I wonder what Self would say if we had played Kansas after beating UNC...

Was the Sweet 16 Tulsa's Final Four in 2001?

I know message boards were partially created to take things out of context, but let's stop and read the full quote and article. Self was simply supporting his old school and Groce. No problem with what he said.

“Why is he not being well received?’’ he said. “I got Tulsa to the Elite Eight when I got the [Illinois] job. He got Ohio to the Sweet 16. That’s huge. So often, the resume can be overrated. Him taking Ohio U to two tournaments in the last three years and going to the Sweet 16 this year is like several other programs going to the Final Four.’’

I have no problem with that. He is complimenting Ohio and Groce. Leading Ohio to a Sweet 16 is a lot bigger than leading Kansas or some other schools to one. I don't think anyone would disagree with that.

Lash, I'm with you. I'm also overly sensitive about having things taken out of context. I also took it as a compliment and found the quote interesting because I hadn't thought about it that way. Us getting to the Sweet 16 is like big programs getting the Final Four.

So when we make it to the Final Four next year, that will be like winning the championship.

Best part of this article for us is is the open acknowledgement that Groce inherited zip, zilch and nada from Timmy.  Thankfully, he's not returning the favor.

He's right. It's not like Devaughn Washington, Tommy Freeman, and KVK were key cogs that helped us win an NCAA Tournament game or anything.

Yes...thank you! Why are people acting like oshea left the cupboard totally bare? We won 20 and a postseason game in his last year. We had tillman, tommy, kvk, michael allen, devaughn. People act like we were a single-digit win team when he arrived. Groce inherited a pretty good situation and made it better to his credit, but the cupboard was far from bare.

Reaching the sweet sixteen is a huge accomplishment for a school that hadn't even won a regular season title in the MAC since 1994. The Difference between Ohio and Illinois is that just making the tournament isn't that impressive with those resources. For Ohio making the sweet sixteen generated far more publicity. VCU, Butler, George Mason made it all the way and Kent State to the final four, but Ohio was the team that stuck out this year. We were the team that everybody was talking about. Wichita State, St Mary's, Creighton and Murray State had great years but when the lights were the brighest it was Ohio that stole the spotlight. Even poor Xavier and Cincinnati were overshadowed by Ohio. We drew UNC in the sweetsixteen and took them to overtime. Everybody was glued to the Ohio game. Noone was watching X and Baylor that nite. Our game was far more exciting because the Bobcats had everybody wonding if they could really to it. They almost did. The pubilicity was great.
