996-1997 Ohio Bobcats 17-10 12-6
1997-1998 Ohio Bobcats 5-21 3-15
1998-1999 Ohio Bobcats 18-10 12-6
1999-2000 Ohio Bobcats 20-13 11-7
2000-2001 Ohio Bobcats 19-11 12-6
Ohio Bobcats: 204-148 123-87

58% overall and 59% MAC.

Groce:

2008–2009 Ohio 15–17 7–9 9th
2009–2010 Ohio 22–15 7–9 9th NCAA 2nd Round
2010–2011 Ohio 19–16 9–7 5th CIT Quarterfinals
2011–2012 Ohio 29–8 11–5 3rd NCAA Sweet Sixteen
Ohio: 85–56 34–30

60% overall and 53% MAC.

Clearly the numbers show all 3 coaches were in the same ballpark as far as wins/losses. Groce got us to NCAA twice which is why he's moving up.

One thing that concerns me regarding Groce departure is whether we'll even be eligible next year for NCAA given that we're hurting as far as the academic part goes. And the turnover we saw in recent years is bothersome.

You say O'Shea let the program "crumble"? I'd disagree -- since both O'Shea and Hunter had records in their respective tenures that matched the precentages during Groce's 4 years.

Jeff, count me solidly in your "court" on this one. I have nothing but respect for Groce. The days of Synder/Hess are long gone and Groce, in my opinion gave OHIO his all while he was here.

The guy was just offered 5 times what he was making at OHIO to go to a Big Ten power school in one of the power conferences in America. Harkening back to our '05 appearance in the NCAA's against Florida(stocked with future NBA'ers) we were an "airball" from knocking them off. We were going to return Fears,Leon and a cast of thousands, were the "Katz" meow, an "IT" team and our future looked bright. We ALL know how that turned out.

Yea, Groce was going to return a full monty of a roster. He however had NO guarantees that that was going to guarantee success. As they say with the stock market, "past performance is NO guarantee of future results". The iron quite possibly may never have been hotter for Groce at this particular moment at OHIO. How could he not accept the Illini offer?

The guy didn't make a lateral move(Geno) or a backward move(TOS) for more money. He took a BigTime Job at a BigTime School in a BigTime Conference that will have him competing against the elite in collegiate coaching. He also has created tons and tons and tons of FREE POSITIVE publicity for OHIO in coaching OHIO to 3 NCAA wins, 1 near NCAA win and how is it not a positive that a BigBoy School in a BigBoy Conference wants OHIO's coach?

I know some are saying yea, but, Shaka and Stevens stayed at Mid-Majors. Yea but, Shaka and Stevens are getting paid BigBoy money to do so. Next to impossible in a MAC school as the MAC "attempts" to serve 2 masters, D1 football and D1 basketball, and NO MAC school has the resources or a T Boone Pickens to foot the tab for both at the BigBoy market rate.

Sad that he left, certainly. Surprising, not at all. I don't know how he could have made any decision other than the one he made and that was to take the Illini opportunity. I fully expect for him to give the Illini his "all" in making it a success for them as well. I would expect nothing less from him based on how he handled himself here. I wish he and his family the best.

Groce had to put Humpty Dumpty back together again after O'Shea broke him. If allowed to stay, TOS would have done some serious damage. It was good he left when he did. Things were getting bad.
