7. Anger again when he wanted to "get the current kids out on the floor to workout for him." - Yeah, I'm sure that's what all our players want to be doing right now, after an emotionally draining Sweet 16 run and 37 game season. Interviewing for their own jobs, like it's a Management Consulting firm coming in and making recommendations to the Board of Directors. "Walt, I'd like to see you spot up for a few 3-pointers." - "Hey Coop, let me see you make some passes to Reggie in the post." - Um, no. Here's what I'd say - "Coach, if you want to see how I operate, there's plenty of film from the 37 games we just played over the past 5 months.  No thanks. Just being honest, if you did your homework on this team, you know what you have in each player. This is the time to get to know personalities, watch film, and think about the future. Not put everyone on the floor for workouts with you.

My feelings towards this subject are quite different. As much as it would suck, as a player, to go back out onto the court for a quick shoot-around after the extra-long season, I would make the argument that you don't really know a player's personality until you see him in person on the court, and especially as a coach. He wants to "test the waters" to see how they team and him function together as a unit, and I can't fault the man for that.

Yeah, I agree. The LOVE must have not been listening - he actually did say, that you don't really know a player's personality until they are out on the court.

It actually made me feel relieved that his focus will be on getting to know this special group of players that took OHIO to the Sweet 16.

Throughout the entire presser, he reiterated that he won't be changing much ... he definitely gave the impression that he is going to lean on this group, especially this first year.

At no time, would I have thought anyone could have assumed that he meant that the players were going to be interviewing for their jobs.

Plus, he is the head coach - not like consulting firm at all. He gets to say who plays and who doesn't - and there is no way he is looking to decide that in April.

The NCAA permits 2 hours weekly contact with each individual running up to final exams and then again during the 8 weeks of summer while classes are in session. Many coaches break this down to 40 minute coached sessions for individual workouts and expect the kids to do much more than that by themselves following the same format coached in the individual sessions.

I would expect JC to want to get in the gym with the kids to get a feel for their individual strengths and weakness based on first hand observation and participation in those workouts.. and like any good educator ...learn how they learn and what and how they respond.  Really good coaches with great asst coaches use these to mold their players work habits and find the areas of the game each individual really needs to make better. I suspect JC will be getting in there on his own and doing face to face workouts getting to know the kids.

They are all playing at Ping anyway almost every day....not like you can keep these guys off the court. Unfortuantely in many programs the worst habits are the ones they develope while running open gyms. It takes strong leadership and trust between teamies to continue to work on what the program needs ragther than just rolling out the nballs and running up and down.

Love.

Good evaluation. glad you went through the range of emotions and came to terms before posting. Great points and really solid analysis.

I don't think I described my views very well on this particular point. I'll own it and step back a little. I know each of these guys love basketball and respects the game. They tweet about Ping incessantly, and I'm sure they're up there all...the...time. Totally agree with Borna, you're not going to keep these guys out of the gym. My point was more to JC's comment that he needs to get them in the gym and work them out, because that's the best way to get to know each player. In this situation, I just disagree.

By this situation, I mean 37 games.... draining MAC and NCAA Tournaments....2 extra weeks of practice....trying to catch up on schoolwork and social activities...insane media scrutiny....lost their entire coaching staff....and had to come to terms with a completely new Head Coach. I have no problem saying it - give these guys a break for a few weeks.

I'm not saying they didn't enjoy it, I'm just saying, give them some space right now. Do some things off the court to learn how this team functions as a unit, and how the individual personalities can best be motivated. The Management Consultant analogy was a bad one, I apologize. However, I just have to believe you aren't going to see what you need to see 2 weeks after this crazy season came to an end. It's all going to be window dressing until Summer anyways.

I must admit that I went through many of the same emotional turns and twists as described by BL.  After the presser and the media interview yesterday, though, I became a believer.  I think he's the right guy for the job, and that Jim S. has done another excellent job of finding the right man for the job.  Both Jims seem really committed to taking us to the next level.  It's an institutional level of commitment (starting at the very top) that I haven't seen since the days of Vern the Fern.  They are having a local "meet and greet" on Friday from 6 to7 at Walter Hall.  I plan to be there to get a little first-hand observation.  GO OHIO!

I wanted so badly to email Schaus and give my input on the search. "Jim, if you stay inside the program do this. Jim, if you look outside, here's a list of names." - But, I held off. I held off b/c I trust Schaus's track record in these situations.

Seeing as it is his job and your hobby, I think that was wise.  You want to have some level of credibility when you talk to him in casual settings.

"Listen, Jim -- can I call you Jim--?"

"No."

LOVE

Just a follow up and I understand the need for downtime but with limited contact time it is of importance to hit the ground running. Reading Groces quotes from a Klee article I found the following interesting as it is what he did the moment he got to Athens.  The success down the road depends on recruiting the next couple of classes. We are at an advantage at OHIO in that we have an intact team but does Christian know the work ethic and personality of each...this is his only opportunity to assess and evaluate. Most coaches do that in the gym and not with film. . Looks like Ramon Wiliams will be joining him in Champaign too.

You've talked about possibly needing to adapt to fit the personnel — maybe not play as fast as you want to play. How much will you need to adjust in your first season?

You know, I don't know yet. We're going to see. The biggest change since we spoke at the press conference is Meyers (Leonard) going pro. That's going to change some things, in terms of our depth with our size in the frontcourt. So we're going to have to adapt there. But I'm still kind of in information-gathering mode, to be honest with you. We've had (three) skill workouts. I've watched them lift weights.

I haven't had a chance to watch any film on this team. And I haven't decided yet if that's something I'm going to do. I don't know if I want to develop any presuppositions or develop any predetermined ideas. I almost want to go into this with a fresh mind, clean slate. I think in a couple weeks I'll have a better feel for what we have, what kind of skill we have, what kind of players we have. I'll have a better idea what guys can do.

Interesting that Groce took Illini with not much regard for what they have now.  So, apparently took it pretty much for what it can be.

Not criticizing in any way.  Just thought that current talent would have been more of a concern.

I dunno if they listen but 1800 plus reads surely means they stop and look......that alone will help you not get run over by a train.....
